What size screen MacBook Pro (2021) did you order?

Just joined to join in on this joint right here. Good to meet ya kids!

16" was my vote. Hoping for 32gb/1 TB from the jump. This will be my first Mac. Go easy on me 😉. I am done with Windows & PCs. Although I will admit these new Framework laptops turned my head. Hoping their thing catches on in the other side.

To repeat a question from like pg 2 that I think went unanswered - does anyone know whether the education discount will be applicable to these new MBPs???

Also, is it best to pre-order on the website or line up at a store? Anybody got covid era experience with the rush from last year? I have been desperate for these things, miraculously holding my flow together with spit/paste/tape and swallowing the stress. Been saying "just a little longer... " for a year or so now. About to bridge the gap by pulling maneuvers, working the system. The m1x pros coming out this year will literally be a life changing event for me. I am not being dramatic nor exaggerating. I am so looking forward to moving on the next step. Please, please, please announce soon, Apple!! 🙏

There is a separate education site version of the online Apple Store and you'd buy it there. We used the education discount as homeschoolers and when our kids were in college.

Your configuration is likely a build-to-order as I don't think that your configuration will be sold as a standard configuration in the stores so you would likely have to order it from the online store. Lots of people here have ordered M1 systems - there are threads in the Apple Silicon forum about ordering, receiving, setting up, etc. One of the threads is about 170 pages.

I ordered a BTO mini which came from China and also ordered a 16G/1TB Air. Ordered it at 7 AM and it was at our house by noon. That was one of the few standard configurations which the stores carry.

Whoa, ok. Thank you for all the advice and tips! I wanna be prepared for the melee!

I think Apple would be making a mistake with legacy ports and hope those rumors are wrong. The main thing is I remember how much the Ethernet and to a lesser extent FW800 ports weakened the case of pre-Retina unibody MacBook Pro models. The cases are thinner enough today that such a thing could happen even with standard USB and HDMI outlets. I'm definitely a fan of the skinnier USB-C port, with one exception -- Apple's implementation of it seems to be prone to getting jammed with dirt that I occasionally have to dig out.

If they do go with these older and fatter ports I hope they're much more mindful of this with the case design than in the past. Either way I don't have much of a choice; I don't think sticking with Intel is viable for my organization's equipment budget as I really need more than three years out of this one.

One other thing; charging with USB-C is incredibly convenient and I hope that remains possible even if they return to MagSafe. And if they return to MagSafe? I really hope it's compatible with the Retina power supply....and that the cable is removable from the power supply so that it can be paired with a standard USB-C power supply.

USB-C is thinner in all 3 dimensions (width, length, height), but if they still include the 3.5m audio jack, it could possibly have a spot, just baed on the thickness of the Mac. If they included Ethernet, the Mac would obviously be much thicker, and as such, weigh more. If they did that, they would be going back on years of development on the frame of the Mac, as previous generations would be considerably lighter.

The other problem is that Magsafe would burn a port. If the 16" MBP (going off of my wife's 2019 Intel) has 4 USB-C ports, you'd lose one just for charging outright, which would also garner complaints. And unless Apple has some new technology up their sleeve that could have passthrough USB-C with MagSafe, I don't see how MagSafe could be a viable option in any model.

I got a 16" during lockdown, so about 1,5 years ago. Overspec'd it completely (64GB/2TB) because I expected to be using VMs much more than I actually do. And now the need for VMs has completely gone. It's my (work-from-)home machine. Because I find it rather too heavy, I don't carry it to work. But I do like the 16" screen real estate.

At work, I got myself an M1 16/512 mini. Disadvantage - I can't take it to meetings. Advantage - as a test unit to try out M1, it's been great. As a consequence, all management laptops are now MBA M1 with the same spec. I'm going to run a trial with our graphic designer and my mini to see if it works for him. Very curious about that.

As for myself, I voted undecided. On the one hand, a 14" with less powerful GPU and lower weight is very appealing. I'd go for 32/1-2TB this time around. On the other hand, Monterey seems to fix the main issue with my 16" - fans ramping up when just using an external screen. If the new low power mode eliminates that and the machine stays quiet while using Logic, I can see myself staying with the 16". Except if the 14" is really cheap and I can get it for around the same money as I'll get selling my 16", that would be the final straw...

BTW, I got a tiny USB stick for my previous MBP (13" late 2013) to increase storage. While it wasn't very noticeable, it was pretty slow. Fast sticks are pretty big, small sticks are slow. So it was OK to offload some data, but unusable for serious stuff in practice. I'm considering an external SSD for at home, but a large internal SSD still has its advantages, if you can afford it.

If not today then we’re getting an event by end of this month. Apple has been so tight about everything lately. 1 more hour to go. We will find out. Hang tight!

Can’t see an event now until the 26th… though would reallllly love one sooner!

Would apple do an event on the same day Google launching the pixel 6? I don’t think so, so maybe we’ll get invites out on the 19th

Sounds like the event will be by the end of the month with maybe a release date on 1st week of November…

The waiting continues… ⏰

9to5 Mac has posted a very good article about the launch date.

Just saw that as well. I think the bigger reason why they aren't ready for an event let alone release yet is because Monterrey isn't ready yet. They wouldn't ship any new Macs out until the beta testing is done and they've had time to stabilize the OS in time for release, as it would be going onto every Mac shipped.

So I'd think that the holdup right now isn't hardware, but instead is software.

I am running Beta 8 for office stuff and did a Beta 9 install this morning but I haven't played around with it. I would say that it still has some problems and it appears to be missing a few features.

That’s a good point. Wait, what # beta are we on?

As of today, Beta 9, and it's a public beta.

This pretty much would confirm it. The holdup is Monterrey, not hardware, and Apple is smart to not rush an event now because of what the rumor mill thinks should happen.

while that sounds like a valid reason -- looking at the buggy mess that is ios/ipados15 that was released and shipped on all new iphones/ipads and the noticable decline in apple's software quality in the past few years, i'm not entirely convinced.

The difference here though is that iOS 15 and iPadOS15 hit gold master and was shipped. Monterrey has not, as it is still in beta. If it hit gold master, then a release and launch of new hardware would be imminent.

Apple only needed 10 days between iOS 15 RC and iPhone launch day, and those units must be at least tenfold of what they need to flash on the MacBooks. It seems they can swiftly figure those logistics out. I wouldn’t be surprised if the RC for Monterey was released the day of the event with the MacBooks shipping the Friday of the following week.
