Does anyone know if you can do FaceTime over the cell network instead of WiFi with the Verizon iPhone?

Not to pick on you specifically, but why are so many users here calendar-challenged? The current iPhone came out less than 7 months ago. Not a year. Also, new iPhones come out late June/early July. That's about half a year from now. Selling someone the best phone available now, and then releasing a new model in half a year is not even close to an unreasonable thing for either party to do.

If for some reason you feel ripped off every time a new phone comes out, I would suggest never looking at the Android phone release schedule.

Guys, I seriously doubt Apple will release iPhone 5 for Verizon until about a year from now. It makes perfect business sense to keep the upgrade cycle for this phone at 1 year, just like the GSM one. Remember, this CDMA model is going to be a "minor player" for Apple. No matter how many people have been wanting it, it's never going to outsell the GSM model. Plus... Apple can't even handle the GSM iPhone launch in June/July as it is...think about how fast they run out of supply and go to a 4 week backorder. It'd be pure chaos trying to introduce a GSM and CDMA model at the same time. And the reason they run out of GSM units is because they sell them faster than the manufacturer (FoxConn) can make them. If they can't make just the GSM model fast enough, how on earth could they make both at the same time for adequate supply for a new launch? The staggered 6 month launch for CDMA and GSM gives them adequate time to prepare for each launch. Plus...Apple likes high quarterly earnings...a constant January/February Verizon launch gives them a very large Q1/Q2 revenue generator each year. When GSM sales start to slow because people know a new phone typically comes out in the summer.

I'm not sure what you mean. Verizon already has tens of millions of customers that make that trade-off now. I'm sure they'd be happy to have the iPhone.

I am aware that people will do it regardless. Even if they gave them an iPhone "4" that has no accelerometer or gyros or "bluetooth".. these same people will still take that iphone, it's just not really an iphone without you being able to make a call and use data at the same time. He's right in saying people put priorities differently, as concurrent data and voice is one on the top of my list. But I previously used to think that a phone without fully featured bluetooth is simply not a smartphone, look at the iPhone only 2 bluetooth profiles out of the many it's capable of doing, yet I have one. So even priorities change.

All in all, personally i'd hope iPhone 5 will use LTE and their network will be capable of simultaneous voice and data otherwise i'll stick to AT&T. For the rest of the people, they can do whatever they want i guess. My previous comment probably was just a knee-jerk reaction to the news that superimposed itself onto my "not-so-generalized-now" opinion.

Most people don't use voice and data at the same time on their phones. So, the lack of this ability is a moot point for most.

I wouldn't say this is exactly true. I see people on phones checking for directions, looking things up, texting other people, all the time now. A few years ago I would agree with you, but not so much anymore.

the answer to this question is very easy - how do they do it in other countries when they add a new carrier. they give them the current phone then in june they give them the new one. this will work the same way.

And there's the deal breaker for me. Nothing more awesome than being on the phone with someone and being able to look up restaurants on Yelp or looking at Maps while talking to someone, at least here in NYC.

That would also be a dealbreaker for me, if I ever actually received voice calls -- 30-40% of the time, I have a WiFi connection and an inviting "NO SERVICE" on the top of my iPhone (it's more like 90% of the time when I'm in my house -- despite "good" coverage and an antenna less than two miles away).

Verizon has once again crippled a device.

Why would I pay more (given good coverage where I am at) for:

-No Concurrent Data/Voice (Verizon users....trust me...this is like power windows in a car...once you have it, you wonder how you lived without it)

-No Free Wifi

-No international coverage (this also results in less demand for selling your used iPhone)

-No Rollover Minutes

-Visual Voicemail will not update while you are on another call

Unless Verizon has monthly plans at half the price, forget it.

- Again, concurrent data & voice would matter, if I ever actually had voice coverage (or data coverage).

- I've used AT&T wifi hotspots a grand total of two times since July 2007.

- Very few users will unlock their phone for international SIMs and probably fewer will pay AT&T's outrageous international voice/data roaming rates.

- I've got tons and tons of rollover minutes. I'd prefer to actually have the ability to use my iPhone as a phone.

- AT&T has this lovely habit of sending my visual voicemails 2-3 hours after the caller left them. (And texts can come in days after they've been sent.) Personally, I'd love to get them right after I get off an actual phone call -- it'd be a huge improvement.

I would wait if I were you. Wait till March and see the posts on this forum. Grass on the otherside is always green they say but right now it is starting to look brown already and we are not even on the other side yet. Was thinking of getting the Verizon iPhone for my gf since she is already on Verizon and her contract is up for renewal. But now I am thinking she is better off switching to AT&T. Will wait a couple of months and see what happens here.

Nooooo...!!!!

Go to verizon, please!

I've been waiting for this day to (1) not hear people complain about att, and (2) not hear folks wanting to have a better att connection in some markets (I personally have never had any issues)

More like crapping their pants and looking for a tall building

Its just the same phone that was released last year... It's just now avail on Verizon. I am quite sure they were aware of this and IMO this is old phone slightly behind on the times compared to the new droids coming out. Yes there will be a huge number of people buying them but maybe not. The people I know with droids are very happy with them and few have ever shown any interest in my iPhone. So hype will carry some of this but from my limited experience droid is a serious competitor. I am looking forward to as many people switching off ATT as possible though. That just means ATT is going to give out better deals and I will get faster data due to less congestion.

That's a very good theory. Oh how I wish I had stock in Apple right now. Very smart of them.

It's amusing how people generalize to support an argument, or comment. I use this feature daily, as do a number of other people I know who own iPhones.

I could easily say something to support my argument; "I had Verizon, and it was horrible. No coverage in my area, so I ASSUME it's that way every where, so don't buy a Verizon phone"...

My experience has been the opposite. A lot of people I know with Android phones do like them a lot but they've all stated that they would buy an iPhone if it was on Verizon.

Apparently the new CDMA phone has relocated buttons that will probably require new cases. Great.

WOW??? dont post stuff you dont know about.
I also use this this alot, so does everyone else I know that has the iphone.

This is good news.
1) Those on Verizon using Droids or whatever aren't getting simultaneous voice and data now, so nothing changes for them.
2) AT&T network may free up a bit, allowing voice and data better room to breathe (read: better quality due to less strain)
3) I own a small handful of AAPL. :D

I'm slightly surprised White iPhone 4 was M.I.A. yet again.

I'm not, as I don't expect competency from Apple Consumer Electronic anymore. They even have a hard time getting a clock to work right, somehow getting a white iPhone out the door is just about impossible.

I think people do this more than they might think. As posted above, directions, maybe looking up movietimes, searching for something on the web, etc.

When I 1st read that the Verizon iPhone would allow you to use it as a wifi hotspot for 5 devices, I thought game changer. Or at least it would force AT&T to do the same. But then when I read about the lack of simultaneous voice or data, the allure went out the window. So great, you can be surfing on your ipad, computer etc and all of your calls go to voicemail. But you never know if you get voicemail since the visual voicemail is data.

My thought is that AT&T gets a six month exclusive of every iPhone, so the iPhone 5 will come in June 2011 for AT&T customers but February 2012 for Verizon customers.
