My 1.83 shipped!!!

My 1.83 stock finally shipped. I wasn't able to cancel my order for the first time yesterday and my CC had an outstanding authorisation last night. It says it was picked up at 9:37pm which i assume was sometime this morning here. it also says package received after fedex cutoff. What does that mean. I hope my poor little package won't be sitting somewhere for a whole day without moving. That would make me sad. Does anyone think i'll get my laptop by Friday. Woooohhhhh!!!!!!

I have studied the battery life issues extensively, and want to avoid any surprises before I make a leasing agreement for 2 years. To my understanding the biggest issue regarding battery life on Core Duo based laptops is when there's something connected to the USB port. From what I've read (http://www.hardmac.com/news/2006-02-16/#5148) the Core Duo stops energy saving management no matter what you connect to the USB port. This would mean, that even something as idle as a Logic XSkey would significantly reduce the battery life. Could anyone with a MBP and some low-power USB device test this and report. I would appreciate it!
I plugged in my 2GB USB2 drive and time remaining dropped from 34 minutes to 22 minutes. I just unmounted and removed it and time is back up to 29 minutes.

I know this isn't a good test, but it's a quick one :p

Anandtech showed that the problem was definitely an ACPI driver bug in XP SP 2. Microsoft has even made the article on the bug public, and it describes that in SP 2, they spin off a thread when a USB device is connected which inadvertantly prevented the CPU from ever sleeping. This affected any Centrino system.

If Apple designed their power management correctly in OS X, then this won't ever be an issue.

battery went to "calculating" at 2:45.

went to sleep at: exactly 2:47

currently says I have 2 hours left to charge.

That is actually comparable to my 1.67GHz G4 (either battery I used), I'd get on average 2:30-2:45 off of a charge. Keep in mind: better screen, etc. etc.

iSight USB Battery Drain?

Doesn't the iSight in the MBP run off USB power? I wonder if the iSight itself might account for lower battery life? Just speculating. The FEdEx page says my MBP should arrive at my house within the hour...cant freakin wait.

My MacBook Pro was supposed to come tomorrow.

but it came today! I'm staring at the box. Should I open it? The anticipation is killing me!

Don't think that it has to do with the eye sight because it is off most the time and so should not be drawing power. Of course you will have less battery life if you have it on... same of course goes with Bluetooth, airport etc...

Maybe we should have spent the extra $500 just so we could have felt some love on the forums...
Well, to me the extra $500 was justified in upgrades I would have gotten anyway:

- I wanted at least a 100GB hard drive
- the extra RAM (512MB is unusable in 10.4)
- double the video memory
- faster processor(s)

Actually I can't wait for you 1.83ers and us 2.16ers. Then once all of them are together we can get the ultimate benchmark (and I hope MacWorld, ArsTechnica, Anandtech, or some good source such as these) between the last rev. 15" Powerbook, 1.83 MBP, 2.0 MBP, and 2.16 MBP. Then maybe we'll finally see where that sweet spot of value and performance meet and which is reccomended... For all's information, mine is out for delivery - a 2.16 MBP w/1 gig ram and 7200 100 GB HD!:D

OK, so it appears that the noise is not the screen PWM that happens on my PB G4. That's a good thing. I think mine's just a bit of a lemon.

On the other hand, I'm dismayed about the other noise. This, as it was explained in regards to the g4 chip, happens when the processor goes into a certain mode (which uses a lot of power). I found, both on my 800mhz TiBook and 1.67 AlBook, that when scrolling some of the time in Safari, for instance, that I'd hear a... quick repeated chirpy noise. The most easily reproducible way to get this sound to happen is to start Max/MSP (a graphical audio programming environment). Max would always put both my 'Books into this mode full-time. Quite annoying when doing audio processing!

So, I'm disappointed that switching platforms/vendors didn't quell the problem.

USB decreases Battery life of MBPs

...and remember that the internal Bluetooth 2.0 module is connected via the USB port, so you can save a lot of battery life if you switch it off.

Have there been any Apple Store sightings in the midwest?

St. Louis Galleria received 3 yesterday...sold 2 and one is on display.

St. Louis West county told me they received one, and it was sold. I have a feeling they received 2-3 and put the other(s) on display.

I have a feeling nobody cares about us 1.83ers :(

Oh, I care, but I cared much more when that was what I had ordered. Then I got upgraded. And now I'm typing on it. And it feels good. Real good.

You'll probably be getting yours sooner than you expect, and really, I'm sure you'll be plenty happy with the speed.

Reported from Appleinsider...

The macbooks are NOT processor upgradable, the CPU is soldered on, not in a socket. Big bummer.

And the 15" G4 powerbook is gone from the apple store. I'm OK with that one. :)

Yes!!! I have a friend who is going to buy one in a month or so, but he wants to (a) see it in person, and (b) be able to run some Windows XP apps he has on it.

(a) is now fulfilled...

Still waiting (anxiously) on (b). And I don't think he'll want to be running Linux with VMWare and XP on top of that... on an external USB drive, to top things off!

:)

Wot, this laptop doesn't have a processor upgrade option once you buy it.
That's it, I'm not buying it. That was the last straw.

Oh yeah, this is the newest, greatest laptop. Nevermind. :p

This is only true for Windows Systems... Microsoft already confirmed that their USB drivers have flaws

So? In a couple years, iMac owners and people using other Duo laptops will be able to pop in a faster processor (for dirt cheap). The fact that they've put this artificial limitation on the macbook IS a bummer.

Ordered a little later.

I've been hearing about shipping estimates for after keynote buyers and those who ordered maybe a week ago, but no one yet with my shipping group. I ordered feb. 3 for a stock 1.83 (formerly a 1.67). My original ship date was feb. 28 and is now Mar. 8th after the processor bump. Any guesses on when I could be seeing my new baby?

I feel your pain

I placed my order on 2.15.06, presently my order is scheduled to ship 3.16.06.
Its kind of insiane that there is already a one month backlog on these (wonderful) laptops.
I am not sure if this makes a difference but i opt'ed for the 2.0ghz and added the 120gig HDD. Has anyone seen/experienced "custom" machines taking this long to ship?
Has anyone who recived one made custom changes, or are all these happy people running stock?
