Ordered Dec 25, base model, still hasn’t shipped. Order says: “order in progress.” This is so frustrating. Especially because this is a gift for someone!

for those with shipping delays you might be better off checking apple store inventory. I originally ordered a base air on 12/27 with an expected ship date of 01/20 but with a bit of luck and persistence was able to locate in store stock at my local apple store and picked it up the very next day.

I second this suggestion. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can create a Shortcut to check the inventory of your local store. I use this with automations to check the stock periodically throughout the day.

I got my first one that way too.

I'm in Los Angeles where every Apple Store has closed due to COVID-19. I ordered my base model M1 Air last week and it's still processing, with an estimated delivery between 1/25-2/1.

I do see units available at Best Buy (which are still open here locally) that I could pick up today, but I am doing a trade-in plus I want to take advantage of the education discount, so i guess I'll wait.

It seems weird that Apple hasn't figured out a faster way to deliver these macs to people in Southern California even with stores shut down (courier service anyone?). A bit ridiculous that a third party retailer can provide an Apple product faster.

I tried chatting with an "Apple Specialist" on their website but they weren't much help. Got the whole, "We understand this is frustrating but rest assured we are doing everything we can to get you your item by the delivery date."

Thanks Bot! It shouldn't take almost a month for a mass-produced base model.

I think a lot of it depends on what Credit Card you used and how they calculate things. I'm using ApplePay for mine, and it's still showing as pending.

I doubt that’s the case. I had no charge, or pending charge, for 3 weeks and then all of the sudden the charge came through, but with no order update at all.

When Tim Cook joined Apple, the first thing he did was cut inventory and the number of warehouses. The Apple model relies on manufacturers holding onto components and final products whenever possible.

Apple has three distribution centers, CA, TN, and PA. In comparison, Best Buy has about 100.

Right now, Apple's distribution model relies on bulk shipping standard configurations to local distribution centers and then re-shipping to customers. It's cost-effective but slows things down.

The pandemic is a transient thing so I don't think Apple will make huge investments in distribution capacity unless it makes long term sense.

Everyone, I can attest to this, I purchased my m1 silver MBA on the app on Tuesday 1/12 and the delivery was set for 1/27 - 2/3. I looked on that day as well as yesterday, to see if I could pick up in store but no availability. I look today and it said they are in stock, so I place the order to pick up in store and cancel my previous order. I picked up my MBA within 30 minutes of buying. So moral of the story is, I am typing this on my new MBA I wasn't supposed to get for weeks, so check at least a few times a day and I hope you guys can be as lucky!! :apple::apple::D

That's good info!

I ordered on Dec 24th with a delivery estimate of Jan 25 - Feb 1(Space Grey, 8/8, 16GB mem, 512GB Storage) and it just moved to Preparing to Ship and my card is being charged. Maybe delivery dates are getting better now.

My card was charged two days ago, and the order status just moved to "preparing to ship". My order was originally placed on December 22, with an estimated Jan 25 - Feb 1 delivery date.

Silver - 16gb/256gb

Hopefully, this will help give you a better timeline. I ordered my BTO SG 16GB/256GB on 12/21 with an estimated ETA 1/18-1/25. Two weeks no movement. Starting on week 3, 1/11 my cc was charged but still nothing and on 1/14 checked status and it says “preparing to ship”. Finally, 1/16 received notification that it shipped and checked status via UPS coming from China with a ETA 1/20; hoping that’s the true date(paid for express shipping).

Hope this helps!!

I received the shipment notification late last night. The UPS tracking is estimating 1/22, so it should be here earlier than expected.

Ordered my base m1 Air in SG last week, with delivery not expected until Jan 25-Feb 1. Saw they had one in stock at Best Buy today so I picked it up and canceled my order. But then once I got it home, I noticed it was very wobbly and one of the MBA's feet wasn't making contact with flat surfaces. Total design flaw. Ended up returning it.

My order has been updated to shipped. According to Apples website, it won't arrive till Tuesday the 26th. UPS is hoping for Friday the 22nd. Either way, it's much slower than the USB dongle that came one day latter. I'm getting a little sick of the wait game, and very surprised that Apple didn't do next day or two day shipping on an order that has been in the system for a full month now.

In the way that life itself is transient, I agree. Otherwise, I don't think we have enough data that supports that thesis.

Most of my iPads and iPhones have shipped directly from China. The few have shipped from a distribution center have been models shipped for release day. I assume they were stockpiled there until release day. After release day everything has been directly shipped.

Is it different for MacBooks? I see a lot of references in this post to items being shipped, but they don't say where from.

Last year, in April, I've ordered the MacBook Air. After less than a year, the product has really a lot of problem, temperature, fans making too much noise and the battery life.

I've sold it, take the loss, and now I've ordered the MacBook Air M1. I bought it online and I'm going from Quebec to Montreal tomorrow for personnel stuff and I'm gonna grab it in the same time. Either I was waiting a month or not. I chose wisely !

My M1 MacBook Air is also coming directly from China according to the tracking info.

I suspect margins on iPhone and iPad are significantly higher compared to MacBook and allow for direct shipping. Not to mention much smaller and lighter shipping boxes.

Picked up 2 MBA M1 last week, One for my wife Standard 25g and I was also able to pick up a 16GB 1 TB as well. Now all the local apple stores are out of the Standard for days again now.. Good Luck guys.. Keep checking your local apple stores if they are still open, the NY area ones went to express pick up ONLY .

Base config in space grey, ordered January 1. Apple website says it should be coming between January 21 and 28. Based on today being the 19th and Apple still reporting "processing," I'm guessing it will be closer to the 28th…if not later.

Oh well. I've only been waiting on this since June. Back in May, my 11-inch mid-2012 Air reported its battery needed service (about two hours life on battery now), and I was promised a new MacBook as a birthday present; my birthday was six days before WWDC 2020, and a transition to Apple Silicon was promised, so I said to wait. After they were announced, I waited for them to appear on Costco Canada's website, and availability came and went, and then the listing was removed entirely from the website (it's only now reappeared). It was a better deal (about $80 savings) to order the MBA from Costco with AppleCare+, so I kept checking to little satisfaction. I then remembered I have a membership to a perks program that has a discount on Apple's website, and it ended up saving a few bucks more compared to Costco, so I placed an order on January 1.

Closest Apple Store is 25 km away, and they rarely seem to get stock, so I'm better off just waiting for the order I've already got placed. Like I said, I've been waiting since June anyway!

Apple has amazing store staff. I've ordered it and because I went to Montreal today, I just park in front of the Apple Store, I warned them on the app I was there, 2 minutes later, I was leaving with product. As always, good customer service.
