Good. :) I thought that disclosing that I've thrown a football many times before in my teens might raise an eyebrow although I've forgotten more than I ever knew. Something to be said for going to school with ex-pat American kids except it also gave me an unfortunate small soft spot for 70s hair rock.

I'm in :p Although, if it's easier, I could just bring my Wilson a few miles rather than you explaining having it to Immigration/Customs :p

That works. One less thing I'll have to carry. Especially since my daughter is making grumblings about going. Since I'm taking my son to Vegas for a debauchery excursion for our birthdays in May, she says it'd be only fair for me to take her to the U.K.

Somehow Vegas and London aren't exactly in the same league but oh well, she'll have fun.

Interesting, I'll certainly consider coming along. However last time I went on one of these about 6 years ago, I met some complete in-your-face nerds. Fortunatly the venue was Macworld London so we didn't stand out as much.

However, this is different and everyone here seems to be cool, even given that I haven't been on any forums in 5 years, I'm sure this will no geek fest, just an event organized facebook style.

Holy hell you people are making it all too easy. I think I'm going. I think my hesitation was the price of the ticket but feck it, it's not like I have to answer to anyone but my boss who pays my rent. ;) I think I'm booking it in the AM after I hunt down my passport rather, I'll book once I locate the passport to ensure I can even leave the US. I'll show face to Teh EuroDemis™. Be prepared to sign the NDA. ;) I'll probably rent a car after I get out of London to drive around and see the countryside. It should be fun. I think I'll have enough vacation time off by then to get me by for a good 5 work days plus 4 days for the weekend.

Wow! Can you give me a ride for a day to Oxfordshire (and hang w. Laura too?) If so, I won't rent a car. Don't forget to get one of these:

Good tip. I'll let you know about the car and the hanging with Laura. If anything I'm sure I'll see you at the picnic if I decide to go. Right now it's just a wild hair and no flight has been booked. I'm going to sleep on it.

That would be pretty fab. :)

Bring some Froot Loops. ;)

Funny you say that, I was thinking the same thing. One bag for cereal and the return flight it'll be filled with candy. :D

Budget accomodation suggestion

I see some people with some spare cash are planning to fly in. I don't want any MR members who are not quite so flush to feel excluded.

If you're thinking of coming, but worried about the price of hotel accommodation, might I suggest this backpacker hotel?

http://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/london/hostels/london_central/index.aspx

A bed is about £25 a night. Shared accommodation, but if there's a few of you, you can book a room to yourself. Book early as these places fill up quickly in the summer.

People with children might prefer the St Pancreas youth hostel:

http://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/london/index.aspx

These hostels are run by the international youth hostel association, and are for people of any age - not just 'youths'. The theatre company I work at often puts visiting actors or trainees up in youth hostels as it's all we can afford, but we still want to get them a good bed.

Best wishes

There are also a whole bunch of non-HI (HI is the international youth hostel association) hostels with Hostelworld/Hostelbookers:

http://www.hostelworld.com/hostels/London
http://www.hostelbookers.com/result...strDestination=London&strsearchby=destination

Anything with a rating of over 80% on either site should be good. Its worth noting that the HI hostels aren't always the best - though the two suggested look pretty damn good, the London Central one is rated 88% with Hostelworld which is very very high.

Also in my experience people who aren't young do stay in hostels quite a bit - especially the HI affiliated ones.

On the note of affordable accommodation:

EasyHotel offers (extremely) small rooms starting at around £25 per room (which accommodates 2 people). Checking the three days from July 30th to Aug. 2nd the rooms was £34 - £39 per room per night:

We stayed at EasyHotel Earls Court two years ago, and even if 9 days is a bit much :)p) it should be adequate lodging for 2 for a weekend or so...

Gonna check our holiday schedule for August next week, but there should be no problem. It's more than enough if two of four people are at our department.

I still haven't decided how many days I need for shopping before that Saturday. :D

These look worth checking out - nice to have your own room, and the bed looks a bit better than a typical youth hostel bed. Had a look at the website, and it seems they offer no breakfast, no drinks, no food at all. Is that right?

The youth hostels I suggested earlier at least offer cooked breakfast (you pay a little bit extra), bar / cafe for a drink / chat, and free use of a decent kitchen for cooking your own food. And free wifi. (not £5 per hour like what EasyHotel charges (!))

Win some, lose some.

That's right. Not really a problem, though, as you have lots of places selling food and drinks at most hours near by. We usually had breakfast on our way to the tube station (Earls Court) in the mornings. Just get a bottle of water or something.

I also appreciate the en-suite bath with toilet and shower. I hate sharing that with the rest of the floor...

So how many of you guys already know others that are going and how many are like me reading this thread wondering who everyone is?

Be cool to come along btw, I'm only two hours from Liverpool Street, but I only know most of you by your names hogging all of the threads :p

Everyone who went last year/the year before. There may be photos/lists so you can see who went.

New people are definitely welcome and there look like there'll be a lot this year.

Yes from me!

(I asked the girlfriend and her reply was a frown - much like the frown I give her when she asks if we can go shopping together) :D

Just suggest that she could go shopping in London in the meantime. ;)
