just except the fact that they aren't coming till sept. If you're thinking of getting a new MBP and you NEED it. Go for it. I made the jump and have no regrets. I'm so glad to stop obsessing each day and just finally have the thing. And its awesome! It really is.
I wish I could feel that way - I could never live with myself if I knew I was laying out nearly $3000 for a machine that was about to become one generation old. If it was like a hundred dollar thing that would be different, but this is a MAJOR purchase, the only things bigger than this are a car or a house!
I'd be fine if I was getting some kind of above average deal or something, but when even small improvements in speed are going to show a difference in the work you do it's 100% worth waiting. my hope is that if they still aren't out by Sept 15th I can just tell my school that the old ones are sold out and I now have to wait for the new ones

And I don't think mobile Nehalem will have improvements as big because mobile Nehalem still has 2-channel RAM (as opposed to 3-channel) and no QuickPath (uses DMI).
im thinking about buying the current MBP today and using it until montevina comes out. then I will sell it on ebay. since I get the educational discount, do you think I will come close to breaking even when I sell it on ebay in a few weeks? Will there be dozens of other people doing the same thing as me?
You will not get anywhere near what you payed for...
no one wants to buy a current gen mbp after the NVIDIA issues...

Has there been any significant history of releasing products on the exact day of updates?
I think that I have given up waiting.
Right now I can get the iPod, Printer, and $50 worth of accessories for free with the computer, that is basically an extra $450 savings that I won't get on the new one if it comes out in September.
Plus I sold my old PC notebook to my coworker and I do not think he would wait that long for it.
I am also a switcher and I need some time to get used to the new OS before school starts.
So I think I will be buying a new 2.4 Macbook Pro this weekend or early next week.
Anyone think that I am stupid for this decision?

I feel your pain, though the only one that I think is "stupid" is Apple for not doing any real design upgrades to their top-of-line notebook for 5 years. Which other company can afford this? 7 years if you don't see the transition from titanium to aluminum as a major upgrade. They can do this only because the competition is so weak. If there was just a little bit of real competition out there, Apple would be done in a day.

No, because it seems to be the right call for your situation, if you're happy with the machine you're buying then there's no reason to wait, you can always look at selling the 2.4 if you decide you must have the montevina version later.
Personally I know I'd be pissed off at myself if I didn't wait, and that that's the best decision for me - I think this all comes down to knowing which call is going to make YOU the happiest and nobody can say that but you...
I wouldn't say stupid, I would say unwise. Unless money is not an issue and in that case its absolutely fine. I was brought up to value money in every aspect so to invest in something that is to be updated within next few weeks is just a waste for me. It's your call but I would wait. You are a student and as a student you have the luxury to wait for the update.

Not all students can wait. I'm required to have mine before school starts on Sept 8. I'm hoping if the new ones aren't out then stocks are also gone so I can tell them that they're sold out and I HAVE to wait.
