Worst MacOS update ever! My USB mouse with a dongle is not working. Can't use screensavers anymore and there is no easy way to downgrade. Regret I rushed to install. Will not happen again.

Don't remember having any OS problems with either of these devices...that computer isn't mine, but my dad had one just like it. The phone is mine and still works. I usually take it snowboarding as smart phone batteries hate the cold.

But, I now have an M1 Air and my new iPhone 12 mini is arriving today. Yes, we pay premium prices for these things, but I have just learned to deal with OS 'problems'. The track pad is annoying, but if it doesn't respond immediately, I just press a little harder, as these new pads are already very soft/light to click.

You can enable tap to click in settings. Now even the slightest tap will register as click.

Thanks, I knew that. But the previous Monterey update introduced a bug that caused intermittent problems with the tap to click feature, the main topic of this thread.

Was the tap to click bug and memory leak bug only on the new MacBook Pro’s? I have an M1 Air and have had none of these issues

There were/are at least two memory leaks.

  • The one affecting Control Center seems to happen in the combination of HDR and auto-brightness. Memory use grows as the brightness gets automatically re-adjusted. Since your machine doesn't have HDR, that one wouldn't affect you.
  • The one affecting various GUI apps seems to happen if you have a custom pointer size and/or color. Memory use grows as the mouse moves around.
  • It's not clear to me if WindowServer really has a leak, or if there are additional ones.

There are two issues I'm hoping they could solve soon:
  1. A weird bug where Safari doesn't become active after being inactive for a period of time (I don't think anyone else has this problem and it's difficult to explain, but it's certainly making things increasingly frustrating.
  2. The flickering issues on external monitors when in dark mode or when the monitor is displaying dark backgrounds.

I realize that they won't be resolved in this update (especially the second one, since I know I'm not the only one experiencing this issue), but... well, one can dream I guess.
Oh I definitely have problem 1. I keep Firefox to hand for whenever Safari decides to have one of it's lengthy pauses. I tried the Technology Preview to see if it helped, but it didn't.

I get it on My MacBook Pro 14 (Max, 64GB), but it doesn't show on my M1 Mini.

As ever, same advice. You never know.

Curious what this line in the release notes means
  • Menu bar extras may be obscured by the camera housing on 2021 MacBook Pro computers

Can anyone see change in behaviour on 2021 MacBook Pros if the menubar extras go past the notch?

I've found that moving Time Machine to APFS in 11.0 Big Sur made it faster and more reliable for me.

I use both formats. TM on Big Sur and then Monterey continues to back up to an existing HFS+ drive, but I started another backup on a new regular HDD and it uses APFS. Can't say I notice a difference in speed of backups, because they vary in size.

It probably means they fixed the bug where status items become partially visible if they overlap with the notch. They probably changed it to hide them altogether in that case.

My casual observation is that it the most major complaints about any MacOS are usually fixed by the .2/.3 release. which takes 6 months. I waited till Big Sur 11.3 came out before I updated my main computer.

Does anybody else take a conservative approach in updating their OS? I have a Windows computer and same thing there, not in a rush to update to Win11.

I work in software companies for user facing products, and usually the first release is terrible for all the companies I worked for. It takes a long time to solve edge cases and long term stability issues that are hard to reproduce.

don

don't think safari will ever be 120hz scrolling or it would of been out by now
macOS 12.1 adds 120Hz for Chrome and other 3rd parties (vscode). Safari will likely enable that too, there have been several notes regarding this I recent commit logs.

Has anyone seen any mention about EPS thumbnails showing in the Finder? This bug is the most annoying to me of all of them. Having a folder of vector files is painful at the moment and I haven't been able to find a workaround.

I don't see anything except a 2014 iMac mentioned from his posts? Be nice to know whats he's talking about. I have a 16" M1 Max and haven't seen the memory issue either.
Same here. No memory issues. And this is what makes fixing bugs so difficult. People think it’s extremely widespread but the ones experiencing the issue are those who post about it. Which can inflate the issue on forums but it’s not a major issue.

And that is why there is a 12.1 release coming out very soon. No OS is perfect at launch.
I work in QA as a senior software tester. Even for a very small program you can have many many edge cases that the developer didn't think about. On a project like macOS there are literally millions and millions of possible permutations and combinations of possible use cases. It is not humanly and machinely possible to find and test all these. So through the process of customer feedback you have to try to weed out as many pain points as possible as soon as possible. And this is what Apple is doing fast and efficiently.
Yes it sucks to have to deal with these early version bugs, but at least Apple cares enough about their customers to quickly release fixed versions. Not every company is this proactive.
Agreed. And I really wish people would stop blaming work from home as the cause. Remember Snow Leopard at launch? How about even Catalina? High Sierra? I had issues MAJOR issues with these that made me unable to do my job. Catalina was most recent and I was experiencing 3-5 kernel panics a day. And Apple confirmed it was an OS issue because now that same iMac is working fine with the latest Catalina.
