I can confirm that the announcement will be soon. This is just from calling around and asking distributors their advice about purchasing.

So let me get this straight, you bypassed retailers and went right to the distributers; how many distributors does Apple have in the US?

Apple usually doesn't release on a Tuesday when the Tuesday follows a major US holiday. The few times Apple has released on a Wednesday is when Monday is a holiday.

In the US this Monday is President's Day. Hard to say if it is a "major" holiday or not - my office is closed.

Just sayin-Wednesday may be the release date this week, if there is a release this week.

President's Day is a holiday that is observed by a lot of people including the US Postal Service. However it is not a holiday for Fedex and UPS. (Actually they recognize it as a holiday but don't observe it... so they are still open and shipping/delivering that day)

So, what company does Apple normally use for shipping products to their stores? One of the more known companies, ie UPS, Fedex... or a less known one?

I was thinking the same thing...however, I'm guessing that by "distributors" he meant "retailers." In other words, this amounts to nothing mere than more speculation because most readers of this blog are better informed than anyone working at a retailer.

Do new Macs affect refurb prices?

Hello:

I hardly ever post, but read MacRumors regularly. I am watching for the release of new MacBook Pros like all of you, but mainly because I am hoping it affects the refurb prices. The max I can spend is around $2300, which can get me an incredible 17" 2.4 GHz refurb. I could order now, or wait another week in hopes that the release of the new MacBooks will cut the current refurb prices another few hundred dollars. Is that a reasonable hope or expectation?

Best Buy Sales Event

I am new to this thread, but been slightly obsessed with the MBP upgrade coming. I am hoping it is this Tuesday because Apple is sending me a new MBP since this one is a piece o' crapola.... been in the shop 5 times.

I was in Best Buy yesterday.... and they are promoting this huge Apple sales event... taking place tonight actually.... Apple people are there to do raffles and there is going to be a big sale... whatever the hell that means. Also our local Fry's store is discounting all Macbook pros ONLY. I just think that with all the news of MBP on backorder and shipment dates pushed back.. this is just one more thing that tells me an update is coming any day now.

From what I've seen, they typically use FedEx or DHL. The last time I was at an Apple store, there was a FedEx guy delivering stuff in the back - and no, it was a couple weeks ago, I'm sure it wasn't a shipment of new MBP's ;)

No additional discounts on refurbs

Hi Eddie,

I have not personally seen Apple further discount their refurbs after a new release. The price of the refurbs is based on the original list price of that particular model. You might accidentally luck out and get a slightly better deal after the release but I don't think it will happen.

Yes, I meant retailers. In this circumstance I think they knew what they were talking about, and weren't speculating. But I would agree that we will have to wait and see.

I have wanted to get my own laptop for a couple months now and i have a job and have saved up enough money to buy one. I am going to college next fall so i dont know if i should buy a laptop now or get one right before next fall to get the newest version of the macbook pro. Lets say a new macbook pro comes out this tuesday, the 19th. If i bought one right away do you think that they will make better improvements on it by next fall and make a better one, and will they need to fix major problems with the first batch of them so should i wait a couple months until the make one that works really well. Im just not sure if i should get the new macbook pro when it comes or should i wait until they get a lot of the beginning problems out of them and get them at the end of the summer, i really dont want to wait that long. Im very new to macbook pros, did the first batch of laptops with the santa rosa have problems, and if so were they mechanical probs or could they be fixed with a quick downloadable update. Thanks

The best strategy is to wait until you really need it (or until one's AppleCare has expired on one's present MacBook [Pro]). This applies to almost everything, but particularly Apple computers.

After having said that, it's unlikely that this release will be buggy (most of the components aren't brand new technology) and also unlikely that there will be a major refresh before September.

I live in Tokyo, Japan, and I can report we're having the same situation here.

I recently went to Yodobashi Camera, Bic Camera and Softmap (the three biggest consumer electronics retailers) and the Macbook Pro 17" was sold out everywhere. The 15" was still available though.

When I asked some information, an employee at Yodobashi Camera seriously hinted about a new Macbook Pro model coming out soon.
He was probably just trying to suggest me to wait (I was willing to buy the 17" model that very same day).
Everything else from Apple was in stock, of course.

He then added he could not say anything more about the topic, not to risk being fired.

Other employees at Softmap instead were more neutral and didn't hint at anything even though I pushed a little bit.

Anyway, although I am not really such a rumors fanatic or up-to-date as you guys are, I guess something is moving.
It's extremely rare that in Tokyo, Japan, in such a huge electronics mecca as Akihabara, in the world's biggest computers store, a Macbook Pro is out of stock (with no words on a re-stock date, btw).

He then added he could not say anything more about the topic, not to risk being fired.

that's impossible, Apple employees who work in the store won't know **** about what and when the new MBP are coming out. They are the outsiders of Apple, not the insiders.

It's true, I've known a few of the employees of our local Apple store in Cincinnati. They are kept completely in the dark about new products. Probably because most of them are just part-time workers and could care less about whether they get fired or not, so they wouldn't think twice about leaking information.

Yeah, I think most Apple store employees probably come here to see if anything new is in the pipelines. :p

However - and I just mention this because I've been dealing with Apple reps extensively due to the number of problems I've had with my last 2 MBP's - A couple Fridays ago I got a call from Apple offering to replace my MBP rather than sending it in for another repair. I was super happy about that prospect. I wanted to buy a 23" ACD, so I asked if I could throw it in with the order. The catch was that I hadn't received the credit card in the mail yet, so I asked if I could wait a week. He went along with it, but he asked, "so... you want to wait a week to order.... because the credit card isn't here yet? are you sure?" he seemed really suspicious about why i'd want to wait a week, kind of like he knew something might be happening with either the MBP's and ACD's - heck, maybe both.

so here I am, waiting on my MBP to ship - the original ship date was slated for feb. 13-15 - then it mysteriously changed to a whole week later, feb. 20-22.

all a little too suspicious if you ask me.

How do you know? Were you there?

p.s. Copy any of my posts lately?

You probably are not considering two important things:

1- This is Japan, not USA. Yodobashi Camera employees are way more nerd and knowledgeable than all of us here, probably.
In Japan, the service you get is hundreds of times more reliable and precise than in the US, Canada and even Europe.
I did experience this myself, being a frequent buyer both in US and Japan.
Moreover, please never underestimate how the Japanese can be personally passionate about things, whether they are employees or not.

2 - Yodobashi Camera Akiba is the world's biggest consumer electronic store.
Yodobashi Camera is the biggest consumer electronic chain in Japan.
Its influence on businesses is way greater than you may think.
Like Walmart is literally (sometimes even directly) leading some financial decisions in the development of many (if not all) AAA video games in US and Canada, I wouldn't be surprised if here in Japan Yodobashi Camera management was closer to some "corporate sources" than we all might possibly think.
After this, info leaking among departments is very common.

Trust me, I used to work for Ubisoft, and I got to know how huge distribution channels can frequently (and sadly) be involved into corporate decisions.

That being said, I am just reporting a feeling from Tokyo, which can be significant in my opinion since the thing is really getting worldwide.

I am not taking from granted what the employee tried to say or suggest me indirectly, but at the same time I've learnt to trust Japanese people way more than anyone else :)

Hmm... Seems like a lot of MBPs are now re-scheduled for a ship date of Feb. 20-22. Suspicious indeed!

Depending on the availability of the Penryn chips, and now that the OS has been updated, I'm really hoping updated models will be announced the 19th or 20th—shipping Feb. 20th!

Seems like great timing too. They can use all the President's Day sales to clear out any remaining stock to make way for the shiny new macs they'll be putting on display. Right?

Pleeeeeeeeease???:apple:!!:p

im sick of computers getting thinner, its not like my laptop case is getting smaller or anything, i want it to look cool like an ibook, not like a piece of cardboard spray painted grey. titanium would be cool, heck why not tungsten or iridium, or gold, why isnt the macbook GOLD, forget aluminum being attractive to recyclers make that sucker out of gold and people will look through heaps of garbage and fight wild dogs for that sucker. and why cant i see through it, it should be so luminescent that i can read what fortune cookie i didnt notice as i put my laptop down, and the bottom should be a scanner a scanner that can read CD's so i can throw all my cds in a big pile and just put my computer on top and have everything read. this penryn update is nothing NOTHING compared to what it should be and i am appauled to even hear of its existence. i hope that :apple: realizes they have been living in the past and embrace slavery, slavery of insects slavery of viruses, imagine a box full of inslaved micro-organisms they could out perform any duo smuo processor pedes down.
