IMO, the masses are not ready to pay for their daily news. I think they're fighting a long, uphill battle here. They should give it away for at least the first week. Try and get people hooked.

So newspapers have had it wrong these last 200+ years and they should have been giving their news away for free all this time.

Television news hooked you into having to watch advertisements every few minutes--you couldn't just skip the ad and keep watching. Even with TIVO, how many people skip commercials during the show?

Internet news let you skip the ads, but some managed to shove the ad in front of the article, so it was still ad-supported. Other sites would throw the headline and/or teaser, then require you to either register to read the article or pay, one way or another, for the opportunity to read the rest.

Honestly, paying for the news--if it includes the ability to bypass any advertising--at such a low rate is pretty good. Most city newspapers charged $35/month to deliver it to your door. I think a dollar a week is pretty darn good. That takes us back to the pricing of hard copy a century ago.

I'm with you there. I don't think The Daily is going to be my cup of tea, long-range. I'd like to see some offerings for paid content from more traditional (hell, more legitimate) news operations.

I'm looking forward to seeing the NYT's iPad app.

I'm a little confused on their stance that some of this interactivity wouldn't make sense or is impossible on the web but isn't that what we're pushing for with HTML5?

"It will be available in about 10 minutes at the apple store"

Apple Store? Seriously?... these people are clueless.

I like it. I'd pay for it if it beats my skepticism and doesn't turn out to be a Fox News clone. If they remain centrist and unbiased, I can afford 99¢ for an iPad purpose built news app.

That said, other plays will most likely come forward with their own, at which point we can choose our favourite.

So... I'll wait and see.

When I watched these four people do the demo and then especially during the interviews, I had a strong feeling that I did NOT want to support these people. They slid around answering some questions, especially the man on the right right. He seemed quite rude Did not care for him at all.

No thank you.

This event is so boring for me. After ten seconds I knew that The Daily isn't for me. Murdoch said it is going to be a national publication...Why not make international versions?

International versions? Be careful what you wish for. The rest of the world will be better off if they keep that propaganda machine locked away behind US borders where it belongs.

Jut got the daily- it stutters and lags just like in the keynote.

Hopefully v1.01 will fix this

LOL @ the anti-Fox News rage. What's the matter, don't you guys get enough left-wing bias from CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, NYT, Newsweek, Time, and on and on that you have to gripe about the sole right-wing outlet? :p

Here's what I do: I watch the news, recognize and filter the bias (right or left) inherent in all reporting, and make my own decisions based on the facts and my own values, apart and separate from the philosophies and world views pushed on me by human reporters with human biases.

It's what mature, intelligent people do.

We do not know that for sure. I am just saying that there should be more news apps like that, that do take advantage of the iPad.

14 cents per day, $0.99/ week is officially the price. Fair if it is good. Heck, I spend $2.00 a day for a coffee.

if you consider the price of K-cups, I pay a buck-twenty-five a day for coffee. At least it never tastes burnt.

A good concept, I believe, but I'm not sure I'll like the content from this particular publisher.

And as ever at the end of the vid Flash does its magic and.....
:eek::mad::D

Some things never change. :p
