Yeah, it only took them another 4+ years to get the first version of Mac OS X out the door! Mac OS X, even after the NeXT acquisition, still took awhile to get everything in place.

I'd consider 4 years pretty fast to write an operating system. It takes years to develop any non-trivial business application, and operating systems are far more complex than any business app. They probably spent over a year just doing design. I've done just enough OS development to know that I should give proper respect to those that write them.

The only good thing about getting Vista compatibility would be the ability to run all those apps out for Vista that aren't available on any other OS. I have a pre-release version of Vista on my MBP to run a few games. Works fairly well. The driver CD that bootcamp makes for XP installs all the really necessary drivers. Only ones that didn't work that I really care about were the iSight & wireless drivers, but I was able to download the drivers for Airport.

But can't they just add support in an update? They wouldnt have to wait till October for that.

To write an entire operating system, perhaps, from scratch. I've tried to write an operating system before (just me. One person). I spent a month or two fiddling around, (but I didn't have endless free time) probably 80-100 hours... I made something that showed some stuff on the screen, allowed input with mouse and keyboard, and... that was about it.

But, if I bothered to figure out the underpinnings of UNIX/Linux, and tried to go from there... I have no idea how long it would take. For Apple it probably took them plenty of time to write code for OS 9 emulation. For Microsoft's Vista mess, well, that's what happens when you have very old, and thus very messy, code.

Erm - iMac 24"

Boot Vista Ultimate via Boot Camp - no problem.

Bluetooth works etc.

No iSight but that's about it.

Think this rumour has come from Acme **** Mill inc.

However, do also agree that delay could be down to something else. Find it strange that new 'secret' features aren't about yet - surely they need testing by the masses?

Secret items are just that: Secret, and since there are developers out there that would not be able to keep a secret, Apple wisely chooses not to disclose them until the very last moment, risky indeed, but perhaps worth it.

I am looking forward to the secrets, but just hope that they won't dissappoint, as with all the hype, it could easily get to be a let down...

I hope I am wrong :)

If Windows compatibility is the delay, it won't be Vista or Boot Camp at the heart of it.

It will be how Leopard integrates with Longhorn Server.

I'm getting sick of all these rumors. they're nothing more then the timeline that apple should, but doesn't publish (for the most part). Where's the elevator pics, or some *real* rumors about some unknown new product.. like the iPod (before it was released) or that asteroid thing?

No opinion as to whether this is true, or not. But, if so, and for the reasons stated, I would find it surprising. An earlier poster made a profound point; too many SW products are dependent on Leo to allow a prolonged delay to occur. Would you delay FCS6, Quake 5 (if there will be such a thing), iWork 7, iLife 7 (part of your HW sales incentives) to be delayed because of Vista compatibility? I sure as h**l would not.

Those who suggested Bootcamp would be adversely impacted, because of XP unavailability, are not wrong per se. However, they are over-reacting to the Vista market size, and life cycle of XP. Vista is not gathering any momentum within my periphery. I was at an construction IT Managers meeting this afternoon. I estimate that only 10% of my colleagues were ordering Vista with their new purchases. Most of us purchase Windows hardware from HP and Dell. It was suggested we write a joint letter to both vendors (and letting each know the other was receiving the letter), expressing our requirement that XP continues be an elective option.

I doubt Apple is too worried about supporting Vista (for the next year anyway). Certainly not to the level they would alter their strategic product release plans.

Folks, calm down.

When MR says "DigiTimes has been historically inaccurate" it's just being polite. It should read "DigiTimes has never been right, ever."

I don't pay any attention to anything DigiTimes says - iBook G5 in April '05 anyone? - and neither should any of you.

I just don't see that happening...=/

I am willing to not argue the point.

IF it happens it will be "not ready for prime time" according to you.

IF it does not happen the consequences are minimal to Apple as a corporation. It is fairly common for Apple to release "news" at WWDC only to have those announcements actually delivered later. I accept that. The stock market "expects" that BTW.

Apple can release "new" hardware with OS 10.4.9 (heck, it's stable!) anytime with no consequences whatsoever, and whether or not they give a "coupon" for a 10.5 update people will be "nearly" as happy. After all, the hardware delivered will do what it was promised to do on delivery (unlike my iBook G4 lemon still collecting dust waiting for Apple to save me).

But here's the thing. WHEN Leopard (10.5.0) is released, there will be a euphoria phase with early adopters and a "rage" of happiness. Many will submit bug reports, there will be whining over bugs. Some will claim lost data and kidnapped children.

Then 10.5.1 will be released. Calm will overtake the chaos and people's love of all things Macintosh will reveal itself to all blogs, websites, listserves, TV shows and newly minted internet TV shows and channels. It will be good.

The day will commence. Where the hell is 10.6?

Rocketman

This is the way it always will be, people will always have something to complain about. And im just saying i dont see them waiting for Vista, i think thats what i was saying anyway.

Merit to this rumor

At first, I agreed B.S., but now I'm not so sure. Here's why:

The MP3 related lawsuits and others may prevent Apple from releasing Leopard until the issue is resolved.

http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/23/patent-troll-claims-creation-of-mp3-player-sues-everyone/

Either Apple has gotten warning to not release new software that violates this patent, now that a lawsuit is filed, or they're trying to stall to wait for this to reach some sort of resolution before blowing the OS or the phone.
