Thanks John for your reply...The powerbook G4s are really quite hot already and I find it quite annoying but if the macbook pros are even hotter, thast quite disturbing, plus the whining issue is really bad news as I needed this MBP for my mobile studio to mix and compose on...

Argh, I guess I have to wait for Rev Bs....

John, you've inspired me to make my first post! I've been reading the forums here for a while, and I've finally decided to make the jump to a Macintosh. I'm eagerly awaiting a MacBook Pro, and I'm both excited and worried.

I'm a little concerned about the heat, noise, etc, but to be honest, I'm sure it'll be so much better in both of those departments compared to the Rev A Alienware laptop piece of junk I'm typing on now. The idea of polite customer service is amazing...

Anyone have advice on games/essential software to toss on this system? I'm wary of running things under emulation, and think I'll wait until native software for big purchases - might just have to get Doom 3 though. You know, to kill time.

- Quil

[edit] For example, where my left and right wrists sit have scorch marks (playing games on it for more than a couple minutes was actually painful), and I have to unplug it at night, simply because the power converter is so loud. And don't even get me started on the battery life.

To the whine issue - I also hope it isn't too bad/fixable, but really, don't most people listen to music while they work anyways?

I have a Macbook pro 1.83ghz CTO on order, still no signs of shiping. But I was told by a Apple rep on the phone (Yeah they dont know to much but maybe somre more than others) and I was told it will ship next week. I ordered on the 31st of January. About the Whining noise I currently have a HP laptop and it also does this, it is fairly annoying but only when you pay attention to it. But the MBP may be more quiet, and if it is...then it shouldnt be a big deal.

I just wanted to say thanks :) , especially for the pictures. If anyone hasn't seen them, they really show the difference in brightness between a Cinema Display, PB, and MacBook Pro. Check them out!

Agreed, that is the first evidence I have seen that shows not only that it's brigther but Job's claims seem to be true, it does look just as bright at that 30" ACD behind it, thank you very much from me as well! I also aknowledge that you check them out like AvSRoCkCO1067 said:)

Also, I heard some (or at least one) people/person say that their MacBook Pro arrived a full day before there estimated delivery by FedEx. Can you explain that, or how that happened other then being extremly lucky, and is this a common theme - how I would love to get mine tomorrow oppose to waiting another day... Any information would make me quite excited for tomorrow's possibilities, ohhhhh I sincerely hope so!:D

My fedex estimated delivery was Thursday by 10:30am. Left China Sunday night, and in 36 hours, was delivered to my door.

Clearly--they gave themselves more time than necissary. Which is good, because I'm going out of town tonight (wed), and I'm glad to have this thing.

I checked out the MacBooks at my Apple Store today.

There is a DEFINITE and PRONOUNCED WHINE... coming from this thread. Not, as near as I could tell, from the the MacBook ;) But in total silence I imagine I'd hear everything from the HD to the fans.

What I checked:

Screen - yes, it's bright!

Noise - nothing unusual that I could detect, and I leaned in close. I know it may vary with time/usage though.

Size - I noticed the thinness of the base compared to my 15" AlBook PBG4, but did not notice the increased width of the case (speakers seemed bigger, but somehow the total width didn't strike me). Side by side you can tell the case width is increased, but it's not bad. And of course, good for movies: the screen is wider too.

MagSafe cord - reversible (there's a light on the top AND the bottom so it doesn't matter which way you attach) and the magnet holds more strongly than I'd have thought. I think it will hold FULLY as well as my PBG4's plug--except that for a sideways tug, my PBG4 would go flying, while MagSafe would save the day as intended.

ExpressCard slot - how do you eject? Is it motorized? There's no eject button.

AirportAntenna - looks BIG (on the hinge) which can't be a bad thing

Speakers - sounded better than my PBG4, but hard to compare without having the same song on both

iSight - worked great (and WOW it's tiny)

Underside - no stickers, and the usual greenlight battery meter

Backlit keys - noticeably brighter than my 1st-gen 15" (I could cup my hand and see the lighted letters in the shadow despite the bright store lights--something my PBG4 could not do)

Trackpad - nice and big!

Lid - supposedly thicker than my AlBook, but honestly I couldn't tell. It's not unwieldy.

Gap when closed - just like all other AlBooks, meaning a little play, and a little unevenness (look at any laptop--the gap is seldom perfect, it's just that on a perfect, thin, minimalist PowerBook you notice more.)

Drool factor - 10/10! Definitely the finest portable computing that has ever existed on Earth. Now add more sizes please :)

PS, not to interfere with any group hysteria or anything, but my PowerBook G4 has always had a slight whine during certain CPU (or maybe GPU?) activities, like text scrolling (sometimes) or video playback (sometimes) or network activity (sometimes). I think it's common on laptops in general, although I've never heard a good explanation. It could be annoying I suppose, but less so if you don't go looking for it :)

buzz?

I am pretty sure that it is not the screen. It goes away when you start a task (just for a second) but then it is back. Oddly when you have the isight on in photobooth (is that what it is called?) it goes away... The buzzing that I am getting is NOT the screen... weird

That is a good point you make there. Right now I have a 1,2Ghz iBook, and my mom got a 1,33Ghz. Well mine doesnt buzz, and her ibook does. And I confirm it does not come from the screen, and it does stop somtimes, and it's not annoying. How many of you used to go to sleep while your pc was heating up the room with its 5 fans at max speed, while your imac or pb or MBP is whisper quiet??
Btw, you guys are very lucky, in France we dont have any "shipping date surprises", r
ordered mine on Jan. 15th, the order got screwed up because of loans, redone on Jan. 30th, shipping on Mar. 4th:D

----> dont worry for the display, it really does look great!

About the buzzing or whining sound:

Does it go away if something is plugged into the headphone jack? I had a similar problem on a pc laptop and plugging something into the headphone jack switched off the noise.

2-day shipping or standard? And thanks for the info:D

All you guys the MacBook Pro is definitly worth the wait. This is the best laptop on the market right now. I got my MacBook Pro at an Apple Store today and they only had the $2499 model and that was exactly the one that I wanted. As Steve Jobs these laptops are SCREAMERS. No problems at all. The screan brightness is greatly elivated and the built in iSight is incredible. Everything is faster and I know how it is to wait for such a great product and I'm out of that.

This will be my first mac purchase. Is the 2.0 stock model worth the extra $500? Also, any idea when either will be available at apple stores? Thanks

I was just reading a news article about the iMac Core Duos that reminded me of an issue I noted when I was playing with them in the Regent Street store: when changing from one window to another there would often be elements of the first window still littering the screen. When I dragged the second window around the screen to clear them up I sometimes left elements of the second screen scattered all over the place.

So, has anyone else seen this on the Duo iMac and more importantly (for me at least ;)) has anyone noticed this on the MacBook Pros? It is my only real concern.

Regarding the screen scream issue, my Rev A 17" PB does exactly the same thing and yes it can be a little annoying if I let myself be drawn in by it, but 98% of the time I don't even notice it.

Regarding the heat issue, I am not to bothered as long as it does not burn (Apple would be in for a beating if it did). Does anyone know a peripheral manufacturer that makes a little frying pan to sit on the side which draws heat from the MBP itself. I can just see myself there on Sunday mornings catching up with the latest posts on MacRumors whilst frying a little bacon and egg on the side ;).

I believe all ExpressCards will stick out a little so that you can just pull it out. To be honest I would prefer it that way as I so frequently catch the eject button by mistake when I am trying to pull out my CF card that it annoys the hell out of me. Also I tend the have fingers that like to twitch around the side of my PB when I am reading off it and they also have a predisposition to catching the little button which pops out and forces me to eject the card.

It started by getting warm around the left wrist area. Then the area around the power adapter started getting warm.

I left it alone for a while to finish charging. A bit later, I picked it up (the charge light was green). The left side by the power dongle was quite hot. Underneath, the battery was warm, and towards the hinge, and to the left toward the power dongle, it was quite hot.

One can still place it on a lap, but it is definitely warmer than my PBG4. I have a "Lap Desk" I picked up from Staples a while ago - It'll probably be on that on my lap instead of directly.

Oh, and mine does whine. It doesn't appear to be related to the display, but instead to CPU usage.

Does it also whine if you set processor speed to "minimal" instead of "automatic"?

Right, I'm off to work, (even though it's my day off). Going to buy my gift vouchers for my MacBook, which John Lewis' buyers confirmed to me on Monday we are expecting at the beginning of March. Maybe 3-4 weeks tops to wait then.

My little scam here is we don't get staff discount for buying anything on Credit Cards other than our own. We have to use Debit, cheque, vouchers or cash. If I buy on my Egg Card, I lose my discount, but get 1% cash back. Buy on my Debit card, I get discount, but lose 1% cash back, (not so much, but hell that's mine). If I buy vouchers on my Egg Card, I get 1% cash back, but no discount for the buying of the vouchers themselves, then I get staff discount on the vouchers. Overall it's like a 13% discount on a £1429 laptop, with an extra year's warranty thrown in. :D

Certainly worth the extra wait, even though those pictures look great.
