It's about time.
I can't imagine them making it thinner unless they remove the superdrive. I actually use mine, so I'm glad I have my MBP how it is.

Every MBP owner I know has had their SuperDrive fail on them already, so I'm not sure removing it would make a lot of difference to functionality! Both of mine failed too; the three year AppleCare runs out on my second MBP at the end of next month, so I'm debating getting it fixed while I can. (It means being without my main laptop for a week while they fix it, as well as two hours travel to get to the Apple Store; probably not really worth it.)

The external drive I bought when the first MBP drive died hasn't been used for more than a year anyway; I did rip an audio CD on my Mac Mini last month, and tried to burn a CD-R on it, but failed (ended up burning it on the PC instead, which worked fine).

My guess would be for "HDD/SSD/optical, pick two", and I certainly wouldn't miss the optical drive: I'd be much happier using the external drive the rare times I need one, and an SSD would be nice for performance if the price is sane. There are already retrofit kits for this as an upgrade

Wirelessly posted (iPod touch 2nd gen: Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; fr-fr) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

How surprising... just as much as the rumor that said that the iPad 2 will be thinner, lighter and more powerful -_-'

This is getting ridiculous. Let me start a rumor:

"The next iteration of [Apple product] will be an improved version of the current one!"

Yeah and Apple will once again market it as "The most advanced/powerful/fastest [insert Apple product here] yet!"

Still waiting for them to release a weaker/slower/less advanced product than the one before.

Nevertheless, really excited about the new mbp upgrade! Can't wait!

My wife's 13" got watered about a month ago by some t**t at her work. Insurance gave her the cheque a few weeks back and I've been telling her to hold on. She's nearly gone to the Apple store and bought a replacement one a few times as she really needs it and keeps having to use mine. After trying to explain a few times about i5's/i7's and point out how old the C2D's are, and showing her rumours, she's now happy to wait.

This is very helpful news in stopping her impatience though, and she's now happy to wait (although rather inconvienient).

Sorry, but if you need a notebook, you should buy it. I'm guessing that most of the slight improvements the new MBP has, have no impact on the usability for your wife's daily use.

Two internal hard drive is convenient for Time Machine, just like the Mac mini Server. I guess the reason to keep the ODD on 13 inch is to keep it away from 13'' MacBook Air's market

Backup helps in three situations: User stupidity (you delete a file, you get it back through Time Machine), hardware failure (your drive crashes, you restore from Time Machine), and theft or destruction of the complete computer (your MacBook is stolen, you buy a new one and restore from Time Machine). Time Machine on a second internal drive takes away one of the three protections, especially with a portable computer that may leave your home.

Still hundred times better than no backup, obviously.

I think Apple should focus on using higher quality materials rather than adding features and making the machine slimmer. After two years of use, my late 2008 MBP has a swollen battery, a dysfunctional superdrive, a failing graphics chip, a trackpad that won't click, and a left fan that isn't spinning.

This should be a Snow Leopard-style update for Hardware: don't change anything, but instead, use better parts that won't melt after a few months of use. This is a "Pro" system after all, the focus should be on performance and quality, and not on making it so slim that you can't fit proper components inside.

64gb Blade SSD (BTO 128gb SSD) for the OS and Apps with dual 500 GB HDD and I'll be HAPPY. :]

I think this will be the year I pull the trigger on a nice MacBook Pro. Every time they refresh / redesign them I get tempted, but always talk myself out of it because of the price or the fact I know it will be refreshed again usually in less than a year.

I have a big problem with purchasing something and feeling that it's outdated shortly thereafter, but I guess I can't live in fear forever.

Make way, I'll be a mac convert soon.

i hate to be the one to break this to you, but the macbook pro thats about to be released will be expensive and will be superseded by a newer version sometime in the next year.

I disagree. I believe this will be the last MacBook Pro refresh before the product line is discontinued.

Well, once they "upgraded" the 160GB iPod Classic and released a 120GB model (it's the model I bought, unknowingly...). And then in the next year they improved the iPod Classic to 160GB once again. Isn't it amazing?

But anyway, I can't wait to buy a NEW MBP, it's been almost one year since the last update! Hurry up already!

Additional enhancements meaning keeping up with the PC Joneses. Glad to see they're refreshing to keep up with what's going on currently in the industry. While they're no longer leaders outside of their iStuff entertainment line, they're at least keeping it going! :D

9to5mac reported the SuperDrive would be optional, which I'd def. be okay with. I'd get mine with-- while I don't use it too often, it's really inconvenient to not have one when I need it.

I don't use a DVD since years, an external drive would be perfect. Optical drive are big, take too much space inside computer, they're slow and broke easily. Better cpu and gpu, more battery is better than optical drive.

I have the old 15" MBP with express slot and have been happy with it. I don't see myself getting a new notebook anytime in the near future. Not only has my iPad taken over a lot of its uses I am more interested in seeing the new iPads than MBPs.

I don't think SSD with HDD will be good combination . Because when you try to open itunes who's music library on HDD it would get become slow . I think 256 GB SSD will be standard for base model .:D

That seems unlikely, but we can hope. We should definitely see this when IvyBridge begins to be used.

There are very few devices out there that supports USB3 . Lightpeak would be future proof its wholla faster . I have read that fibre optic have infinite speed lol future proof :D

While there aren't that many devices supporting USB 3.0 out there yet, the number is increasing and will continue to grow.

I do agree though that light peak is definitely way faster and more future proof.

Optical

(Just to put my cards on the table I use the optical drive about once every couple of years when I upgrade the o.s. External optical drives are cheap. So I'd be happy w/o one.) Not sure how an optical drive can be build-to-order - either there's a big hole in the side of the chassis where you slide the dvd in or there isn't.
