Order just got delayed

UK
MBP 16” M1 Max 10/32 64Gb 1TB
Ordered 24th March
Original delivery 28 Apr - 6 May (4-5 weeks)
Just updated today 29th April
New dellvery estimate 20 Jun - 1 Jul (puts it at 13-14 weeks total, 8-9 form today)

Refurb can't be traded in right?
Yes it can, at least I did have the option to trade-in a refurb MBP 13" M1 purchased early June 2021 for a new MBP 14", at the end I didn't cause my GF kept it.

Just checked again the serial number and yes, it's eligible for trade-in with a 800 EUR value. Original refurb cost: 1609 EUR (512GB SSD/16GB RAM)

edit: dates adjustment

Call me cynical but I'm starting to wonder if the bigger supply issue is with SSD chips? Apple can sell 4-8 1Tb or 2Tb machines instead of one 8Tb machine using the same memory chips. Lots of the delays seem to be to those specifying large SSDs.

So my story/shenanigans goes like this:

05 Jan - ordered 14" SG 32GB/1TB M1 Max 24-core - scheduled for delivery 24 Feb - 09 Mar (subsequently cancelled)
21 Jan - re-ordered 14" SG 32GB/1TB M1 Max 24-core with discount - scheduled for delivery 14-26 Mar
07 Mar - shipment notice received and funds drawn from bank
11 Mar - delivery attempt - missed by minutes, walking the dog. Walked past UPS van round corner from home. Got in, saw missed delivery card, legged it back round corner, van gone :( Cue disappointed w/e
14 Mar - delivery attempt 2 - out walking dog again. Spotted UPS van up far end of street. Walked up, with dog, and asked delivery guy who handed me new laptop :) Walked home, short walk for dog ;) But delivered on the earliest date estimated.

Enjoyed playing with 14" until 21 Mar. Fantastic little machine, eminently portable, fans spin up audibly now and then but otherwise smooth as glass. But as portability is less a need now I decided 16" with better thermals, speakers etc for minimal extra was a better long-term prospect.

21 Mar - returned 14" to local Apple Store
22 Mar - ordered 16" SL 32GB/1TB M1 Max 24-core - scheduled for delivery 26 Apr - 04 May
23 Mar - bank credited for 14"
06 Apr - 16" SL 32GB/1TB M1 Max 32-core available on Apple Refurb but passed over given 24-core due in a matter or weeks. Would have been delivered 07 Apr (oh! hindsight!)
26 Apr - contacted Apple to check status as no draw down had occurred. Advised that 'device is about to start preparing for shipment so within the next days you should see the status changing to preparing or shipment and this is also when the authorisation will be granted for this order'. '4th of May is the latest possible delivery date, however the exact delivery dare will be stated on the dispatch e-mail you will receive upon shipping'.
27 Apr - (the very next day) email/text received advising change to delivery date - now scheduled 16 Jun - 29 Jun! :(
29 Apr - as backlog of encoding projects shelved in anticipation of new laptop reaches critical mass a 16" SL M1 Pro base 16GB/1TB/16-core is ordered for collection from local Apple Store. Collected from store as is, no discount.
03 May - Bank shows draw down authorisation for 16" 32GB/1TB/24-core! So now I have two MacBook Pros on my card.

I know that Quanta, who produce the MBP line, were shutdown from 12/13 April due to Covid lockdown and that they have just recently resumed operations in closed-loop operations as of 18 Apr with 5% of workforce, with plans to triple that by 22 Apr which should, conservatively, enable 30% levels of pre-lockdown output. All that combined with recent riots etc I’m sure are having major impact on shipping/order backlog.

I am sympathetic to the workers’ plight in China but I wonder whether it might be that my order could have been one on the cusp of dispatch prior to the shutdown, given it was placed 22 Mar, and is now at the mercy of clogged shipping lanes? Here's hoping it arrives before I need to return the 16" base (on 13th May) which, while awesome, has managed to get me through a good percentage of my projects backlog. Having the dual encoders in the M1 Max would have potentially halved the time spent so far but hey-ho, it is what it is and just my luck to order a game-changer in the midst of all this global catastrophe.

My fingers are crossed. May the 4th could be just the thing this Jedi needs ;)

[UPDATE]
10 May - still no update tho’ pending charge is still showing on my card.
11 May - authorisation charge vanished, no update from Apple 🙁
12 May - contacted Apple to make appointment to return 16” base. They have extended my period until 29 May but it will have to be arranged for collection before then as I am no longer able to return via retail (the local Apple Store from where it was picked up).
14 May - Card authorised again! Status changed to ‘Preparing to ship’ 😀
16 May - Dispatch Notification - delivers 23/5/2022 - Whohoo! UPS shipment tracking ETA 19/5/2022 - Label created.
18 May - Invoice received. UPS shows Origin, Export and In Transit scans.
19 May - Departed from Shanghai, CN 07:11, arrived Incheon, KR 09:45. Departed Incheon, KR 12:30. Arrived Koeln, DE 18:29
20 May - Departed Koeln, DE 05:07, arrived Stanford Le Hope, UK 16:07.
21 May - Departed Stanford Le Hope, UK 03:29, arrived Norwich, UK 05:53.
23 May - 10:37 - Walking dog up to end of street. See UPS van pull up and stop on the main road. Divert back towards home and hover in doorway. Intercept UPS delivery guy who hands off what looks suspiciously like a MacBook Pro size box. MBP delivered!! Yay! 🤪
24 May - My birthday - thank you Apple for that wonderful present for which I paid a small fortune 😉 Well thanks for getting it here in time for my birthday. 😘

The base 16 is on the left. My 32GB/24-core/1TB is on the right. I've added a Textured Matt Black trackpad cover from Xtremeskins (https://www.xtremeskins.co.uk/products/macbook-pro-16-2021-m1-skins?variant=39497056452671). What do you think? I had hoped it would be akin to the Black/Silver Magic Trackpad but it has a rough texture as opposed to the smooth of the Magic Trackpad. Which do you prefer? Black trackpad or clear? Let me know.

So my 16" MBP M1 Max that I got on launch day was stolen back on 3/31. I was able to track it, but the police stated they won't make a recovery attempt. Early April I randomly checked to see if any stores nearby had my config in stock, and a bunch of them did. So I thought supply wouldn't be an issue, and I didn't want to buy it before the home owner's insurance verified they will cover my losses. A week or so later I checked again, and they were all sold out everywhere nearby, with the shipping date into June. I was like wtf.

I finally placed an order for one back on 4/18, and it stated estimated delivery in mid June. Lo and behold, I somehow received it on 4/27. Super lucky.

Ordered today a 14" M1 Pro (32GB RAM, 2TB SSD) and it is showing a delivery date of between July 6th and July 20th.

So that'll be 2 months from today, if it doesn't slip. Is there any point in hoping it might come sooner now the factories are back up and running as of this week I wonder?

I hate to disappoint you, but it's going to slip. Shanghai is still in a quasi-lockdown, and with what is happening in iPhone City Zhenzhou and how people building Macs there are essentially locked in the facility due to how hard a lockdown China is doing for COVID, dates are definitely going to slip, especially for Macs and iPhone orders.

Things are NOT looking good over there.

At this point, it may be faster for you to fly to Bali, then swim to Zhenzhou to pick up your Mac yourself.. :(

If you're getting that much of a delay, and you're closer to China than we are, then we in the US could only imagine what delays we're going to have.

I've been debating getting one (see my other thread), and I've checked daily at apple.com. Everything is pushed out to mid to late July. Yet when I checked this morning they had the base 16" M1 Pro available for pick up.

I have to believe this is a mistake, BUT I don't want take a chance. It wasn't one store showing availability but my local stores. I'm hoping its not a inventory glitch. I placed the order and I'll find out about lunch hour, as that's the time I scheduled for pick up

Base models are okay, because the bulk of them have already been shipped to a warehouse in the US that will be for the supply here. The physical stores will pull from that stock if they don’t have anything in the stores for that.

It’s only if you are doing something BTO where you may get delays because they have to be built, which they are in Zhenzhou, Shenzhen, and Shanghai.

Maybe there should be a lesson for Apple here. Imagine if we could buy a base model and upgrade storage and RAM ourselves instead of waiting 6 months for a BTO.

You’d still be waiting for the components because they would have to be built, plus cause a redesign of the motherboard so they aren’t soldered into it anymore. You’d be sacrificing the performance potential for convenience.

My MBP 16 (32 Max / 64Gb / 8TB - ordered 20th March) has strangely moved to Preparing to Ship at exactly the same time as my separate ASD (VESA) order.

March 16th order of 16 inch m1 max with 64gb ram and 1tb ssd had originally delivery date as may 22nd-29th. Around may 15th I got the push from June 7th-22nd. Looked earlier today and it was processing but it has officially switched to preparing to ship. I’m so excited. The wait has been terrible. But
I had to pull myself together. My kids are watching and I’m always telling them you need some patience but I can’t take my own advice!!!

Looks like some dates are getting pushed as far back as the first week of August.

On March 20 ordered 16" M1 Max 24 core 32 GB RAM 512 GB SSD.
Original delivery date: April 28 - May 5. April 27 came, dated got pushed to mid June.
I cancelled.
On April 28 ordered same config but with 64 GB RAM instead. Delivery date is: June 15 - 29.
Wondering if I had kept the first order if I also would have switched to "preparing to ship".
Pushed myself a month behind in line by cancelling.
B&H photo has had plenty stock come & go, but with Apple Education store pricing & Apple Card monthly payment, I rather wait & take the delays & go directly thru Apple.
Plus B&H photo has no return policy once opened.

Hope it doesn't get worse, because it is looking like it is.

It's not getting worse really - two weeks ago they were the second week of July.

I've got an order from early May and have been checking in a ghost cart every few days and the shipping dates are moving in line with regular days passing.

Compared to earlier this year, that definitely is worse.

Looking back at my order, I ordered my Mac on March 1st (BTO: 16" 10/16/16, 16GB, 2TB). I received it within 3 weeks, on March 25th, and that was long, seeing that people who ordered BTOs before me were getting theirs within 14 days. so 24 days 2 months ago, to 56-64 days now is a stretch that is getting worse. Again, this isn't Apple's fault, as both Shanghai and Shenzhen have had massive COVID lockdowns, but the order-to-shipping times are definitely getting worse.

Maybe to much earlier this year, but I think the peak of the issues occurred just before the time the factory riot happened which was the very start of May. At this time IIRC at least where I live it was quoting 8-10 weeks for a MacBook Pro or Studio Display.

Back in mid-April, custom MBPs were delayed until late May/early June because of the China lockdown (and I think orders placed then will have been revised back to July by Apple after order when they did the mass date changes).

Production has resumed, albeit not at full capacity, where before I think it was pretty much at a standstill. On Reddit, a lot of users are getting their machines now from February and March, many of them are getting them earlier than the delayed Apple date.

I think you were extremely lucky to get your BTO machine from March 1st in 3 weeks. I've read about people who are still waiting on their order from February as of this week. As you said though it's a mess and there's obviously a big backlog from when production was (at least dramatically, if not fully) halted at Quanta, the riot probably didn't help.

But I think now Apple is under promising and overdelivering with their estimated dates, rather than the reverse (true of Feb/Mar/Apr). At some point in late April/early May Apple delayed nearly a load of existing orders and pushed back new order estimates, but I'm seeing report after report of people receiving shipments ahead of these revised estimates now, in some cases a month or more earlier. This is why I think things aren't getting worse.

Update:

M1 Max/64GB/8TB
  • Ordered: Feb 25
  • Scheduled: April 17-23
  • Pushed: May 8-15
  • Pushed: Jun 27 - Jul 8
  • Shipped: Yesterday (!)
So there are some rays of hope. I was pessimistic that they would even keep the Jun 27 - Jul 8 window after following the turmoil in China.

Oh no doubt that the riot at Shenzhen didn't help, and the 4-week rolling quadrant lockdown that turned into 9 weeks didn't help at all..

Back in mid-April, custom MBPs were delayed until late May/early June because of the China lockdown (and I think orders placed then will have been revised back to July by Apple after order when they did the mass date changes).

Yep. That was the rolling lockdown that was reported. They split the rolling lockdown into 4 quadrants, where a given quadrant was supposed to have been given 4 weeks, but turned into 9. It didn't help that the factory was in one quadrant, the distro centers were in a second, and the airport in a third, so depending on order that would have been 12 weeks.

Production has resumed, albeit not at full capacity, where before I think it was pretty much at a standstill. On Reddit, a lot of users are getting their machines now from February and March, many of them are getting them earlier than the delayed Apple date.

The funny thing is that before I placed my order, I had been following this thread and the estimated times that Apple was saying as you place an order without hitting the button to check out. All of those for the configuration I was looking at was stating 3 weeks, so they actually lived up to it. Well, to a single exception: the Apple cloth arrived within 2 days. ?

Hopefully the dates improve, but at this point, I would say that it would be a better idea to not only wait until WWDC to see if anything possibly gets announced, but as we're 5 months away from the rumoured next release, it would be better to wait altogether.
