Placed an order for a M1 MBP 16G/1TB (with Express Delivery) on 19 Dec with an estimated delivery date of 21-27 Jan. I live on the US west coast.

On 19 Jan, I received notification that it had shipped from Shanghai. Apple has said that it will arrive on 27 Jan (so much for "Express" delivery). UPS initially said 25 Jan. Then the delivery date became "unknown" and "we'll tell you tomorrow". Then it became 25 Jan again. A little more than 24 hours after it was tracked as leaving Shanghai it arrived in Osaka. Now the delivery date is "delayed" and "we'll tell you tomorrow" again.

I order lots of car parts from the UK and even during the pandemic the ship time for express shipping has almost always been 3 days (even a full exhaust system).

They can sometimes get stuck waiting for customs clearance. In any country they travel through.

That doesn't explain why the estimated ship time is over a week. As I said, I have a lot of experience with express shipping. Over a week for "express" shipping as the base ship time is not normal.

That seems to be pretty standard for Apple according to this thread.
Your package could visit 3 countries (or more) and customs clearance is needed in all of them.

I'm on the east coast. I received my shipping notification on 1/16. It cleared Chinese customs the same day. Then it landed in Hong Kong on the 18th. Left HK and landed in Alaska on the 19th. Left Alaska the same day and arrived in Kentucky today, the 20th. The tracking states I'll receive it Friday, the 22nd. That's 6 days in transit, with two weekend days included.

I did NOT pay for express. I'm sure Apple will refund the additional shipping charges you paid if you complain about it.

Japan, especially on Honshu, has been in the midst of extreme weather systems for the past few days. Very few aircraft will be taking off, if any at all until it has cleared. You may have seen the article in world news about the 134 vehicle pile up in northern Honshu due to severely reduced visibility courtesy of snow storms for example.

And expedited delivery won't refund for late delivery due to severe weather, under similar clauses to "acts of god".

Place an order for M1 MBA 8G/512GB on 16Jan. With estimated delivery by 09Feb. After reading through the thread I‘m not going to hold my breath for a delivery by 09Feb.

Most people seem to be getting their orders within the estimated timeframe.

Ordered a 7/16/256 on Dec. 28th. I never saw any store sell that model. Shipping timeframe is January 28-February 4. My card was charged and it was changed to Preparing to Ship today. Looks like it's probably going to be here before February 4th, which is nice.

It seems like Apple had a big order pushed through, and we are starting to get our online orders. I think the BTO ones will continue to be a long wait.

According to UPS, mine is set to deliver tomorrow, Friday the 22nd. As of 1:21AM today, the 20th, it's in Alaska.

Base config in space grey, ordered January 1. Apple website says it should be coming between January 21 and 28. Based on today being the 19th and Apple still reporting "processing," I'm guessing it will be closer to the 28th…if not later.
Just got word today: the MacBook has shipped, and should be arriving Tuesday. Yay!

Mine came today as well. Ordered Dec. 22nd. I had to return it because it had a huge chip in the aluminum case. Second return. My first order had uneven keyboard backlighting, and the esc key was much dimmer than the rest of the keyboard. It was a month long wait for each computer, so now I’m two months in, and still don’t have one. I doubt I’ll reorder and wait another month for more disappointment. I mind as well wait for the next update at this point.

The quality control with Apple these days is absurd. Especially, on BTO product you have to wait a month to play the lottery on.

I hear ya. Returned an Air last week because it wobbled like crazy. One of the feet didn't even make contact with surfaces! Drove me crazy.

I suspect margins on iPhone and iPad are significantly higher compared to MacBook and allow for direct shipping.

Not sure I follow. Assuming shipments are via air, going to a distribution center just increases cost. Shipping directly to the consumer would always be cheaper, right?

Apple can use any air freight company (e.g. Cathay Pacific) to transport a pallet of MacBooks from Shanghai to the U.S. They can even use ocean. Once it reaches the U.S., Apple can choose cheaper regional transportation partners to move pallets. UPS is great with domestic distribution, but they don’t offer the best cost for the first leg of the journey from Shanghai.

Mine arrived today, a day early. Migration from my old Air took about half an hour over ethernet, and I'm now typing this on my new baby. 🤪
What does this migration process look like? Do you have a link that describes it? I usually manually replicate all the settings, copy all my files over using a thumb drive, and manually reinstall all apps, which usually takes at least a day or longer.

Just used the Migration Assistant (Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant). This is really a secondary Mac (my mid-2017 iMac is my main system), so there wasn't much data to transfer.

The configuration you ordered is available in our local Apple store. I ordered a the MBA 8/8/512 8GB of Ram Space Grey on 29 December it shipped but is sitting in Hong Kong now. UPS says delivery this Friday, Apple says a week from today. Had I know it was going to take this long Covid or no Covid I would have gotten the MBA 8/8/1TB with 16GB Ram in the store. Allot of stores have the upper models in stock it's just not advertised / mentioned.

I placed my order for the Gold base model on 1/25 and it still has not shipped. It says the delivery date is anywhere between Feb. 2nd-9th.

I placed my order for Space Gray 8c/8gb/512gb and it is still in “Order In Progress” status with same estimated delivery dates as yours. I think it’ll be closer to 9th before delivery.

Ok, mine currently says processing as well. do you think it's back ordered?
