feeble battery life

My Magic Mouse batteries have expired after four weeks of use at three or four hours per day. When the reading reached 20%, they gave up the ghost.

Overnight, with the computer shut down but the MM left on, there is no loss of power.

Perhaps Apple will consider giving all owners of the new iMacs a bumper set of lithiums or rechargeables + charger before discontent turns into action. The promise of four months life is potentially a trading standards issue.

Hi Folks.

I am starting to LIKE the magic mouse. Weird at first.

BUT I can not get it to run on ONE battery, as I've read it can do. :( I like to keep one rechargable IN and one READY FOR BACKUP. Plus, with two batteries in I don't like the weight of it as much.

Also - my first attempt to get it to work with NiMh batteries was a FAIL, though they were not fully charged. I'm charging them now and see how it goes.

same here. i used to like wireless, but i hate wasting time when the connection occasionally needs to be reestablished.

Incidently, I hate that too -- but the new mouse and keyboard have not had a reestablishing issue like the previous generation (yet!) ... I'm thinking they've improved something in the signaling.

Only the Mighty Mouse can run on a single cell. I used to do that too, to save weight. AFAIK, that's not the case with the Magic Mouse - it requires 2 cells.

When the original alkaline's die, I will be running hybrid NiMhs (same as I ran on my Mighty Mouse).

USB port usage

Um, there is the fact that it saves a USB port?? ;)

Dude it will only save a usb port if it uses bluetooth technology. It will still use a usb port for a receiver otherwise, and bluetooth is inferior to the ones with receivers.
Try Razer if you have some money to buy a cordless/corded mouse that works both ways.

In my experience the batteries always go quickly.

It depends really. I'll bet Apple are picking the max time with less usage. Not somebody that would be using the mouse 12 - 14 hours a day. I don't have a Magic Mouse yet but I roughly get just over 2 months with two Duracell double A's on my MX1100 roughly 12 - 14 hours a day. Only recently I've switched to Uniross 2700mAh rechargeables to see how they go. Wether that has anything to do with a dull grey icemat v2, I do not know.

Someone mentioned why do we need wireless?....because we can. It looks so much cleaner with a desk without wires. With Apple products being so clean and sleek looking, I wanted nothing more than to bring in wireless keyboard and mouse when I picked up my iMac.

It's not just about being tidy. I still haven't forgotten having to wave the mouse wire out of the road if I ran out of mouse space or it got in my road. It was always irritating having this cable getting dragged from using the mouse. As for the keyboard I would certainly say it's about looks. However I sometimes like to sit with my feet up and have my wireless keyboard on my lap with no cable getting pulled.

It's all about options and preferences which this is mine.

Well, I've been using the Magic Mouse for almost 3 weeks now....
It's actually pretty neat. I love the scrolling with Momentum.

81% battery after 19 days, computer in use every day.

If this keeps up, 3-4 months sounds like about it. Probably 3.

I'm thinking that I'll replace the Alkaline batteries with AA Lithiums.
Those seem to work great in my camera.

I've always had poor luck with those NiMh rechargeable ones.

Have Fun,
Keri

Seeing as you can take the battery cover off completely I would like to see a third party rechargeable battery pack, and charging cradle, that would be sweet. This is really the only thing that I miss from my old Logitech MX-Revolution.

Purchased Magic Mouse: November 13th 2009

Current Battery level: 18%

Today: Received low-battery warning at the log in screen.

=/

OK, just to let you know, all wireless apple products use built in bluetooth technology. They do not need any sort of receiver to use the devices. So in the long run they do save a usb port! Plus they don't look as cluttered!

i dont get the point of wireless really....i mean i hate dealing with batteries and the computer is right there to plug into....
I'm the same way for the most part.

Wired is always ready to go. No battery issues. That said, sometimes wireless is convenient as well.

For those with low battery life on your Magic Mouse, it might be as someone suggested that you mouse is turning on and off when you are not using it. I control my computer that I watch movies on with a BT mouse. I find it interesting to see it turn on when I haven't touched it. Vibrations from where ever can seem to activate it. With that in mind, I tend to turn off my BT mice when not in use to save battery power. YMMV.

Mine went 26 days on the original set of batteries. Expired on Nov 28th after daily use, not turned off via the power switch. Ordered a set of these that same day.

crossing my fingers for a wired magic mouse

I would like to see that option.

I used the Magic Mouse from October 29th until the batteries died on November 24th. It was always very jumpy and had terrible tracking. So I went back to a wired mouse.

I have now been using both the MM and keyboard for over a month. The first week I used the batteries that came with the units. They lasted about a week. I had some 10 year old recharge types around the house and put those in. I have had much better success with the time. My old batteries would only charge to about 75%. I am down about half now after a month.

I love the operation of the MM, but then again I had been using a 10 year old Kensington Trackball unit. I was having so much trouble with the trackball slipping all the time it was impossible to use. I never liked using a wired mouse because of the limited space of my under desk tray. I was constantly getting the wire tangled.

I feel the investment was well worth it, even if the batteries need to be recharged one every month or two. I have a couple sets of batteries so it only takes me a minute or so to change over.

Purchased 10/30, used all day from about 7 to 6pm on average and weekends. I am at 43% battery power. Mouse is never turned off.
I expect 30 days out of the batteries, clearly I have that and then some.

Almost identical here: got mine 10/30, similar usage - shows battery at 41% today.

Dern good advice there. To me, the wireless stuff is worth a little aggravation to get rid of cables, and for the environment if you use rechargeable nickel metal hydrate batteries. I don't have the exact brand in Matt's post but there are several companies that make them and they couldn't be simpler to use. The charger pack plugs directly into any outlet. You can charge two or four batteries at a time..I use two while the other two are charging. Saves a lot of money for me and is handier than always fartin' around with alkalines which you then have to dispose of.

Go green :D

Rich

On this note, while my battery life has been better than some reports, I bought this today. Thanks for the tip!

Magic Mouse doing OK over here so far....

4 weeks of daily use, 68% battery life remaining. Mouse remains "On", computer sleeps while I'm at work.

Right on schedule for 3 months, maybe 4 if I cool it a little on playing Zuma.

Yay!

Have Fun,
Keri

Well I spoke too soon. On Dec 1 it was at 43% and suddenly, with the same use as always, it is at 18%. Good thing I already bought the rechargeable ones linked a few posts above. Not that I can't use regular batteries but I'd like to see how well the rechargeable batteries do.

I'm at 72 after almost three weeks. I might go to a wired mouse anyway. I can't stand how uncomfortable it is. For some reason my hand gets all sore using it. I just plugged my trusty standard Dell mouse in and can feel the stress leaving my hand already. I like the flick scrolling, but not worth the hand fatigue.

which one of these AA batteries are low weight?

with AA batteries Magic Mouse is kinda of heavy, i am using wired mouse. If the weight is reduced i will go back to magic mouse.
