How long before the problem first manifested itself? Did you move data over from an existing machine before the problem started occurring?

If it was straight out of the box then you need to be a little angry as that is a rudimentary check that should have been done before dispatch.

If, on the other hand it was after a data transfer then it maybe a software issue that others will stumble across and if possible, I would like to see if we can get to the bottom of it on this forum so as to ensure that others can take preventive measures in future.

Sorry to use you as a guinea pig ;)

thanks. well, it happened lets say about 3 hrs after i transfered all my data from my ibook. It happened a little while after I disconnect the power "brick". I was probably 75% charged when it happened three times. They keyboard light went out for a while as well. It hasn't done it in the past hour though... I had almost thought it was just crap for battery life but it was still in the 70s range...It would make a large rattle noise and everything went black all three times. Then I would push power and I had to go through the apple gray startup screen...(not like it took that long). It definitely wasnt in sleep mode bc i was typing each time it happened.

The rattle noise makes it sound like a hardware issue.. anyone else got any thoughts. I'd call Apple if I were you. It may end up be a periodic issue that results in total failure in the future and if that happens outside of your warranty you're going to be a very unhappy user.

I'm giving them a call, I agree. Good thing i live about 8 min from an Apple store. Lets just hope I'm going in to buy accessories only, lol.

Yeah, i was freaked out. I waited so long....maybe i should get applecare again, geesh

THANKS BY THE WAY FOR THE ADVICE ;)

FWIW, I've heard this on other Centrino laptops. For lack of a better phrase, it's "processor buzz" similar to (but less annoying than) the G5 "chirp" issue.

---john

When you say the G5 chirp issue, are you referring to the iMac G5 Rev A's? I had a 1.8 Ghz Rev A with Superdrive and the noise coming out of that machine drove me bats! The problem was not so much the noise level, but rather the variation of the noise, it sounded like someone was hoovering next door - because it increased/decreased in pitch and tone when using the processor to various degrees.

After plently of forum searching I detemined that the noise came from the looseness in the bearings with the Rev A fans - the fans vibrated as they spun, creating a highly irritating variable buzz. I owned an eMac before this, which also made a fair amount of noise, but this was a normal (steady, hence non-irritating) fan whir. As a rule, the more demanding the programme running, the higher and more schizophenic the whine became. I produce music with Macs, so this was a real issue ... in the end, I ebayed it!

Did/does any new MBP owners experience this problem with the Rev A G5 iMac? If so, how do the two noises compare? If it is a real issue I may be tempted to go Intel iMac (apparently the noise has now been contained, probably bec they installed decent fans!).

Cheers Dave

1.83's now shipping!!!

This morning I woke up to some great news. The 1.83 MBP's are shipping (well at least mine anyways). I ordered mine 1/10 at 7:23pm PST.

Huh, I ordered mine 1/10 at 11:57 AM PST and still haven't shipped. Which shipping method did you choose?

Well, it looks like my order can't be cancelled, so it's getting ready to head out. I selected 2 day shipping so if it makes it out today I'll have it Friday!

Someone cracked open and took pictures of their MacBook Pro.

hmmm, so it doesn't look like it has the off-centre third mid-range speaker anymore, which I guess means the left-biased stereo image is now a thing of the past. Cool.

I ordered on Jan 10th, 5 minutes after the store opened again, a stock machine, then changed it to a 100 GB 5400 RPM HDD 1.67/now 1.83, and it shipped this morning! Ordered 2-day shipping, does FedEx IP Direct shipping deliver on Saturdays? How long did it take you 2.0 MBP US Midwest guys' laptops to arrive if you had 2 day shipping? Let me know, thanks!

It doesn't matter if you have 2-day shipping w/ International Shipments. they are all sent the same way regardless whether you have ground or 2 day. Either way, you will recieve it in 2 days.

Thanks John for your reply...The powerbook G4s are really quite hot already and I find it quite annoying but if the macbook pros are even hotter, thast quite disturbing, plus the whining issue is really bad news as I needed this MBP for my mobile studio to mix and compose on...

Argh, I guess I have to wait for Rev Bs....

While waiting for a Rev B (hurry up, Apple!) is a great idea, I don't think you have to worry too much about the "whine" and audio apps. I used to use lots of Dell products (bought a new laptop about every 14-18 months) and most of them exhibited the "whine," but none of the whine found its way into any music I rendered (even through the computer's line-in ports and what not.

Of course, the fan bug (where, when the fans would come on and the computer would hitch for just a second - long enough to drop whatever frames were being rendered at that point) was an more bothersome issue, and I'm glad I don't have it on my 17" PB G4.

Having cracked open many a PowerBook myself, I must say that it's nice to see that they've kept the inside just as sexy as the outside. So much better than how Dell puts their machines together.

As far as real world testing... I calibrated my battery last night. I didn't leave it off/sleeping for 5 full hours, only for 3 since I needed to go to bed and wanted it to charge. It was fully charged this morning and I've been using it as follows:

-wireless turned off (no wireless at this client, so no need for it to be on.
-general surfing/mail/chat/one or two runs of xbench, etc.
-screen brightness to 3 bars.

As of this minute, it's been running for 1:08* with 1:41 left on the clock.

I will keep you posted.

Any idea how long it takes to ship to the UK???

Presumably longer since it has to go through the European distribution hub ...:(

Mines currently in Amsterdam, heading to London. Got there at 11:06 this morning, and I'm hoping its going to be flown over, then I may receive it tomorrow as I have a local hub 2 mins from my house.

I doubt this as another use pointed out that their shipment travelled through france before being routed our way.

1.83's shipping soon!

I ordered on Jan 16th, 8:28am. My apple store order still has the cancel link available, but my credit card finally was charged this morning. Hopefully I'll see an update from Apple soon.

We all have the cancel link, but if you actually click cancel, the website will notify you that you are unable to cancel, and that you have to call for more details to speak with a CSR.

My 2.0 was shipped on the 18th (Sat). It was in Holland yesterday and arrived in London this morning at around 5am. I was delivered in the afternoon. Pretty good!

It could matter once it enters the country though. It depends. They have to fly it in, but once it is in one of the big centers and cleared through customs, they could sent it via plane or truck to your local center.

Request for more battery testing

I have studied the battery life issues extensively, and want to avoid any surprises before I make a leasing agreement for 2 years. To my understanding the biggest issue regarding battery life on Core Duo based laptops is when there's something connected to the USB port. From what I've read (http://www.hardmac.com/news/2006-02-16/#5148) the Core Duo stops energy saving management no matter what you connect to the USB port. This would mean, that even something as idle as a Logic XSkey would significantly reduce the battery life. Could anyone with a MBP and some low-power USB device test this and report. I would appreciate it!

Mine left China sunday night, and I got it yesterday morning at 8:30. I'm using it now, and I love it. It's by far the best computer I have ever used. :D

2-day shipping or standard? Secondly, mine arrived at the Fedex Dest. in my city this morning just about 10 minutes ago, is that good chances of it being delivered today? Or will it need to be sorted and a bunch of junk making it not out the door in time for today's deliveries? I really hope the latter isn't the case...
