The side reminds me of a blackberry for some reason.

I don't know if it has discussed before. Why did someone carry a non-functional phone to a bar? I can see if it's functional, it makes sense to bring it out and test it.

*sigh*

I like how someone can post a picture of a beautiful piece of computer equipment that looks refined without seams, almost futuristic.... then compare it to something that looks like it was screwed together in my basement. (mini screws and all)

Maybe its close to what the refined version will be like, but this ain't the final product.. no way Apple releases something like that exact picture.

Watch, Apple will just release the next iPhone without a big event. They will use the hype generated by this "lost" device and just start allowing for preorders on their website randomly one day.

Don't expect to be using a front facing camera for any kind of video/audio iChatting until the next generation of networks is in place. AT&T can't seem to handle webpage downloads most of the time - do you think millions of people trying to run live video/audio streams to each other is really gonna work?

Not gonna happen. Not with 3G. Not with AT&T. ;)

I hope to god you're right

As I said earlier this is a counterfeit. I saw this in Japan early Jan. in Akihabara. It might've been imported from China where they produce for apple. And it might have been a prototype. However this is definitely not a final Apple design.
If so then the iPhone team working on the phone has an extremely different vision of apple products. This looks like your ordinary Prada/samsung.
It's got too much lines and is too edged.
I believe it might even be a hoax put forth by apple itself.
What we'd call a dummy device.

This design that we're seeing is what is IMO a prototype.

Apple upon designing the first iPhone never disclosed the final design to AT&T until the very final stages. I understand that it was same scenario with the 3G. In addition we need to look at all the designs Apple has brought to their products;

Unibody Design for all Mac note books
Clean design with nominal viewable seams, iPhone 3G/S
Simple buttons that allow a number menu options
End to glass for their screens
Seamless bezels etc
All the Macs have curved surfaces; Underside of MB/MPB, Apple Displays, iMac. These are the designs that drive sales.

The only devices that do not are the Mac Mini, iPod Classic, Apple TV, Airport/Time Capsule. Products that are not undesirable but not as desirable as the former.

It would be in keeping with design philosophy of the Macs overall to have the next Gen iPhone look the same. The current iPhone design is a step forward from the original iPhone 2G which was not as elegant as the current 3G model, therefore many people have pointed out that this would be a step backward rather than a step forward with the images of the supposed 4th Gen iPhone. Apple is not a company that is likely to
take a step back. At least I really hope not.

There is one other important thing that people need to take note of, the current iPhone 3G/S design is a total winner. You only have to look at the number of companies that are literally copying the design. This could not be more complimentary to Apples execution/delivery of a beautifully well designed device with functions, which, at the time of its release beat the competition hands down. The proof is in the pudding and that is that the competitors are literally copying the design and the feel along with the functions of the iPhone! These are the same group of companies that have had decades to remain ahead but continued to provide bread and butter model phones and now all they're left to do is simply copy as their ability has died along with their true desire to innovate.

Good design is about an uncomplicated form. A beautiful device that performs a multitude of tasks with the minimal amount of steps and buttons to access the desired functions. The feel of a device if you will imagine is form of a single material (where we know that many materials must coexist with the form as if it were a single material). Imagine if you will the simple form of a pebble. Imagine holding it, feel its weight, its surface and admire its overall form. Now attempt to apply that to technology, that is the yard stick if you will that determines great industrial design. I'm certain Johnny Ive is always aware of this.

I really genuinely hope that this is indeed a prototype, that these images we're seeing are controlled leaks and that the actual 4th Gen iPhone is once again a marvel of industrial design. :apple:

iPhone 4G images

Very crazy, how all this gets leaked and talked about.

I thought it was a bit too boxy, but it kind of fits the look of the iPad. It also has a lot of the features people have been wanting (2 cameras, sim card, removable battery, camera flash). It also seems to be thinner overall.

I can understand how the boxy feel is a turn-off. On a smaller product like a phone, the rounded edges can be more elegant. I agree with some that maybe there are some final touches to the design.

One minor point that I'd like to say. Every iPhone I've owned (3), gets scratched on the metal edges of the screen. Every case (rubber, plastic) somehow scratches the metal. Dust gets under the soft cases, and the plastic itself seems to scratch the metal otherwise.

So, in a small way, I like that the screen goes practically flush to the edge of the phone...no brushed metal edges to scratch.

Again, that's pretty superficial, but, it's true!

Now thats what I was talking about in the thread last night about some better pictures and good angle shots! Its like someone took my advise for once... lol :D

I like it a lot more than I thought now that I have seen better pics of it. Now what we all want to know is what processor is gonna go in it and what other updates to the chip set are gonna be inside. I really hope its a step forward in every place and not just the core processor, like we have seen in the iPad. More RAM and Cashe please...

I plan on buying the new iPhone no matter what. :apple:

square edges

The square edges make sense if needing more space inside and especially since the design is thinner. Most people will end up protecting their iPhone with a cover so ergonomics will not count as much in that case (no pun intended). I wonder if this leak was on purpose???

Isn't it ironic that all the videos of the iPhone 4G are Flash-based

Ok, so where is 'non-Flash', Apple approved, html 5.0 version of the 4G video?

First of all, I love all the new features it offers, but design-wise, this can't be the final apple product. In fact, I gaurantee it's not the final. It doesn't have the clean apple look that apple's famous for. Not a horrible design, tho. But I know the final product is going to look drastically different than this. An iPhone with visible screws and replaceable battery? Puh-lease.

:apple:

Perhaps Steve Jobs finally realized that they went too far with "form over functionality" approach? This design does look more conventional and more convenient.

Sadly, because I like it, if this were really what the new iPhone was going to look like then these images would have been pulled a long time ago by Apple.

Remote wipe and location?

If Apple did the remote lock down or remote wipe thru MobileMe (or the iPhone Admin Toolkit), why cant they use the location service too to locate the device? unless they purposely leaked this prototype to the hand of outsiders??

i think Gizmodo's next step should contact GeoHotz to get a copy of jailbreaked OS4 beta and install on it. If that's the real iPhone 4G, then everything should be working, including the front camera. And we'll have a jailbroke iphone before the WWDC :D

What i like:
aluminum along the outside
flat back
flat black color (I hope they have white, too)
no more chrome bezel

What i don't like:
volume controls
seams along outside (hopefully this is only for the prototype to take it apart easier)

Design only. I'm not counting actual additions. IE: New mic, cameras, etc..

Obviously they wanted to wipe the phone clean before losing any more information, making it impossible to use the location services. Besides it's not being held hostage, if Apple wanted it back bad enough they would know where to find it.

The firmware is obviously incompatible since it's made for a different device. No one besides Apple has a build of the firmware for this device.

Very good point. Apple could have done a remote wipe and determined the location of the phone all at once. If they really didn't intend for it to be made public, they could have showed up at the location of the phone and asked for it back. If they expected an altercation, a paid duty cop could have handled it.

The law doesn't say "finders keepers". If you find stolen property, you should attempt to return it to the owner, if they can't be found for a certain period of time, the property becomes yours.

They could have also paid the finder/thief to keep it silent. If all Gizmodo paid this person was the rumoured $10K, Apple could have offered a similar "reward" for finding the phone and keeping it to themselves until the launch.

I'm convinced that this is 100% Apple's prototype (read the article, the proof is overwhelming), but I'm also increasingly convinced that Apple leaked it on purpose.

Yeah, those visible screws on the bottom have me perplexed. Very un-Apple like.

Please tell me you're joking?

I can't believe how many posts there have been in the various threads about the screws on the bottom.

The article at the beginning of this thread even shows a picture of a 3GS which has the same screws in the same place.
