Am I missing something? This seems obvious giving the difference. The new macbook pro without a touch bar sounds like a rip-off just comparing to the model up from it that has one.

$1,499
NO FANCY TOUCH BAR
2.0GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor (or $1,799 - 2.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor)
8GB 1866MHz memory
Intel Iris Graphics 540
Two Thunderbolt 3 ports

$1,799
TOUCH BAR
2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor
8GB 2133MHz memory
Intel Iris Graphics 550
Four Thunderbolt 3 ports

What about the 2.4GHz i7 is better than the 2.9GHz i5 that so many other specs could be worse while still equaling the same price? The macbook pro without a touch bar sounds more like a larger screen macbook that was forced to use a processor with a fan until something better comes along from Intel to remove the fan.

There's an even bigger difference than it looks from that list. The low end 13" is only a 15w (ultrabook/macbook air) cpu while the higher end one is the 28w one traditionally put in the 13" MacBook Pro. It's a big difference in compute power.

I was really hoping folks would protest the direction Apple is heading with their wallets but it doesn't seem that's happening yet.

Ha. All 20 of the "Pro" users out there will gladly pay the ridiculous prices Apple is asking and then we shall see. How many of us have paid too much for an Apple product only to have it discounted a few days later?

If you are paying $2000 to $3000 to browse Macrumors you have other issues.

Got my order in right at announce, full specced 15", 2TB, etc. $4299 or so

Me too, but education discount, which paid for the tax.

Yeah, its idiotically overpriced, but quad core i7, 16RAM, 2TB SSD and a decent 4GB video card should last a good four-five years.

Apple has always been expensive. I remember dreaming about the Mac II but knew I could never afford it. Hell, I remember dreaming about the Lisa my teacher had. The difference with these new machines is they are still very expensive but I'm not dreaming about them anymore. They are fairly ordinary compared to other products on the market. I am fine with charging top dollar, but put out the best product on the market. No SD card? This isn't an obsolete media. Mid level memory and graphics. Poorly reviewed keyboard? Let's put it on the whole line up! I have no problem with Apple having the top of the line system at a top of the line price. But these are not their best work. They had more then enough time to present a truly great product. And didn't. On the other end, they have abandoned the entry level customer. The students. These are future customers. All you can do is say, by the old air at the same price. Not even a price reduction for offering outdated tech. I would have been happy with the Air simply updated in new colors. It is for students after all. Show them some love! Not to mention not even a word about iMacs or Mac mini or Mac Pro. What is Apple doing with all its money? The entire point of removing the headphone jack is because Apple has solved wireless (for $$$) with these great new air buds. That are now delayed and don't even have a ship date! Tim should have been on that stage apologizing to his customer for their poor performance. And the actual presentation was the most uninteresting presentation I have ever seen. Tim looked like, well let's just get through this. They would have been better doing a One More Thing at the iPhone event to introduce what was basically one new computer. I knew we were in trouble when he led off with the iPhone at a "hello again" event. Does Tim even know Apple history? This tag line has been reserved for reinventing the company. Not removing the function keys. Sorry for the rant. But I am a fan boy but I can admit when Apple is faltering. Dark days are ahead. Steve help us!

It will be a great computer. It's a laptop. Apple isn't going to reinvent the wheel every 3 years on these. And laptop specsheet wars are meaningless in today's market. Plus, operating systems are priced in these days. It's never truly "free." Windows is hot garbage. Prices will be slashed all over the place by mid-cycle. Apple Stores actually match those deals, too.

I'll reserve decision on "good faith" pricing after teardowns are live.

Reminds me of when I wanted a Rolex watch. Very expensive, almost elusive, but for me it was the ultimate. Years later I got one and realized it was only a watch. We always put things we cant afford on a pedestal, and then we find it was not all that great to begin with.

Have you tried Windows lately? As far as reinventing the wheel, do you realize Apple is releasing products that are a generation or more behind in technology, yet are charging up to twice as much as the competition for lesser hardware that you can't upgrade?

Based on all of these comments, I'm beginning to see why Apple doesn't bow to customer opinion. Most customers are whiners.

The iPhone 7 if Apple was a democracy:

I have mixed emotions on the update. On one hand, I can understand Apple's mentality to update the price points fairly significantly. Apple has always been a premium laptop brand, and I think they are making a statement with these prices since they now offer what appears to be a genuine innovation that no competitor can offer. It can be imitated but not with the level of integration which Apple's OS and hardware, being under one roof, allow for. I also think it's sort of about making the Mac a status symbol again as in recent memory many Mac prices have dropped below the 1k threshold that they stayed north of for so many years. It's also worth noting that they will, as others said, pass along some of the costs of development to early adopters as these prices will clearly fall, to some degree, in the next couple of years.

I do think some of the decisions are quite greedy; including 256gb as an option at all for a $2300 15 inch Pro machine, and still charging very premium prices for flash storage upgrades when prices have fallen so significantly over the last few years. I understand they're incredibly fast/high-quality SSDs, however the prices are a bit outrageous considering you're upgrading from a 256gb SSD to start with.

Overall, I'll be looking to pickup a 15-inch in the relatively near future. I'm not disappointed by the innovation at all, but am a little let down that I will be paying SO much money for a machine that can be similarly specced from a top-notch competitor (Dell XPS) for like literally $1000 less. Seriously though, I am every bit convinced that the Touch Bar will be fantastic and will only improve over the next couple of years. Can't wait for 1password integration :)

Theres a few weird things about the product line...

There is a new non-Toolbar 13" model but no new non-Toolbar 15" model.
There is no 15" model without a built video card?

I wouldn't mind a new non-Toolbar 15" model with integrated graphics...or a quad core i7 13" non-toolbar....

Clearly these things suck and no one is buying them.

To the people who are saying they only make a limited amount and then are always backordered. Maybe, just maybe they wanted to be sure these would sell decently before going full blown absolute mass production. I don't know if anyone realizes but to build a computer cost a lot more than a phone.

The new non-toolbar 13" is essentially a new Macbook Air in the new MacBook Pro casing and with retina and it uses the same 15w SKU that Macbook Airs traditionally do.

The "toolbar" models are continuations of the the prior MacBook Pros. The 13 inch uses the 28w SKU and the 15-inch the 45w quad core SKU.

The reason there's no iGPU only option for the 15" is Apple pre-emptively tooling for Kaby Lake next year. When the 45w Kaby Lake SKU is released it's already known that Intel won't offer Iris Pro Integrated graphics (they are on Skylake but like I said, preemptive).

It is a bit of a rejig of the product line.

My MacBook was stolen 2 weeks ago, (apart from the fact 'find my phone' hasn't popped up showing me where it is)... My Insurance replaced with latest 2015 model.. I was thinking about selling this and upgrading to the latest with the touch bar but $700 price hike in Australia is ridiculous. Why would I upgrade? The old model was over priced @$3500 now $4249 for a laptop... Your off the planet Apple...

lol I know what you mean I'm looking at a pretty good used Hilux for $4300
Seems to be about the same price as a Microsoft Surface Book with a similar processor and memory, so I don't really think the price is out of line. Apple has never been know as being the budget priced machine.

I don't know how they say inflation is only 2%, god dam potatoes are $4/kg now, rates went up 10% this year, crazy. Welcome to the third world currency lol

Ordered quickly, thankfully.

Apple is going to be backordered for a lot of time.
For a moment it said "available in store November 8" for the 13" with touch bar. Will be interesting to see if that holds up.

To be honest the 12 MacBooks slipped in shipping real fast. Don't forget the whole shipping times in controlled by apple to give us the illusion of popular.

Most people i know who have waited are looking at the previous model now and voting with thier wallets, it's cheaper to get last years model discounted and setup a egpu
