So, what likelihood are we giving that Apple will actually satisfy our deepest longings and swap out NVidia for ATI? 10%? If so, then we can logically tie the introduction of an ATI solution to the likelihood of a Republican being in the White House in 2009. I'm just sayin'...

PowerBook G4s and MacBook Pros have had ATI graphics (except for the 12" PowerBook G4 and the last two MacBook Pro revisions). They could switch to ATI for this revision.

They could go the same way as the iMacs did last year and introduce a HD 3470 in the low-end, and HD 3650 in the mid- and high-ends.

People wanting a better GPU in the MacBook Pros will probably be disappointed. The latest GPU series from NVIDIA (9000) and ATI (HD 3000) are similar to the previous series (8000 and HD 2000), except for slightly higher clocks and/or slightly lower TDP. There really aren't any other changes that matter. For that reason, Apple might continue with the 8600M GT in the next revision, much like how they kept the HD 2600 in the April 2008 iMac update, until the next significant update.

I did not know that (said in the voice of Johnny Carson). This is the sound of me bowing to my sensei. You have effectively carbonated my spinal fluid, and now I am all a tingle with expectant hopes that Tuesday, August 5th will bring a Monte with ATI. I'll up it to 40% chance. Same odds as there being unbiased judging in the olympic boxing. Probably not, but it would be nice...

Steve Jobs, I know you're reading this. Put down your guava/kiwi Jamba Juice and make it so! I have spoken.

I'm notsure why I'm even waiting right now. It's not like Montevina is going to be any faster. The only hope is a faster GPU, and it's likely to be a 9600, which isn't any faster either!

Maybe a higher-res screen, but most importantly, a screen that doesn't have the yellow and/or banding problems!

Ya know, speaking of waiting (cuz, ya know, true love waits...), anyone know what Apple's policy would be if someone were to buy an existing MBP, say today, & then next week (fingers crossed) the new models are released... Would they allow a swap-out for a nominal upgrade fee (i.e., difference in price)? I know they did this with the iPhones earlier this month, but this may be different. Thoughts? Thanks!

August 5th :apple: can't get here any sooner!!

Lowering your expectations so that the 9600M won't completely depress you aye?

Hmm...I guess as long as they bust out a defect-less GPU however marginally better than the 8600M GT I'll be happy... As long as it runs CS 1.6 (yep, still scrimming dust2), WC3, Starcraft 2, and perhaps Call of Duty 4 fine, I'll be satisfied. Probably better this way...discouraging me from playing games in college and devote more time working. Simply put, at this point, I just want something that'll last! Grrrr...

I suppose you could put it that way. ;):p

I wonder what our responses will be if Apple did keep the 8600M GT (or moved to a low-end GPU in the low-end model).

My God that's hideous. I hope someone shoots whomever thought up the chiclet keyboard. Unlike most people I want shot (whoever it was that thought up school, or algebra, or chemistry), this person is probably still alive. I want to see some action.

Honestly, introducing that keyboard is the number one quickest way to take the "Pro" out of "MacBook Pro."

How tacky can you get?

Lol, the worst part is, "all new" is a joke.... Montevina is another tiny update... we might get at best an nVidia 9600 GT, based directly on the 8600.... and we'll get a crappy keyboard based on the MBA.

Apple does this a lot, actually... "the all-new Power Macintosh G4.."

Yeah, except the only difference between the G4 and the B&W G3 was the color of the case, an AGP slot, the MPX bus (born out of necessity due to an issue with the PPC7400 and Grackle), and the G4 CPU, which was just a G3 with a 604e FPU ;x

I think I would be mollified with a higher-res screen, though, I suppose. As long as I could find a way to cover up that hideous keyboard from the public.

Yeah, that and as mentioned, the crappy screen quality as it stands right now.. PowerBooks never had that problem did they?

So the only reason you would not buy a MacBook Pro is because of the keyboard. What if it has new features that you have been waiting for for years, I think you would purchase it no matter what.

Not necessarily. If I hate the look and feel of a keyboard (which I do, in this case), that can be a real dealbreaker for me.

Dell offers an identical notebook to Apple's, save the case, of course... same MoBo, same graphics etc, lower price.

I could just get that and install OS X on it. Granted, I don't like Dell, but if Apple's gonna do stupid [things] like that, then [forget] 'em.

I'm used to using the Apple II Extended M3501 keyboard, which was in my opinion, and many others', the best keyboard Apple ever made.... given it cost $100 is 1989, it's no real surprise. I've been using a half-decent keyboard on my PC laptop for three years, and I'm used to it being reasonably usable (though I can type over 100 WPM on the Apple II keyboard, I can probably get less than 50 WPM on the keyboard on my sister's MacBook 2.4). Probably even less on this clearly membrane-based PC keyboard on the desktop PC I'm typing on right now.. =x

I guess I'm not as "metro" as I used to be...I'll leave that to Derek Jeter & A-Rod. I don't care nearly as much about the chiklet keyboard or what the thing looks like as I do about the FIXED GPU (c'mon, c'mon ATI...). And, again, need I call attention to the obvious: The above picture (while official-looking because of the pretty leopard screen) is a MOCK-UP. That's right, at this point it's as legit as MS Vista. For all we know, Jobs may have cut a deal with Commodore and this new Monte may look like an Amiga (you go, 1984!). That said, if it looks like an old Compaq luggable, I'll pass.

Yea, I really hope it doesn't go to chicklet keyboard, it doesn't look professional in my mind, the silver keys with the laser cut outs for the lights leaving a dark gray to black look for the thin letters looks amazing, if apple does go chicklet, it better be silver, or better yet, have a no cost BTO with these options atleast for US like this

Silver Macbook Pro Backlit Keyboard (English) / User's Guide
Silver Macbook Pro Backlit Keyboard (Western Spanish) / User's Guide
Black Macbook Air Backlit Keyboard (English) / User's Guide
Black Macbook Air Backlit Keyboard (Western Spanish) / User's Guide

And for in store purchases on the side of the box, the picture with the open macbook pro could have the appropriate keyboard style representative of the keyboard which is on the mac in the box.

Chicklet just doesn't look highly professional, and I dont think I would like the gaps in the keys, the current keyboards lettering and colors just look amazing.

Let's have some simple spec estimations then; processor, HDD, RAM, optical drive, GPU etc. for each model.

Here are the things I feel are what we need to worry about the most:

1. All the new MacBook Pros being sold out before we can get one. I cant wait for weeks just to get a computer. Just look at the iPhone 3G, it was sold out on the first day and people are even paying over $1000 on eBay just to get one now. It is SICKNESS!

2. Apple putting in under-par parts like the: cheap looking chiclet keys, a mediocre graphics card, or wussing out on the clock speeds they choose for the processor etc. etc. I hope they support Wi-Max...

3. Apple either does't release until september or they put out the new MBPs with santa rosa for a while.

And bingo was his name-o. SPOT on. Except since those are the HDDs right now, I'd say 250, 320, and 320 with the 500 and a faster something else as BTO.

lets see

I ordered a black 16gb version on the 18th.. I overhead the rep on the phone say they were getting shipments in within 3-5 days but looks like not this week.

I don't think Apple would **** out the 15.4's with only a low resolution option or a worse cpu clock speed than the 17's. there will also probably be at least 7200 rpm hdd's and an option for ssd. they usually keep the specs relitivly similar other than the actual size of the laptop's screen. Personally i think a lot of people don't want the big 17 inch laptop, because well frankly it is a "lap-top"
