macOS 13 Ventura on Unsupported Macs Thread

Smooth upgrade from Ventura 13.7.5 -> 13.7.6 Beta on my HackBookPro6,2. Applying post-install patches with OCLP 2.4.0 Nightly. Posting this with Safari 18.1.1. Very responsive and since Ventura still natively supports Broadcom Wi-Fi in this MBP6,2, it needs "only" Nvidia Tesla root patches (no Wi-Fi root patches).

EDIT: For improved graphics performance on my old Nvidia Tesla non-metal graphics, I configure the following in "System Settings > Accessibility > Display"
  • Reduce Motion
  • Reduce Transparency

Hi all,

I’m running macOS Ventura 13.7.5 on a mid-2012 MacBook Pro using OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP 2.4.0).

I’ve blocked updates using:

  • OCLP’s BlockSystemUpdates set to true
  • /etc/hosts entries to block Apple update servers
  • Tried disabling softwareupdated and SoftwareUpdateNotificationManager with launchctl, but those failed
However, I still have:

  • Spinning wheel in System Settings > Software Update
  • “Software Update Available (1)” badge
  • Blank Software Update pane (no UI, just spinner)
Some people (e.g., ChatGPT) say this is just a harmless cosmetic issue. Others (e.g., Grok AI) say it's an indicator that the update system is still running in the background and a full reinstall is the only way to fix it cleanly.

I don’t want to reinstall again unless I have to. So…

Can anyone confirm:

  • Is it really safe to just leave the badge/spinner alone as-is and manually apply .pkg security updates when needed?
  • Or should I wipe and reinstall Ventura cleanly with update blocks in place from the start?
Thanks for any insights from folks who’ve been through this. My main use case is just coding with VS Code + Python—no major demands. I just want my system to stay stable and last as long as possible.
 
Is “softwareupdated” process truly running in background? Check Activity Monitor. Make sure to select menu > View > Show All Processes

Thanks for replying. When I go have software update open w/ spinning wheel next to checking for updates and badge next to Software Update Available, and blank UI (No Sequoia information). I have All Processes checked in Activity Monitor and there are 2 software items:
1. Software Update (General(System Settings))
2. software_firstrun_tasks

When I do a force quit on both they go away. Closed Activity Monitor. Re-open and those 2 are still gone, but when I re-open System Settings and go to Software Update I checked in Activity Monitor and Software Update (General (System Settings)) comes back.

I'm at a loss, don't know what to do - if I should just ignore it or do the whole reinstall like Grok suggested (but I'm not confident that it would be any different after reinstall, it seems Apple doesn't allow anyone to fully remove update checks, but I don't know)...Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there, I just noticed that you were able to go to from Ventura 13.7.5 -> 13.7.6. Just curious, how did you do it? I have been trying all day and keep getting the same error message (see attached). I have tried almost all installers I could find troubleshooting w/ Grok / chatgpt, but nothing is working. I'm on mid 2012 MBP running Ventura 13.7.5 via OCLP. Appreciate any insights!

Thanks for replying. Yes my internet is very stable and fast...I've tried Mr Macintosh among many others using Safari browser. I am at a loss. My Mac is 9,2 mid 2012 SSD 16GB running Ventura 13.7.5 OCLP. Tried troubleshooting several hours w/ GROK and ChatGPT and neither were successful with helping troubleshoot, so I don't know what to do. I tried submitting an Issue to OCLP GitHub, but for some reason it wouldn't go through. If you have any suggestions, I'm all ears?
 
Still using OCLP version 0.6.8. on my iMac 5k 2015.

Is it worth updating to the latest OCLP? Has there been any substantial improvements or changes vis à vis Ventura or with my Mac model?

I hesitate to update it since all is working well except for Safari which is a bit slow with YouTube (other browsers are fine) and the Apple TV app which doesn’t work at all, but I don’t care about.

Otherwise everything works great. Does the latest OCLP improve things over 0.6.8. in any substantial way?

@adnbek If it works for you in Ventura, then no reason to upgrade. You would need to upgrade OCLP if upgrading macOS beyond Ventura.

EDIT: Note that I am stuck at Safari 18.1.1 with my non-metal MBP6,2 running Ventura. I did not find that any OCLP changes after 0.6.8 improved my MBP6,2 Ventura experience. You may wish to examine the change logs for releases beyond 0.6.8 to determine for yourself whether there are improvements that are relevant to your mac model. Look here. If you can add an APFS volume, you can test newer OCLP in that volume (booting with a bootable USB with the newer Open Core EFI). The OCLP patches to the added APFS volume will not affect your current Ventura baseline patched with OCLP 0.6.8.

Hi ! Sorry for my noob question. I have a mac mini 2012 with 16go of ram 2 ssd 1To one for mac os x and one for windows.
It run on Big Sur and want to upgrade to monterey.
I have make all update and creat usb key with open core legacy with all driver needed.
I restarted to efi and choose install usb key and disk utility but now ?
I have my ssd and containers with 2 and more 3 not mount
Which do erase only hd system ? Containers ? Or all Ssd System?

If you want to upgrade your Big Sur boot drive, then choose THAT as the destination for your Monterey install.
You should not need to erase anything, unless you don't want to do a simple upgrade, but you need to erase what is already there. Again, you should not need to erase anything, just to upgrade Big Sur to Monterey. Boot to your Monterey installer (choose the EFI partition first, then choose the Monterey USB, while holding the Option key to choose EFI first, then choose the Monterey USB, then after booting to the installer, choose your Big Sur drive as the destination.
Come back if that doesn't work, and we'll try to help you on.
I WILL also say that I have exactly that same 2012 Mac Mini, and I find that I always have to continue to hold the Option key during the install and several reboots, just to make sure that I continue to pick the EFI partition, then choose the installer (which will probably be selected already, letting you just let the EFI boot, followed by the installer, or your boot drive (whichever shows as already selected.)
I know this seems a little confusing, but you just have to watch for what comes next during the various reboots during the upgrade install. Don't forget to hold the Option key during each reboot. It's important...

Can someone please share a link to Safari18.1.1VenturaAuto.pkg? All the links that I've found are dead.

Yes I make it same you explain me and that works fine after several boots with touch option and start on Monterey stay openCore update and great 👍 no data loose and my key password App work know doesn't work on Big sur can't update it !? Can use it 2 years again
But i want the new mini M4 perhaps later

I have a question, you seem to know a lot about it. I know a little too, but I’ve moved on. I was told during the Power PC era and the transition to Intel, but with family, the kids asked me no less questions. Life trembles and making the equipment last these "for me" days is important at the moment, don't ruin its use. What's 1 minute 34 instead of 57 seconds "personally and everyone has these boundaries" well no, I'll keep it even if I keep getting frustrated

My question I see on the last mac mini m4 it's possible to use SSD NVME ON THUNDERBOLT 4 OR 5.0 and on two can use it for App same as internal DD.
But I see too can change internal SSD with SSD modify and for 1To not more expensive than Apple Option.
But do you think that never mistake with it. If I make it doesn't want on update not recognize the new SSD not original SSD.

Can I install macOS on an external SSD, connected to Thunderbolt 4 or 5?
Yes, you can. Thunderbolt 5 is only on a Mac mini M4 Pro, and you need an external Thunderbolt drive that supports Thunderbolt 5.
You will also need to make sure the security settings on your m4 Pro mini are set to allow booting to an external drive (You probably already know this...)

It's easy to change it just have another mac for reinstall system.

my question not sure you can answer !? Do you think this ssd "not officially" can work for future updates. Because options are quickly expensive
 
I had a full install of Ventura 13.7.6 using OCLP on a iMac8,1. I swear Safari (18.5) was just fine, however I decided to upgrade my WiFi/Bluetooth card to a BCM94360CD (maybe a hint that Safari is crashing because of some feature that depends on this newer WiFi/BT card - like continuity). After a long quest (I will write an article about it), if finally worked! You can see in the screenshot that I have even UniversalControl up and running.

But then, Safari started crashing, and I couldn't understand, and could only assume that was because of the hardware upgrade. I decided to do a fresh install, thinking that that would solve it. Sadly I wasn't aware of this thread haha

Now I have Safari crashing again, and I can't find the Safari 18.1.1 installer :/

Safari is my default browser on all my Apple devices, could someone send me the installer, please?
