I agree with you about everything, except the optical drive being useless. How? I know many people who use their optical drives on a daily basis. Just wondering why you think so.

From a personal point of view, I have never used mine. If I want games I download them from steam or whatever. All the TV shows I can stream in HD from abc.com, fox.com etc. Movies I don't watch on laptop when I have a 1080p TV.

If I want to watch movies on the go I can rip my DVDs to the HDD. Besides its less power draw on the battery than a DVD drive.

As far as installing stuff you can use Remote Disk.

"My Apple Certified Retailer in northwest Arkansas told my dad that they were 100% out of all non-Air portables, both Macbooks and Macbook Pros. He also told us that both would be updated on Tuesday, since that's when their order for them is going out. Apparently they are dropping the white model Macbook and going with a black option and an aluminum option, as well as adding backlit keyboards and LED screens. MBPs are getting Penryn processors, the choice between 256 and 512 megabytes of VRAM, and the chicklet keyboard found on the air and the macbook. Of course, both new portables will have multi-touch trackpads."

My dream update, LOL. I just want an aluminum casing on the current MacBook!

Sounds like your dealer was dreaming and all.

Many people inside Apple, like the Apple Care team, don't know what's coming. I highly doubt Apple have decided call up a random dealer in Arkansas just to keep them in the loop.

They may have deduced MacBooks were coming from shipment dates and other patterns/previous experience etc., but knowing the exact specs? I doubt it is more than an educated guess.

Maybe it's none of the above??? Anybody recall that apple patent released here a few weeks ago? It showed a portable computer (or a laptop) being docked inside an iMac-like screen.

Maybe that's what we're looking at???

It shows it to be 17.5" and 10 POUNDS! lol

Ummm...wouldn't the shipping weight be about 10 lbs? If you include the box, packing materials, mag-safe power cord, osx discs, manuals, etc.

To everyone else freaking out:

I'm about as fed up as the next guy. I've been waiting a long while to get my first Mac. But Apple isn't just sitting on a pile of MBP's saying "you will never get this! you will never get this! lalalalala". Believe me, with the beating their stock has taken lately, they want to get these out as quickly as possible. They do know how many people are waiting. They are not trying to torture us, despite the fact that it seems that way. However, what they are trying to do is deliver the best product possible with all due speed. I'm sure they could only wish to have months worth of additional MBP sales under their belt, to have a jump on the rest of the market. But for whatever reason, they hit some snags.

Like I've mentioned in other posts, I always thought that the MBP would have to wait until the Geforce 9 series came out. I know some of them were announced a few days ago, not sure if the mobile ones are out yet. Think about it...I know for at least the last few big updates they ALWAYS bumped up the graphics card to the next highest level. Doubt they will use ATI cards, since those are now owned by AMD, and Apple is now closely tied with Intel, which is AMD's main rival. Your friend's enemies are your enemies kind of deal.

So everyone just needs to calm down. Go take a break, go for a walk, listen to some music--clear your mind. As for myself, I'm going to finish my Lightwave homework and then workout at the gym to the point of exhaustion so that I get some good sleep tonight. Then I'll wake up, and order the new MBP if they exist. If they don't, then I'll punch something, and get some breakfast. Good luck everyone.

An MB update (alone) would defy all logic seeing as their processors would then virtually mirror the MBPs. Some serious weirdness going on, that's for sure! I still predict MBPs (and maybe iMacs too).

Dude, if that came out, I would be all over that. It would be especially neat if the iMac dock had an additional hard drive, and some way of having a stand-alone video card that could boost the performance of a Macbook when docked. Who needs all the power of your video card when on the go? It drains the battery way too fast. I would much rather have a Macbook, but it's lower resolution screen and video card prohibit me. This would fix the problem, and probably cost as much as a Pro, if not slightly more. I'd be down for that.

Wow, I've seen this stuff all before. Sounds like the Powerbook G4 ranting from before the Powerbook Ti was released and of course who could forget the Powerbook G5 speculation.

Once this MBP people get their new machine (I do agree that it is time for an update) I'm wondering if we are going to start seeing iMac update/screen ranting on every thread on Mac Rumors?

I almost feel guilty because I am entertained by this whole new MBP speculation stuff which has clearly upset a few people here on Mac Rumors.

THAT is an ESE.. Earth Shattering Event. Worthy of his Steveness to show.

Exactly...but...these conflicting MB/MBP-rumors seem to me like the first, very shy and calm RDF pulses getting out in the world.

So maybe we'll get the Books tomorrow, and that ESE will be the updated ACD, which will be announced at the SDK event.

what about the little guy...?

macbook (pro), shmackbook (shmo)...i want new minis!!! if someone could just make up a rumour about mini updates i would greatly appreciate it.

Perhaps the delay that we've seen so far is because Apple was trying to get both teams working on the MB and MBP to release simultaneously. I doubt there is any possible way that the MB would be upgraded to better processors then the MBP, unless Apple released a statement saying that the MBP will be available within x amount of weeks. Otherwise people will freak, like the Burger King commercial, except worse.

Maybe the MB release source is only familiar with the MB's, and not the MBP release schedules. If there is a MB release, I would think it would be simultaneous, although one would think an event would warrant dual releases. This would only be the case because of product cycles and the duration since the last MBP update. However, the MB was released a MONTH before the MBP updates last summer. At least I think it was about a month. Either way it was earlier. So this could be possible, it has been done before.

Hey MacSpartans!!

TOMORROW...WE DINE IN HELL!!

THIS IS MACRUMORS!!!

(Desperately waiting for an updated MBP)

macbook (pro), shmackbook (shmo)...i want new minis!!! if someone could just make up a rumour about mini updates i would greatly appreciate it.

It seems not even Apple care that much about the Mini, it was last updated alongside the iMac (7th of August 07)...While the iMac received all the attention, nothing was said of the Mini update, someone at the "Apple Event" had to ask what was happening to it as there were rumours it was to be discontinued - the response was literally "oh yeah and we also updated the Mini"

The new minis are rumored to launch on March 4. There will be two tiers:

The first tier will be the thickness of the Apple TV. It will incorporate the Santa Rosa chipset, X3100 graphics, 1gb ram, 1.8" 80gb hd, and superdrive standard. Price: $499.

The second tier will be a little beefier, and the case will be thicker as well. It will incorporate the lastest Penryn processors, but only only offer the 2.5ghz chip. It will have 2gb of ram minimum, and use a 128mb Geforce 9300 graphics card. Hd up to 250gb 5400rpm min, with options up to 500gb 7200rpm. It will also have a superdrive standard. Price: $849.

There. Do those specs suffice?
