Let’s be real… Without a fully featured desktop OS, does the iPad Pro really need to be any faster than even the 2018 model?

I don't think the hardware is virtually identical. The Apple Silicon is about the only thing!Sorta agree - except for the fact that the hardware is virtually identical. Just the Macbook has a keyboard, usb-c, hdmi ports etc for the same price![]()
Wow, not even an improvement on blooming which is my least favorite thing about my 2021 model. I thought for sure they’d improve it since the 2021 MacBook Pros have significantly reduced blooming in comparison.
I’m glad I didn’t wait for this update. I got my Pro almost exactly a year ago, and I was concerned I was too late/my model would get outdated quickly since it was released in April 2021. I guess not!
The 12.9. has bloom issues? I've been using mine for >1 year and it's fine. Don't let YouTube video pundits spoil a magnificent display for 99.99999% of people. The M1 iPad was a big jump. Going from 6GB of RAM up to 16 GB. Not really sure what people expect. I am disappointed that it sounds like it still has that awful screen with bloom issues.
Saved me money. M1 not really target market for upgrade anyway but this is smallest incremental upgrade ever. Apple probably won’t upgrade 11 to oled without 12.9 and not getting profit margin to their liking. Glad for upgrade with new buyers. Better than selling 1000 day old tech like have done in past. The only thing that would have made me consider upgrading my 2021 M1 was if the new 11" got the XDR display. Now reading comments here about the blooming make me happy to stick with my 2021 Liquid Retina display that is perfect on my device.
To the random customer walking into an Apple store and saying "I need an iPad"?A new customer could have walked into an Apple Store yesterday and purchased an iPad Pro with M1, or walked in today and purchased one with M2. Which is better?
Yes it does. Even Settings app with dark mode at night shows bloom. YouTube videos, Netflix videos etc that give those pure white play/pause/skip controls show the bloom. I watch a lot of sci Ti stuff. So you know. Space, dark scenes. The 12.9. has bloom issues? I've been using mine for >1 year and it's fine. I still prefer the XDR with its blooming over the LCD Liquid Retina display, but it’s still very annoying. Definitely feels like a stopgap technology. I don’t think the iPads will innovate much until they get OLED in a couple years. Looks like the 11” model won’t get better contrast until then. The only thing that would have made me consider upgrading my 2021 M1 was if the new 11" got the XDR display. At this rate my 2018 iPad Pro will be good for another year. This is one of the smallest upgrades I can remember for an iPad.
Why do you want to throw your money away? What is wrong with your m1? Dude I’m running 2018 ipad pro and it’s still a beast.I was looking for a reason to replace my M1 iPad Pro and this ain’t it. A faster processor and WiFi is pretty much it. Does the new modem do 5G UWB or just regular 5G?
My previous iPad M1 didn't have AppleCare. So that's the reason for the extra costs. In my case.Paying $500 to upgrade from M1 iPad to M2 iPad is just a bad decision. Now if you were coming from a 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 then MAYBE it may be worth it, but even then it is still the same iPad. It functions the same and everything. People do not upgrade yearly on tablets compared to phones. I am still waiting for full OLED display iPad and more freedom on iPadOS then I will consider upgrading from my 2018 iPad Pro.
But you could have the new one for $99 moreI'd gladly pay you $700 for said iPad.
I work for a company and I get the opportunity to get new devices and hand down my old ones. I was hoping the new IPP would have some reason I could justify getting and then give my old one to a coworker. Hard to justify this one.Why do you want to throw your money away? What is wrong with your m1? Dude I’m running 2018 ipad pro and it’s still a beast.
Easy answer. The reason they're working on things like proper external monitor support and Stage Manager is because they want these devices to support a proper desktop OS. Clearly this is the path that they're on.Let’s be real… Without a fully featured desktop OS, does the iPad Pro really need to be any faster than even the 2018 model?
They already can support a proper desktop OS. Gimme a break. Have been for years now.Easy answer. The reason they're working on things like proper external monitor support and Stage Manager is because they want these devices to support a proper desktop OS. Clearly this is the path that they're on.
Probably lost already 80% of value so not more/left to loose by waiting. Just saying. Not going to judge you buying anything you want and when. Enjoy. My previous iPad M1 didn't have AppleCare. So that's the reason for the extra costs. In my case.
If you wait longer, the older device will lose more value in a trade in. Plus, I'm sure the battery on the 2018 is not going to be optimal much longer than another year or so. To each is own, but I have had this M1 for about a year or so. Which means it's cost me about $1.15 or so a day to own. All depends on how you value the device I suppose. I have Wi-Fi 6E at home. So I will get use out of that. Plus the memory speed bump, CPU, Neural AI/ML etc. Which helps with my DJ app that supports using it. Everything for me should be faster.
Thankfully I don't need an updated camera. I would have liked having mini LED on the 11" model though. I almost went up to the larger size, but I currently don't need it that badly.![]()
I think the iPad 3-4 was the smallest upgrade ever. The only difference was ditching the old 30 pin connector for the new Lightning connector. Nothing else changed. This is one of the smallest upgrades I can remember for an iPad.
