What about a studio computer? One with no internet access that you need to load audio applications onto...like boxed versions of Ableton Live, Reason, Cubase, and large sound libraries...and on top of that, you need to import audio from CD constantly on an audio studio computer. Having a disc drive is ESSENTIAL and you cannot do without it. Some people just don't seem to understand this -- many Macs are used in applications in which they are NOT connected to the internet. They are studio machines for WORK -- and you NEED that OPTICAL DRIVE! YES!

If you are interested, I found an external CD drive on the ground 2 days ago. Yes, it was on the ground. You want it?

I did say 1920x1200 on the 17" MacBook Pro. The 15" Retina is 2800x1800 Total pixel resolution on the display, it is super-high DPI...but the way it is setup to work with workable screen space in Mac OS X uses pixel-doubling to give you a simulated workspace resolution of 1440x900 by default on that model. You can adjust it to 1920x1200 in the settings, however, like you said, it's making the screen elements too tiny on a 15" to really work with a 1920x1200 workspace size. The native resolution of the 17" is 1920x1200, and the display is large enough that the resolution is ideal to use.

This. We don't all have 20/20 vision, unfortunately, and many of us need the screen real estate of the 17". When it was discontinued, I immediately bought a refurb 1920x1200 2011 17" MBP...when it goes, so will I, despite having owned nothing other than Apple machines since 2006. Can't get much work done with Accessibility options turned on

Stopped at Best Buy today. Haven't been there in a year. I couldn't believe the cool pc designs. Almost all the laptops had touch screens, the montitors flipped over and back, my favorite was the DELL XPS 18 Portable All-in-One. That is one awesome computer and it was only $950. I love my macs but I was really tempted to get this one. Almost every computer there was under $999. You can really get a nice computer for under a G. Then I walked over to the mac section and it was really sad. Double the price for the cheapest computer. No touch screens. No flip flop screens, nothing. Hell not even disc drives anymore. Lame. Not a single person over there either. It was really sad.

Any PC under a grand is going to be a wonderful piece of equipment for about 12 months, then it's going to start falling to pieces. Just because there are cheaper machines over on the PC side of things doesn't mean the quality is comparable or that it's a wise way to spend your cash. My workplace ordered 12 Dell desktops (all under $1000) last year and already 4 of them have had failed motherboards and/or power supplies. I don't remember the last time I saw that with a Mac.

Also, every time I walk into the local Best Buy, the Apple section is always crowded and the most noticeably busy part of the store. Not that it really matters. I mean, anecdotal evidence is pretty silly to begin with but if we're setting the bar that low, I guess I'll counter yours with mine.

I've wanted to buy a Mac for about a year and a bit now but none of their machines have grabbed me. Because of a lack of updates I'm trying to switch to Ubuntu for my main machine.

Well, people don't need to buy a new iPod every year; also, most people need a phone, so why have both a phone and an iPod when they can have an iPhone instead? With carrier subsidizing, it makes more sense to get an iPhone than an iPod.

Also, everyone here knows that a lot of people are waiting for the new Mac models to be released; it makes no sense to buy any now.

Tim Cook said this was going to be a very special year for Apple products, so what do you think people are waiting for? Maybe this is a good reason why Macs are not selling a lot nowadays, but wait a little and you'll see.:D

There's not really much in their current line up to tempt me to upgrade. I want a machine that has discrete graphics so I can game, an optical drive to install software, an Ethernet port to connect to a wired network and upgradeable hard disk and ram. Oh and a non-glossy display so I don't have to stare at my own reflection while working in a well lit area.

Call me old fashioned if you like...

This.

I'd love to have a brand new MBP, but I guess I'm not their target anymore…

I was planning to buy a MacBook Pro, and am still planning to buy one as soon as they have a refresh. Sales are low because they didn't come out with a refresh as most people expected, and they have an annual refresh schedule so that most people hold off on purchases because they know the new one will be released. Plus, current Macs are way to expensive for components over a year old, and a new Ultrabook are cheaper. And the MacBook Air is more advanced than the current MacBook Pro.

I believe you're all mistaken when you say Apple abandoned the Mac. Going to buy one next year (plus an iPad), and you can be sure that I wouldn't buy it if I didn't like the iPhone so much.
Plus the tablet market won't grow forever.

No no, of course they didn't abandon the Mac, I'm not saying that at all. They still make the best computers on the planet. It's just surprising to see a once computer company now making far far more sales of iPads and iPhones than computers. That doesn't mean the Mac is dead or anything. It's better than ever in fact.

I got a Quadcore Samsung Laptop for $850, it's over 2 years old and functioning perfectly. Additionally it was a version with essentially a clean install and 2-3 programs per-installed by Samsung. On the other hand, I have a 6 year old HP that's was over $1000 when I bought it. It's still working, but started crapping out 6-12 months in to it's use. When I ordered it I requested nothing installed on it, but HP per-installed a bunch of crapware anyway. It had a bunch of redundancies like a yahoo search program embedded into the system that replicated windows search. There was a secondary HP taskbar that had no purpose. Anyway, I eventually wiped the laptop and replaced it with a clean install and it's been working fine. It's still functioning, and I use it as a media center PC.

The reason why really cheap PCs suck is because of the OEM's customization with a bunch of useless programs they "think" will be useful for the consumer. However they're so redundant and so poorly developed that it ends up corrupting the device.

In terms of Best Buy it really depends which Best Buy you go to, and when you go to them. I've been to Best Buys where the Apple section is busy, and I've been to Best Buys where the Apple section looks completely empty. The honest truth is, Best Buys are horrible places to buy computers, and their service sucks. I friend bought a new computer from them, and it was a refurbished computer that Best Buy didn't even bother to factory reset. They also tend to have worn out power cables connected to their Apple products, also Apple does a piss poor job at making long lasting power cables. The other day I was at a major metropolitan Apple Store, and you could see several of their lightning cables fray and discolored.

You don't think there is a market for 17" laptops? Almost all other manufacturers offer 17+ inch models. I once had a 20" Dell XPS M2010 laptop, now that was certainly way too big. :)

When Apple stopped selling them officially, all the remaining 17" MBPs went into the "refurbished" section on the store. It took almost a year until they were all sold, that's how high the demand is.

what are you guys talking about, the iMac is amazingly thin! ;)

if they update everything in the Sept/Oct window, they will have a pretty good last quarter.

I'm amazed to see how much of the news on these sites is actually controlled and managed by Apple.
Do you really think they will let a pretty (eastern) guy take pictures of their development or production? You guys don't think they have contracts for this?
Everything is staged.

No we don't.

are you still on DSL? you're living in 2003 my friend.

You have it already. It's on that trackpad that's in front of the keyboard on your laptop, or sitting next to the keyboard on the desktop. And look, no fingerprints on the screen!!

bored with it. old technology. make a screen that's treated and doesn't leave fingerprints.

it's like I'm the only one who doesn't expect innovative tech companies to continue pushing the envelope.

My question is if they get rid of the mac line, who will code apps for them? They can't do it on Windows, even if they ported Xcode, cause they would keep losing their work to the blue screen.

Excuse me, but what company would get rid of a product line that makes them multi-billion profits every year? There was a report quite recently that Apple takes 45% of all profits made by computer manufacturers. Dell made 13%, but now their profits dropped by two thirds  So why would the most successful computer maker get out of the business?

for god sake, release a mini tower with all desktop specs and dedicated graphics card.
Mac Mini is such a waste of computing power with those laptop parts and energy saving options.
I bet the mini tower is going to sell like hot cakes, they'll be cheaper and easy to upgrade.

I don't know why (since i'm not in the market for a new laptop), but I find it sad that Apple isn't updating their laptops. Who cares about a gold phone?

Well I've been waiting to buy a damn mac for months. It's Apple's own fault they aren't making money since they don't put out products. And if there is no dgpu on the retina macbook pros then I'll laugh when they won't sell much of those. It's the price they pay for their arrogance.

They don't make money?????

Okay, I can suffer with having to purchase an additional drive for the new "all-in-one" iMac. However removing the CD/DVD drive from the laptop seems ridiculous!

CDs and DVDs are still legitimate media that are in widespread use. Having to also carry a seperate drive for the laptop is NOT giving the consumer what we want or need!

I have an external drive for my MacBook. Cost £15. I use it from time to time (because when I buy music, I check prices at Apple / Amazon download / Amazon CD / play.com CD) and buy where it is the cheapest, and thanks to iTunes Match it's all the same in the end) :D I _never_ felt a need to have an external drive on the road.

They don't make money?????

I wish I made 0.01% of the money that Apple makes :)

How are they not getting updated? They created the retina Macbooks what, last year. They just updated the Mac Pro and the iMac. All of them get updated cpus and internals when updates happen. How are they not updating these, please explain?

Short term memory less. Not a single Macintosh product has been updated since it was updated the last time.

My heart bleeds! How you must be suffering on that ancient bit of kit!!

Last month I replaced my early 2007 MBP with a new Mac Mini so I like to think I have contributed. To be honest, though, I could have easily gone another year on the MBP but I fancied a treat. Before the MBP I was on my lime green 2001 iMac (which I still have). These Macs last well :)

Yeah, don't really get you guys.
Still have a '08 PC setup (bought for $1000 :p) and it works pretty fine; didn't even put a SSD on it yet.
I can't understand how you call 5-yr-old machines "ancient".

i will get one

i have the 2006 version and it is very slow.

I'm unhappy that I will have to pay 700 USD more, because they sell it in Europe.

Retina, Wifiac, and new thunderbolt should be in??????

Well I just bought a Mac last week...but I bought it used, it's a smart way to save some money on the premium cost of an Apple computer as long as you're aware and approve of the condition.
