A new rumor has it that NVIDIA is preparing to bow out of the chipset business altogether, making it unlikely that Apple has forged a closer bond with the chipmaker as part of its future Mac product plans

Well well well, what do we have here?

It seems more likely then that Apple is going to have itself or PA Semi or whatever to design a chipset. Or maybe they're just sticking with Montevina.

Either way, signs still point to an upcoming MacBook Pro and MacBook redesign this year (not next year).

Here's to Calpella... ;)
Montevina won't exactly be awe inspiring. Calpella & Nehalem sure will be.
From what I know, Calpella helps with performance, and Montevina helps with the other stuff.

...an indicator for pre-holiday NEW Macs?

AppleInsider claims that Apple resellers have received notice that MacBook, MacBook Pro and iPod supplies will become constrained in the coming weeks. Apple expects to decrease production of these models and, as a result, Apple is recommending that resellers stock up on supplies now to last them through August.

If true, this is interesting as it indicates that new MacBooks and MacBook Pro's may be in stock as early as Sept. surely for the holiday shopping season... we'll see.

My hope is, that issues like those when the new Intel Mac's were launched, bad screens, battery problems, heat issues, etc. etc. are a thingy of history, and TQM
prevails.

What do you 'good people' think?

It seems odd that a significant number of people on the forum get up in arms about the fact that macrumors posted a rumor on the frontpage. Like when there was a rumor recently that Apple might not use Intel Chips, there were 100390384 threads about what chips Apple was going to use instead because they definiately weren't using Intel anymore. It's just a rumor! I'm new and I know that. dr. phil.

HAHAHA, that's why it is called a rumor...

The name of this FORUM is MacRumors, so let's speculate a bit, and then Stevee shall surprise us yet again:)

i always look at these forums with a sense of humor. being dead serious only frustrates;)

Or that this rumor is completely false, which I think is highly probable.
... which means Apple will use Montevina, like I said.

Article got updated.
AppleInsider said:
Update: Lehman analyst Tim Luke has contacted Nvidia management in both the U.S. and Taiwan and found that the company remains committed to staying in the chipset business, despite DigiTimes' claims.

According to Barrons, Luke issued a report noting that Nvidia is expected to ramp chipsets with Intel motherboard partners such as Hewlett-Packard and Dell, with incremental opportunities at Apple, and others.

Definitely sucks that it's not coming out till September. Guess I'm gonna be borrowing my dad's Dell laptop for school until they come out and I can get a MBP.... my old laptop finally died and is now in pieces =x

Really though, what are the odds of a 9650 GS? It seems unlikely at 29W... 45% more power than the 8600 GT.

Plus, why's everyone bashing the 9600 GT? I realize its core is incrementally faster, but it's got memory clocked 14.4% higher, and shader speeds are improved... 1.25 GHz up from I think 950 MHz, so I imagine it would perform reasonably well (relatively) compared to the 8600 in newer shader-based games.

In fact... in 3DMark 05, the 9600 GT is a bigger leap by far over the 8600 GT than the 9650 GS is over the 9600 GT.

Maybe we're talking about different rumors; I'm saying the rumor that nVidia is getting out of the chipset business is highly improbable. In that case, Apple may still be planning to go to nVidia, not Montevina.
My mistake then.

do you think they will change the names of their line up? like they did with powerbook?

Hmm...powerbook eh. Maybe SuperBook? UberBook? BigBook? Maybe Steve's gonna go into retirement and wants something to be remembered by so he'll change it to "Steve's Book"...I'm sure all the zealots will love it. The Steve's Book Pro.

Ok, so the consensus now is early September, right? Or am I wrong?
The month of September is a safe guess, as there have been reports of early, mid, and late September. And I would say the consensus is about early September.
