Called Apple on Wednesday and the sales guy informed me that the big event planned for the end of February has absolutely nothing to do with an update to their line of computers. So, if nothing comes next Tuesday (Feb 19th) then I think I'll just buy an existing MBP and if it's obsolete come March/April then so be it.

Perhaps this guy just wanted me to buy on the spot, so take it for what it's worth.

smells like BS. it's not that they'd be obsolete, just that current mbp's won't be top notch for much longer. most current computers will take a while to become obsolete... they're far more powerful than most people need.

They were updated in November. What were you waiting for?
As everyone else knows, "they" were not updated in November. In June 2007, $2000 got you the same MBP that it did the following November and the same one you can get now. Extra BTO options are not the same as updates.

the worst part is the waiting game for shipments to arrive when they finally announce the thing.

waiting for the new mbp to come out has been rough, but waiting for it to arrive will be even harder!

I think it will be much more easier to wait for them to ship. We would atleast have a 100% confirmed date instead of relying on false hopes and rumors every tuesday haha.

I've had too many Tuesday disappointments. I'm ignoring this rumour.

i know exactly how u feel.

but i heard the same rumour here in australia. a guy in David Jones (retailer) said they couldn't get 2.2ghz mbp. so yeah i personally think they are reducing stocks, and getting ready for a a new release, but i dunno whem, and i am finding the constant failed tuesday update really starting to get under my skin.

i am about to start uni again, and really need one ASAP before my assessment period starts.

cheers

I already need one to follow along in my graphics class grrr. I would prefer a known release date (and waiting for it to ship) rather than looking forward to every tuesday. And a PC laptop just won't do for the moment as they're all disappointing in one way or another :p

Now that Steve is confirming the new Iphone software-update in feb 2008, I don't think they'll release the new Macbook Pro! Don't you guys think that he would not do those together?

Tuesday-dissapointments suck

I get a 17% discount on all Apple products through my employer - but only if I purchase online. I've been waiting so long for this pissing computer that I reckon I'll pay full price the moment they come into the shops. You win, Apple, you win.

yes i agree :( unfortunately

so much else is being released, it would probably be a bad business move to release a new product while so much else is happening. there is another rumoured release date on 17th, i am really starting to think this is more realistic

but the reality this is the very frustrating for me, cause i kinda need one soon. otherwise, i might just forfeit changing to mac all together.

i hope the mbp will be released with in 2/3 weeks.

i saw that Asus, is releasing a 17", 4gb ram, Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 , 300gb internal HD plus a 120gb external HD, 8700gt, gigalan, 5usb ports, + mx518 mouse, etc ... for just 1754€.

The current :apple:mbp 15" costs 1900€ , :apple:mbp 17" 2700€

For someone that earns the normal minimum wage of 400€ month, get very complicated to "run away" from windows.

But i really would like to change to mac, really need a viable computer for my computer eng. course.

Somehow i doubt that apple will update so much the mbp line and keep or lower prices.

Its the price to pay, to go the mac way.

If you own a company and you plan to release an updated product, but you observe that the old product is still selling like hot cakes and there's still stock of it to go, would you release the new one?. Or would you wait till you clear out most of the old stock?.

One can argue that the only reason to release a new MBP is not only improving sales, but keep it up with the competition. Yes, but what competition?. If I remember properly it was around a three months ago when MBP was the fastest computer running Vista. On the other hand, where are all those other computers featuring penryn processors from other manufacturers?. As far as I know, they've been announced, but haven't been shipped yet.

I am also waiting for the MBP, but just because my current computer is a 3 year-old iBook G4 that it's not enough anymore. I know I could buy the current ones that are perfectly fine, but I think that would be plain stupid except in emergency situations (you absolutely need a computer and your current one has been stolen...). Imagine I have an old car that still works and I decide to buy a new one. Then I do a little research and I find out that the car I want is going to be replaced by a better-improved car FOR THE SAME PRICE. Would you really buy the old one?.

what if it isn't a Penryn processor?

I wonder if :apple: has secretly managed, as most of time does to make Intel develop a new processor particulary designed for Leopard and the redesigned MBP, and this is the reason why we have been waiting so long?
They did it for the MacBook Air, what forbids them to do it for the MBP?

I hope :apple: makes it again and surprise us with a more powerful, less power consuming chip that allow us to have the latest and greatest mac portable ever!

What do you guys think?

the cost of developing a chip for leopard only would stop them.

the repackage chips in teh air is being used in normal PC laptops. the sale of macbook airs alone would not be enough incentive for intel to develop a new chip.

now the smaller package cpu in not just a leopard chip it it completely compatible with current intel cpus. to repackage a cpu just for a macbook wouldn't be feasable, and to make a cpu just for leopard would probably lock out boot camp of windows, and they wouldn't make enough money on apple sales alone from macbook pros.

Um, until we start seeing 5+ day delays on MBP shipments from apple.com, the new models won't be released for at least another week. What's happening at Best Buy is meaningless, has no bearing on when Apple decides to say go. BB is playing the same guessing game as the rest of us here.

When I say Leopard I mean that also the BootCamp Assistant will work, it's a Leopard feature, and why not this processor may also be used in other computers but it will be released initially for :apple: , therefore the business case will be more robust.

eh??

According to the Apple site, MBP's are only ahead of hotter selling AppleCare & Mac...

" Come get your 'AppleCare & Mac' while they're hot!!!"

Well, this might be a clue:

I put in an order for a replacement 2.2 MBP on Tuesday. It originally had a 'ships by feb. 13-15' status. This morning it was changed to 'ships by feb. 20-22'.

New MBP's? Maybe I'm getting one!

Is this true? Have 5+ day delays happened before all other new computer releases? It seems unlikely that Apple would have predicted to produce exactly the number of current macbook pros so that they would run out exactly one week before releasing the next version.

My birthday is Feb 19! Im pretty sure Steve Jobs knows this, so you guys can be assured that it comes out this tuesday! :p

*Crosses fingers*

Seriously, how cool of a birthday present would that be?
