With or without an avatar, there is so much empty vertical space - seems a bit too much.
Especially as on a desktop the horizontal width doesn't expand beyond a certain point, then you just get white columns on either side.

We'll tighten that down later today.

Also there's a toggle on the bottom left of the screen that lets it expand fully

You don't like the full content in emails? I'd think most people would prefer that.

arn
It's fine with text responses. like the notifications I got today. It's when I get notifications from a picture thread that the full resolution pictures are attached. Maybe place the view this thread button closer to the top of the email to avoid scrolling through a photo gallery only to see it again on the thread.

I'm in love with the new email format. It's 1,000 times better than the previous versions. :)

Are URLs potentially much longer with XenForo than they were with vBulletin?

I ask because status updates may refuse to accept post URLs such as this:

https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...he-never-…-she-never-….1888975/#post-21399735

I can abbreviate it, for example –

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1888975/#post-21399735

– but that leads only to the topic. Not the post.

Specifically:
  • whilst it's possible to abbreviate the URL of the topic
  • expansion of the abbreviation for the topic causes loss of the post-specific #post-nnnnnnnn tail of the URL.
Side note: a guess, this may form the basis of a low priority enhancement request to developers of XenForo.

Any chance something can be done about the big blue-backgrounded block at the bottom of each page? (How's that for alliteration?) That takes up way too much room. And, if not, can the floating red down-arrow take one to the quick-reply box and not the bottom of the page?

A workaround, however you can use the post ID in the form of the following URL to take you to the individual post.

Overall brightness

From the nearby recent change log:

… overall page brightness complaints …

I did glance at a handful of the earlier reports about excessive brightness. I was very surprised.

Surprised because I have been, still am, very harshly critical of the excessive brightness of OS X Yosemite. Apple's operating system should be off-topic from the theme changes at MacRumors

… I'm surprised because I spent a reasonable amount of time with the proposed new theme during the two weeks before migration, and I never sensed excessive brightness here. (If I had sensed it, the report would have been immediate and public.)

To clarify: whilst I don't doubt that some people found problems with brightness here, I did wonder whether some combination of other factors – not the design per se – caused the design to be perceived as too bright.

(Most of this topic remains unread by me – too much to properly digest at this time – so apologies if thoughts such as those have been made already.)

I am enjoying the slightly darker motif today, thanks guys! However, I too am missing the info under the avatars. Would very much like to have it back! :)

What about a little icon to expand it? That way its collapsed by default and you can always toggle it on or off.

Your post is a good example of why a dislike button would be a bad idea.

I like there only being Likes because it keeps things simpler, but particularly because it makes MR a pleasant place. If you had dislikes, it would make every thread feel hostile and stir discord. Better for people to express themselves in word if they wish to be negative.

A dislike vote is like a boot stamping on a human face forever.

Forever? LOL. Geeze, exaggerate much?

I would suggest some posts DESERVE to be "boot stamped". Besides, if someone is upset because of something as SILLY as someone else disliked their post, how are they going to deal with the daily news where actual upsetting things happen? Or road rage? Or a potential future draft to a war? I'm starting to think this whole "time out + PC" thing is turning people into overly emotional train wrecks or something.

I suppose at least now people will be able to see that it's the same people "liking" posts all the time, lest they get the idea that a lot of people use the system. I think people will simply be less inclined to use it period with their names on it, particularly on sensitive topics. I'm inclined to simply ignore it since it has little meaning.

I think the problem appears exaggerated simply because the message text in the previous site was in light grey while the rest of the page was white. This made the text you read look far less "bright" than the overall page design. The new site made the background and the message posts bright white and a page that is just "all white" stands out. There seemed to be more on the screen before to also "tamp it down". Right now it doesn't look too bright here, but it's day time. Combined with the "flat" look and I think the site was a bit of a shock at first (kind of like Yosemite).

Is there something that can be adjusted on XF that would fix how the user profile appears on the main forums page? If you look at the attached screenshot, part of my username wraps around to a second line in Safari. But the same page in Firefox leaves plenty of room for the username to display on one line and is set below the avatar instead of next to it like in Safari.

Or is this the way the browser renders the page?

No thread reply button at the top of the page? Have to scroll to the bottom to comment.

I appreciate that you guys are being responsive (pun intended) with changes and amendments, but as a web dev and design guy it really worries me that this is all being done after launch, and a week before the biggest Apple event of the year. Yikes.

If I tried anything like this with a client and this many users they would string me up by the balls.

@arn I hope you know what you're doing!?

There was a trial phase of two weeks, where everyone could participate. It is a big message board with many members, there are bound to be issues, and none of the stated issues are board threatening.

It's the audience I'd be worried about, rather than the stability of the board software.

Speaking of which, it seems capable. But IMHO the configuration/setup work to reach parity with the old forum should have been done before launch.

I'd love to see some side-by-side grabs of the same content in the old and new themes so we have something solid to refer to. As part of my design phase/process I'd have prepared such screens for the client, before any development work began.

PS: I wasn't aware of the test period before today.

Lots of stuff only comes out with broad customer exposure. I'd think as a web dev you'd understand that more than others.

Did the light blue on top of posts and on the side margin where the avatar is get a shade darker? It seems like it - I'm seeing much better contrast now for some reason, and perhaps this is why? If so, good step in the right direction (as was removing the turquoise around the "New" label and moving the "Report" button to the right).

There are lots of features that will never be ported over. Achieving 100% feature parity would be an endless task. there are many features people don't care about (hybrid threaded display) that would have taken a long time to implement, and other features (excluding specific forums new posts) that seem to be higher priority.

We made some other minor tweaks to improve the contrast appearance - but the exact blue shade is the same.
