It's a 4GB disk image, the contents of which are copied to a new partition on your hard drive.

Why would they keep it around? They aren't deleting it just to make your life harder ...

Edit: Looked into it and I was going off bad info. The "Recovery" HD isn't really a partition (it is a disk image), and it isn't the entire installer DVD, just about 750MB worth.

Still, I wouldn't want a 4GB installer sitting around forever.

Why not, I never burned my Snow Leopard to an actual DVD. It sat as a DMG on an external hard drive for ages, until I finally made a bootable flash drive from it last week.

This would still be complicated in Windows. I don't think Apple could really make it any easier then what Disk Utility provides.

1. Select Destination
2. Select Source Image
3. Burn

Same process in Windows, more or less.

Get USB/DVD tool.
Select source. Select target.
Create bootable install flash drive.

I'm not exactly a computer guy. Does the disk matter if it is dvd-r or dvd+r? does it matter? thanks

Update only?

Correct me if I'm wrong. But isn't (Lion) just released as an update, not full version? I mean, even though it might be possible to burn it onto a disc, you won't be able to perform a clean install using the Lion disc on it's own, skipping snow leopard...?

Since Apple DVD supports both dvd-r and dvd+r, it does not matter. However, Apple DVD only supports cd-r. It can not read/write cd+r disks.

Such a burnt Lion startup DVD does not contain the Disk Utility tool. Right?

Messy...

I still think that the way they are doing this....just through the app store...is a tiny bit messy to say the least. I understand it saves money, it's the way forward and all that ....

BUT

Surely.. Jobs will come up with a way to clean install without having to prat around. It should be simple? "It Just Works" should apply and it don't!

I'm looking forward to see how it does though
:apple:

You make a very interesting point i was thinking this

Apple will allow you to re-download the Lion installer for free, as many times as you want, on as many different systems as you want, as long as you use the same Apple ID that you used for the initial $29.99 download.

This is just a shortcut to save you from having to re-download for each install. If you're shortchanging anyone it's probably only for the connection charges if any, it's not Apple.

so basically you're saying that i can install just one bought license in every machine on the planet! if each machine uses the same ID at the appstore to download lion installer. this is strange... and when i log into to appstore using other ID? will it validate my purchase? 'cause apple will know that i'm using Lion, but that account didn't bought it.

Question
So, you can make an OS X Lion Boot disc by copying that dmg file to a disk. Can I also install this dmg file on the macs of my family? We all have different iTunes accounts though. So, can they use my disk to install Lion or will they have to pay up too?

Awesome Floppy Humer

It will take three floppy er.... Sorry, I meant three licks to get to the center of a tootsie pop. Man are we getting old.

If I copy it to 5.25 floppies, how many will it take?

I've notched them, so they're double sided, if that helps.

you just need around 7000 of them, no big deal. I also prepared for this, finished notching all my floppies last night... wasn't so hard... just need to copy the installer and then i'm ready to upgrade my original 1984 Macintosh!... keep notching!

So questions that I didnt see the answer

1) Is I download it from MacAppstore, is my Itunes ID linked into the DVD?

2) Will the DVD allow me to install Lion Cleand or still need SL?

Thanks

1. I would think they've implemented some type of DRM to prevent everyone in the world from obtaining illegal copies from the interwebz torrent sites. My guess would be, to install Lion, you'll be required to validate your AppleID and it will check to see if you've made the purchase.

2. Read the first page?

Apple Supplying DVD to Volume Licence Customers

Hello,

Just had an interesting conversation with a representative in Apple UK's Volume Licence department.

They confirmed that a Lion Install DVD will be issued to Volume Licence customers by post.

Not what I'd expected or been led to believe previously. Might that mean that a Retail version may be available eventually?

Dan

None really. It's a superstition imported from the Windows world where it actually does speed things up because Windows slows down over time. ;)

No, it's a superstition based on all versions of OS X slowing down over time. That's a feature Apple copied from Windows.

I cracked up *big time* with this comment! thank you! That was so randomI tired to explain it to my wife...she just glared at me and swung her non nerd head back to the TV.

Oh well... I thought it was funny - thank you!

Ditto:D

I am currently downloading OSX Lion from the AppStore.

I can see in my User Profile Appstore folder the file mzm.stuhjljp.pkg.

When this has finally downloaded how do you show the package contents of a pkg, as the option isn't there on Command Click....

Or does it change into an .app in Application afterwards?

I want to be able to burn this to either DVD or FlashDisk once downloaded.

Have just installed Lion. The pkg file gets moved as a 3.76GB app to the /Applications folder.

I copied that file elsewhere, and will be trying to install it on my second MBP. I will update back how it went.

EDIT: The app is named "Install Mac OS X Lion.app", no fancy-shmancy naming here.

Thanks for that, my connection is crap at the moment. I have got 1/2GB in 3 hours, going home shortly and back on my 40MB connection so should be a bit faster.
