WOW!

My estimated ship date was March 8,
but I just got my email notice that
it shipped TODAY!!! That is 12 DAYS
early! Almost two full weeks!

Is anyone else who ordered later
getting some really good shipping news?
I think its going to start getting better now the first batch are out the door. I ordered today macmall says that they get their next shipment on the march3, and i got overnight shpipping (despite their site saying 3-4 weeks, which it has been saying since day 1).

Yes, OS9 (and prior) do not support intel chips. With the coming of intel goes the support for classic apps.

And good friggin' riddance! Get sick of classic app whiners, you (hopefully) don't see Windoze lusers bemoaning the loss of Win3.1?!? Change or become a footnote in history. The past is gone, move on, grow up.

How come all of new packaging of apple products (5G iPod, MacBook Pro, nano, shuffle) are all thin? when i got my 4G iPod it came in lovely cube packaging. i guess that due to the massive sales of iPod's means that they only want to use little amounts of packaging to save on costs...

This is kind of off topic, but I really like Apple's new packaging. As a consumer I know it uses less raw materials and creates less waste. As a Apple shareholder I know it allows Apple to ship more on a pallet, and cuts weight down. The packaging is still unique and cool as always, just a little less of it. I'm not buying a box, I'm buying what is in it. I wish other companies would try to copy Apple in this regard as much as they try to copy the iPod and iTunes. Nothing is more frustrating to me than to see big software boxes knowing there is but a lone CD with install sheet inside.

Huh? Apple declared OS9 dead in what, 2001. What app could you possibly need in 2006 that isn't now OS X? And don't give us this load that OS9 is more reliable than OS X because it's not. I used OS 6-9, so I know all about extension conflicts and system crashes all too well. Never had any kind of conflict in OS X and the only system crash I ever had was when I installed some bad RAM. 99.9% of people care about Classic apps right now as they are fearful of the Black Plague.

Well, I don't know where else they are...but the Apple Store in Cambridge has three MacBook Pros on show and several in stock (Apparently) :D

The store in Schaumburg IL is supposed to call me when
they get some in, but so far I have not received that call.

Also, my Fedex tracking doesn't show any of these China
or Alaska locations. Mine says it is being shipped from
Sacramento CA. No customs to deal with anymore!

I GOT IT TODAY! I'm using it right now at my college through their wireless connection. THIS THING IS AWESOME...IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT! Photobooth made me laugh my ass off when i took some ugly pictures of myself with the morph effects. To everyone who doesnt yet have theirs, just hang on, cause when you get it you wont be disappointed.

No kidding! The thing I have enjoyed the most was Photobooth. It sounds stupid but those geometric warps are hillarious! My g/f and I took a bunch of them and I was laughing so hard I cried.

Oh, yeah, and they're damn fast. :)

I'll have mine rocking with 2GB of RAM and a bluetooth 2.0 keyboard / mouse setup. Also going to do dual-monitor with my 23" LCD. I'm pimping this thing out.

Of other note-- the magsafe power adapter thing is actually quite nice. I think what makes me so happy with this purchase are all the little things that add up to one great product.

No kidding. Do you really mean Cambridge, as in the UK (I guess that's an Apple Center, not an Apple Store)? I've called the Apple (flagship) Store on Regent Street every day of the past week and they hadn't received any. With my luck they probably received them on saturday when I DIDN't call...

Oh well.

oooooooooooooo!

No email, no ship info on the Apple Store site!
Oddly, since last Sat. my Visa has a preauth. hold showing....but Visa sez that they don't charge until the merchant sends a bill...........waiting.......waiting.........no info

I ordered on Feb 4 and have a ship date of March 8

*Here's to crossing our fingers*

Credit card pre-authorization

No worries. They did this with mine too, but it finally shows that it shipped out as of Friday evening.

They pre-authorize the card(s) you give them for the amount, to make sure it will actually clear. If the available credit is there, then they just let the pre-authorization sit out there and eventually expire itself (returning the credit to your account again), and they don't actually charge the card for the total until the order goes out the door.

(Just make sure you don't charge things to your card(s), forgetting that Apple will soon be charging that total amount, and causing it to get declined at the last minute!)

This is pretty ridiculous. There are some apps that are still in Classic, weren't updated, and are the best apps for their purposes today. Just because you don't personally own or use one of these apps doesn't mean you should call those who do "whiners."

Incidentally, your Windows analogy gets turned on its head since EVERY REVISION OF WINDOWS HAS FUNDAMENTALLY DEPENDED UPON DOS.

Good point jacobj - yes, our deliveries may take much longer to get to us than our US chums, but at least they've picked up some culture and probably a sexual disease or two on the way...
No need to rush when you can take your time and enjoy the sights!

LOL!!! PMSL!!! :D :D :p :p :)

That turns nothing on its head. I bought an old PC specifically because it's the only dependable way to run many old DOS games that won't run under 2000/XP.

It looks like many people are going to have to keep a B&W G3 attached to the network with a VNC server running. Either that or migrate. It simply doesn't make any sense at this point for Apple to spend the time and money to bring an OS that's been dead for five years to a legacy-free platform.

Sounds like SheepShaver's what you want. Donate some time or money. If you think Apple wouldn't charge you for the diversion of resources necessary to get Classic working on Intel, you're wrong :)

Classic support?

Well, as far as I'm concerned, the *real* point here is - if you insist on using old software that only works in an officially "outdated" operating system, then you should match your hardware to the software and the OS. In other words, you're the perfect audience to keep using and supporting the refurbished market for older Macs.

Companies like Sonnet would practically cease to exist if it weren't for the folks still interested in squeezing more useful life out of older machines.

What I don't understand are people who have to buy the "latest and greatest" machines, and then whine about lack of support for their 10 year old software? This is equally true for Windows AND Mac users!

Why throw good, working machines in the landfills when they're still the best solution for some people's needs?

just because you're holding on to software that was made 5 to 10 years ago and you're having trouble making it work on new machines doesnt mean you should whine. thats like trying to play a tape in a modern stereo that came only with a CD player and whining about it. either keep the old stereo or replace your tapes. keep an old mac or replace your apps.

apple shouldnt continue the difficult and expensive task of supporting an OS that was pronounced dead 5 years ago, for a tiny fraction of people who can't let go and move on.

dont get me wrong, i used flash 5 in classic up until about 2 years ago and I was grateful for it, but to expect it to work forever more, let alone 5 full years after it's obsolescence in this fast moving industry, would be ludicrous.
