I second this suggestion. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can create a Shortcut to check the inventory of your local store. I use this with automations to check the stock periodically throughout the day.for those with shipping delays you might be better off checking apple store inventory. I originally ordered a base air on 12/27 with an expected ship date of 01/20 but with a bit of luck and persistence was able to locate in store stock at my local apple store and picked it up the very next day.

I think a lot of it depends on what Credit Card you used and how they calculate things. I'm using ApplePay for mine, and it's still showing as pending.
I'm in Los Angeles where every Apple Store has closed due to COVID-19. I ordered my base model M1 Air last week and it's still processing, with an estimated delivery between 1/25-2/1.
I do see units available at Best Buy (which are still open here locally) that I could pick up today, but I am doing a trade-in plus I want to take advantage of the education discount, so i guess I'll wait.
It seems weird that Apple hasn't figured out a faster way to deliver these macs to people in Southern California even with stores shut down (courier service anyone?). A bit ridiculous that a third party retailer can provide an Apple product faster.
I tried chatting with an "Apple Specialist" on their website but they weren't much help. Got the whole, "We understand this is frustrating but rest assured we are doing everything we can to get you your item by the delivery date."
Thanks Bot! It shouldn't take almost a month for a mass-produced base model.
Everyone, I can attest to this, I purchased my m1 silver MBA on the app on Tuesday 1/12 and the delivery was set for 1/27 - 2/3. I looked on that day as well as yesterday, to see if I could pick up in store but no availability. I look today and it said they are in stock, so I place the order to pick up in store and cancel my previous order. I picked up my MBA within 30 minutes of buying. So moral of the story is, I am typing this on my new MBA I wasn't supposed to get for weeks, so check at least a few times a day and I hope you guys can be as lucky!!for those with shipping delays you might be better off checking apple store inventory. That's good info! When Tim Cook joined Apple, the first thing he did was cut inventory and the number of warehouses. The Apple model relies on manufacturers holding onto components and final products whenever possible.
Apple has three distribution centers, CA, TN, and PA. In comparison, Best Buy has about 100.
Right now, Apple's distribution model relies on bulk shipping standard configurations to local distribution centers and then re-shipping to customers. It's cost-effective but slows things down.
The pandemic is a transient thing so I don't think Apple will make huge investments in distribution capacity unless it makes long term sense.
Hopefully, this will help give you a better timeline. I ordered my BTO SG 16GB/256GB on 12/21 with an estimated ETA 1/18-1/25. Two weeks no movement. Starting on week 3, 1/11 my cc was charged but still nothing and on 1/14 checked status and it says “preparing to ship”. Finally, 1/16 received notification that it shipped and checked status via UPS coming from China with a ETA 1/20; hoping that’s the true date(paid for express shipping). My card was charged two days ago, and the order status just moved to "preparing to ship". My order was originally placed on December 22, with an estimated Jan 25 - Feb 1 delivery date.
Silver - 16gb/256gb

In the way that life itself is transient, I agree. Otherwise, I don't think we have enough data that supports that thesis. The pandemic is a transient thing so I don't think Apple will make huge investments in distribution capacity unless it makes long term sense.

My M1 MacBook Air is also coming directly from China according to the tracking info. Most of my iPads and iPhones have shipped directly from China. The few have shipped from a distribution center have been models shipped for release day. I assume they were stockpiled there until release day. After release day everything has been directly shipped.
Is it different for MacBooks? I see a lot of references in this post to items being shipped, but they don't say where from.
