As a former flight simulator enthusiast this is the cooler thing ever :) How do you find out that sort of information (like what flight would contain your computer)?

Simple. Match up your departure scan to the flights leaving, hit up FlightAware or FlightRadar24 to track your flight. If the airport is covered by LiveATC, you could even listen to ATC as the flight containing your Mac leaves.

This will definitely come in handy during iPhone launches.

Yep. This has worked perfectly since the iPhone 3G, to the point of MR running a story on FlightAware on it in the main section.

Exactly. To take it one step further, the way tracking for package carriers work is that your shipment is "batched" with other shipments. First it is put in an air cargo container and scanned as it is put in. Then that air cargo container is scanned and the records of all the individual packages are updated. The cargo container is then put on an airplane scanned so it is and associated with that airplane. The individual package records are again updated. What you see as a consumer is a fraction of the package scans that exist in a carrier's system. If you have internal access to their tracking you can see a whole different level of detail.

Each carrier uses a different qualifying event to show the "departed" scan from an airport/facility. In some cases it is correlated to the parking brake on the aircraft being turned off (incidentally, that's usually how flight crews are paid, at least at the airline I used to work at - pilots and flight attendants were paid from parking brake off to parking brake on). In others, it is tied to the aircraft actually being in the air or another event that the aircraft transmits via a system called ACARS. Regardless, the timestamps associated with that departure scan are pretty close to the actual pushback or takeoff times of a flight that can be identified on a tool like FlightAware.

I used to work at both a passenger airline and I also spent two years working at a retail job associated with a package carrier when I was in college (think 'The UPS Store' but it wasn't that). I've since moved into a different sector of the transportation industry but nonetheless I find this type of stuff very interesting.

As an aside, the exception to the above is USPS tracking - those scans are typically not tied to movement of a vehicle like a truck or an airplane, but that's a bit beyond the scope of this discussion.

Departed from Facility: Anchorage, AK, United States -- @TheYayAreaLiving

Looks like we've just departed from Anchorage on our way to the WorldPort! Woot!!! Looks like this confirms it's on UPS109.

Woo hoo! Happy and safe travels friend. Looks like traveling is going smooth for ya’ll. Can’t wait till you land in KY. I wonder if your going to hit get with import scan tomorrow.

Still "preparing to ship" without tracking info, but "Arrives Tue 26 Oct." Canada.

There's still time for that. Keep in mind that the flight will gain a day flying the great circle route, as it crosses the IDL. If it flies out within the next couple of hours it could still make Tuesday. If it doesn't leave by, say, Sunday at 12 noon PT, it will miss Tuesday.

Any predictions on if we’re going to see our shipment labels? If so when can we expect it?

I would think you'd have to see labels tonight unless they truly are in the United States already. Was yours a BTO or a stock model? Have you seen any movement on your polishing cloth yet either? Mine still is "processing" with an Oct 26 date.

If they are already in the US then you would have not only seen tracking numbers but would have been able to track the flight. Seeing that you don't have that yet tells me that they are not in the US. Seeing that at the time of this post it is 7:45am in Shanghai, if you don't see movement by noon PT Sunday, it may not make that date. You're having to keep up with the initial scan by Apple, as well as the arriving scan by UPS to get the tracking number, let alone a departure scan from UPS for it to get on a flight. Not all of that will be real time.

figuring out the precise dose of coma inducing drugs necessary to stay asleep until Tuesday. My current MBP keyboard has gotten worse with double pressing, missed presses, etc. over the past year. It's actually a pain in the ass to even type slack messages now.

It’s a stock model. No moment on any of the accessories either. I feel like everything will be overnighted :(

Lucky! I can’t even go to sleep. 🤦‍♀️

Netflix and binge....that will put you right to bed...at some point, all of the plotlines in the various Netflix shows that you are watching will all become a blur and you will fall asleep...

Or if you want a more healthy solution - https://www.calm.com/

That is normal until they are scanned in Louisville. Once they get their scan in KY, Apple will update the order status to Shipped.
Apologies for I think I am wrong on this, but, are those currently on the Anchorage express still showing PTS on your orders and you just found your tracking into on UPS a different way?

Might my MBP be partying with the rest of yours? Is it time for me to start hyper watching a plane?? 😃

I'm in a similar boat. My late-2013 MBP has had a trackpad issue for the last two years. I've just taken to using a mouse with it. However, a month ago the battery finally died. That caused the system performance to nosedive for whatever reason, to the point where it was so slow I really couldn't be productive on it. I've been using a combination of a 2015 Windows desktop PC and my 2018 MacBook Air with base specs to get by until my new MBP arrives.

If you have a UPS My choice account, it'll show up in there.

Yes, mine is still showing PTS and is on the flight from Anchorage according to UPS. I found my tracking through UPS MyChoice.

I have ordered 16", 16GB, 1TB, M1X Pro with an expected delivery date of Oct 26.

My CC has been charged.

But, neither Apple website nor MyUPS show any entry. Kind of anxious and worried now, if I will receive it on Tuesday Oct 26 or not.
