anyone notice that the lid is like twice as big as the bottom??

So, are we expecting to hear/see something on the 14th? Or maybe a weekd or two after that?

Also, do we think Apple will really release a new MBP during the Back 2 School promotion?

Thoughts?

Apple runs the back to school promo in different countries, at different points in the year. Again, as I pointed out before, when the Free iPod scheme hit the UK it was after new iPods had been released. They don't dictate their product release schedule around this promo as much as you'd like to think - also it's not as if all their customers are in education; delaying products otherwise ready to go because of one promo makes no business sense.

I hope you're right!

It's about 5% faster than the freaking current card.. -----_______-----

3dmark06 benchmarks:
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT: 4500
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT: 3347
% Increase: ~35%

If the 55nm shrink also keeps the card cooler, I think it'd be fine.

Those score are for the 8600m gt ddr 2 version. The ddr3 version gets around 4k.

Bingo. Sadly the 9600M GT would be a mundane upgrade, particularly for the 17".

If Apple wants to give us a real boost in performance it'll have to allow an *8** card into it's 17"er at the very least.

does this necessarily show a Macbook Pro? how come this couldn't be an Aluminum Macbook in the photo? thats also been thrown around these days...

Given the size of the :apple: did not change, you can use it as a scale. I did a quick overlay via photoshop with the current mb 13,3" and the mbp 15" and 17". The only one that matched the :apple: sign and the overall size of the case in the picture was the mbp 15".

I don't think so

Also, do we think Apple will really release a new MBP during the Back 2 School promotion?

My thoughts: No.

Apple will not introduce new product during the "buy an imac get an ipod" promotion. The whole point is to move out the old. Even when they applied promotions and changed iPods in the middle of it, they only applied a credit towords the new iPod; the "free" contribution didn't match the price.

Believe me, no one is more anxious for the new PBP than me! I've been waiting since the last disappointing "bump"!

My quess is after the promotion - sometime in the late 3rd quarter.

When they did the iPod update that pushed out the 2nd gen nano, there was a disclaimer at the bottom of the promotion eligibility page that completely exempted all new iPods from the promotion.

Apple's released computers during the promotion before, as well.

It has been said over and over, more or less every year Apple releases new MBPs before the end of the back to school deal..

Collective amnesia on MR?

It's just ignorance, no big deal. I didn't think they'd release it either until I heard the stories like this.

Actually, the SR MBP were launched last year a couple of days after the Back 2 School Promotion started. So, it is possible that the new MBP will come out very soon.

Anyone in the market for an MBP is gonna be waiting for Montevina, only the MacBooks can be selling that well right now, even with the deal.

I'm going to buy a MBP as early as September but as late as November. Hopefully, they put their completely revised lineup into production by then

i think the august/september timeframe is about spot on.

the macbook PRO isn't something they would try to center around a holiday release, and with the whole nvidia fiasco going on they have to do something quick.

even then, you'll get people saying wait until macworld.

The nVidia mess pretty much means Apple have to release new MacBook Pros as soon as physically possible. If every one of those chips is fubard they have to get a new chip is asap.

Released dates

If you want to check the release dates on 'portable' Macs, just go to the buyer guide in the forum... shows all the release dates. Spread mostly through the year and some through summer.... mostly smaller updates tho'. I'm pretty bored with my older PB G4 17 laptop so I brought a 2.8 Ghz iMac to help ease the pain waiting for something a little different. Sure, any of the new machines will be great, I just want a change with the next MBP design.... I've been using this PB since it was first released in 2003 ~ April. Works fine... just too slow (now) for video development and the 10000 odd 15-20 Mb images on file. I... will.....just.... be..... patient....

No one's saying it's not a problem, but 100% of the chips are not defective. Duh.

I just ordered my new Pro today because its a tax free weekend and I got the free iPod with educational discount so I saved an extra $460 essentially. If Apple has new updates in the next two weeks, then hopefully I'll be able to get that instead of the current gen (mine will arrive in apx. two weeks).

If its going to be until November or so, which is possible then I'll be glad I had it for this much of the summer and didn't have to pay over $100 in taxes.
