Am I missing something here as to why every macbook pro user wants DDR3 RAM?
Or is the general mac user just not educated about hardware?
DDR3 as main system memory
(I AM NOT SAYING THIS ABOUT GRAPHICS MEMORY, DDR3 *IS* GOOD FOR THAT)
is a huge waste of money, and is not something you should want.
There are two main reasons DDR3 system memory is bad. One is the price, which I will split into two parts.
1. You need a motherboard which supports DDR3, which are exponentially higher than a DDR2 motherboard
3. The cost of DDR3 RAM is insane.
Your top selling nvidia chipset motherboard, mid-range, with SLI (among other features) and DDR2 ram is 149.99 (
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131232)
Now, a comparable SLI motherboard, from the same manufacturer, using the same nvidia SLI chipset, using DDR3 is...
374.99
(
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131293)
Now sure, you can find DDR3 motherboards for cheaper, but they seriously skimp on the other features. Basically, the low end DDR3 boards cost the same as the high end DDR2 boards.
374.99 was on the cheaper side of what I could find for a GOOD DDR3 board (with support for SLI, etc, etc.
Now the price of DDR3 RAM itself.... since I can't find any DDR3 laptop memory, I will use desktop just to illustrate how bad you are being ripped off.
4GB of DDR2 800 ram (
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227280) 87.99
4GB of DDR3 from the SAME manufacturer: 199.99 (
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227288)
Now imagine that with Apple ram pricing!
Now you're probably wondering, so what if it is more expensive if there is a performance increase? Well here is the problem.
DDR3 has an 8 bit prefetch buffer. DDR2 has 4 bit. So the bandwith is twice as good, technically.
But the latency of DDR3 is much worse than DDR2. Standard DDR2 (of course, I can get better than standard, which I have in my macbook)
is 5-5-5-15
DDR3 is 7-7-7-15
Due to the increased cas latency, you don't actually get twice as much performance as the increased bandwith would lead you to believe.
In short: DDR3 is a waste of money, for not a large, if any, performance gain.
