hmm. so i'm guessing the base mbp's will start at 2.4 or 2.5
...
2.5 will be the base, with 6mb cache.

I think a .1ghz difference would not justify the cost. From 2.5 to 2.8, not we're talking. I think there will be a low-end model with the 2.4ghz 3mb cache chips. And it sounds better to have a 2.6ghz as standard and a 2.8 extreme option. I wonder when we will see the full efforts of apples thermal engineering abilities applied to a truly "PRO" portable. Which is hotter, a powerbook G5, or a MBP 2.8ghz penryn with a 512mb Gpu?

That best buy is running out of stock does not mean ANYTHING.

I remember when i was in the market for the newly released macbook santa rosa update back in november. It was december and my local best buy still carried the 2.16 ghz models.

this is over-speculation, IMO. no doubt we are due for a new mbp, but i don't consider this to be strong evidence.

That is why it is on page 2.

That's because Best Buy and most of its employees are ignorant and don't know what they're talking about (I, regretably, worked there for a short while..my personal dark age). Best Buy is a good source for tech info about as much as dog crap is a good source for water. But still, I wouldn't doubt MBP stocks are running dry.

I have a funny story about this. I was was Best Buy a few months ago and saw a woman wanting to buy a mac but totally confused. The BB employee who she was asking questions too was completely inept. So, being the Mac nerd I am, I butted in and answered all here questions and within a few minutes found out she was a photographer. I recomended a macbook pro and Aperture. She was extatic over my help and thanked me graciously. I told her all about the different features a mac has and how OSX was superior to Windows. After a few minutes the BB employee was listening over her shoulder like I was the one working there...lol.

Just goes to show how uneducated their employees are about their own product. And to think, I wasn't hired several times in my college days there.

I say you should apply for a position at BB then :D Question is: what kind of person (after getting a college degree) would want to work as a store clerk for $10/hr

Um, cut these folks some slack. They're mostly kids trying to earn a few dollars so that they can get drunk on weekends. Sheesh.

You thought you got it bad? Here in Canada, there was this lady at best buy asking the difference between a MAC and Windows PC. It took THREE Bestbuy guys to tell her the differences. This is what they said:

What the Bestbuy guys said about the MAC comparing to Windows PC:
Mac never gets viruses, the shortcut icons are at the bottom center of the screen instead of floating around the desktop, they come with a Band editing tool (iMusic), they are more for children.

After getting that answer, the lady didn't buy the MAC, she went ahead and bought a PC.

Haha, the exact reason I stack shelevs and serve at the local supermarket.

Also, I was reading the other thread - about using the serial number to tell the date your product was made. What does it mean if people are getting MacBook Pros that were made only a few weeks ago? I'm not sure if thats a good or bad sign. :S

Best Buy's website is now listing the 15" 2.4GHz MBP as "sold out" instead of "backordered". But it's still "available at most stores", for what it's worth.

The "new" icon above the Mac Pro on the Apple store page has been removed since A2 was released. Hopefully there will be a "new" above the MBP on tuesday ;). A hint perhaps, if apple took the "new" off the Mp at the debut of Aperture 2, then one could conclude that Apple is not directly advertising the Mp to professional photographers via the main store page. Thus there exists an opportunity for apple to advertise Pro portables to the aperture market. Odd, do Pro-tographers use portables or towers? a high end video card in the new MBP could be used as a push toward pro needs, like twin 30" ACDs. good way to plug Final cut as well.

Can someone tell me... If this Tuesday the new MBPs are announced. How long will it be until they show up in US Apple stores?
Will they show up in all stores simultaneously the day they're announced? Will thy trickle in to varied stores irregularly over the following weeks?
Do people that order online get theirs faster than those who buy in retail?

I just need to know how to get mine as FAST as possible. If it means a day trip from Vancouver to Seattle to pick one up, then so be it. But that new MBP cannot be in my hands fast enough. I need to have a laptop to start a new job and it's seriously holding me up.

Actually, the difference between the 2.4 and 2.5 GHz models is greater than it is between the 2.5 and the 2.8. With the former, you go from 3Mb cache to 6 Mb cache, while the latter only gives you a speed bump.
I hope we get the 2.5 GHz in the MBP base model, although along with other comments in the thread, I seriously doubt it.

I really hope they will be released this tuesday. My PowerBook died last week and now I have to use several Windows desktops to make sure I always have a computer to use (dorm, home, work,...).

Maybe Wednesday

Apple usually doesn't release on a Tuesday when the Tuesday follows a major US holiday. The few times Apple has released on a Wednesday is when Monday is a holiday.

In the US this Monday is President's Day. Hard to say if it is a "major" holiday or not - my office is closed.

Just sayin-Wednesday may be the release date this week, if there is a release this week.

My Mac Book Pro Shipment Date Feb 25

I am receiving a new top of the line 15 inch mac book pro from my work. Our IT guy ordered it straight from apple over the phone on Feb. 9. The ship date is now listed as February 25. Could be a sign of things to come.

Is it BTO or just one of the models offered?. That could make a big difference.

New MacBook Pros about to be announced

I can confirm that the announcement will be soon. This is just from calling around and asking distributors their advice about purchasing.
