both are AUO screens right?

gamma, go to sys preferences, then displays, then color tap, then color lcd profile, then calibrate, then you will see the option.

hey i have a question

i'm planning to buy a 13" this saturday at the apple store...is it possible for them to actually get a certain lcd monitor that i want?

is the lcd monitor type specified on the box? what should i look out for?

The only way to find out is open the box which they won't allow you to do.
and even they can, which number you are looking for?

Correct. You cannot choose. However, you can ask to turn the system you get on in the store to check the monitor out. Unfortunately, after opening the system to check, you'd probably have to pay a restocking fee for another one anyways.

I don't think it really is a lottery. They all seem to be excellent screens. I have counted three different screens so far:

- LG-Philips LP133WX3-TLA1 (~90% of the people get this)
- AU Optronics B133EW07
- Chi-Mei (not sure of the model number; color profile shows 9CA0)

My previous MBP had the LG-Philips screen, and the new one has an AU Optronics screen. Both are excellent.

I measured the contrast ratio on my AUO screen, and it is at least 1:640, and probably a little better (in a completely dark room). I think the LG/Philips has a little better contrast, but I never measured it.

9CA1 = AU Optronics

To OP, it maybe a good idea to include the panel vendor. So far we have:

9C8C (?)
9C9E (Samsung)
9C9F (LG-Phillips)
9CA0 (Chi Mei)
9CA1 (?)
9CBD (LG-Phillips)

For people with 9C8C and 9CA1 panels, can you please run SwitchResX and check the vendor info?

9CA1 = AU Optronics

I had the 2.4GHz uMB "CE" previously, but sold it due to the unimpressive screen (9C8C), which was also made by AUO. I can honestly say that the 9CA1 by AUO on these 13" MBP are definitely an improvement. Actually, I think they are really good. I placed my 13" MBP, right after I bought it, next to the Air, and they were identical in display quality. Images that have a lot of blacks don't look like photo negatives anymore, and brighter images are not washed out. Viewing angles are better as well. With my previous uMB, I found myself having to tilt the screen up and down a lot to compensate for the bad viewing angles, and from left to right.. images became yellow tinted. This is not the case with the new 13" MBP.. I can now keep my screen in one position.. even when watching a Netflix streaming movie. I've only used the built in display color calibration, and just set it to tv gamma. I found that for my uses.. this was sufficient enough. Colors are crisp and not washed out. I work right next to the 5th Ave NYC Apple store, and I've noticed that all these new screens are a much improvement from the first version. My advice to people who are worried about which screen make they might end up getting.. I wouldn't worry about it. :)

To the OP, the 9C8C panel is actually on the late 2008 Unibody MacBook, not MacBook Pro. You should remove it from the list. I had that screen on my Unibody MacBook.

9cbd

Just purchased a 13" 2.26Ghz MacBookPro From my local Best Buy (Cranston RI) and they honored the Educational Discount in store and FREE 8GB Ipod offer! :) Best of all, I received a 9CBD Screen!! It looks amazing! HUGE differance over the unibody 13" Macbook. I will test for neon colors today and post back. This is my first MAC and its AMAZING!!! I have owned 5 laptops in the last 7 years and this is by FAR the best. 500gb HD and 4GB of ram being installed today :) SO glad i waited instead of buying a 13" 2.4 Unibody in April like I planned.:D

Is there any releation between the processor speed and the display manufacturer? I saw a 2.26 GHz machine in the store, with a 9C9E display. This display looked fine in the store, BTW.

I noticed when I scroll through google(in windows on firefox) using the scroll bar at the right I get purple text also. If I use the scroll wheel it appears to stay blue. I wonder if the way you scroll has an effect on what the colors will look like. Macbook's use a smooth style scroll just like the bar scroll. Maybe somebody can test this on a Mabook with a scroll wheel. I'm at work now, so I can't test it. Maybe a stupid theory, just thought I would put it in my thoughts.

i went to the store today and checked two 2.26G 13'uMBPs. The lcd are all 9ca1.

so if the screen is faulty and need to exchange it, there is a restocking fee??

btw how would i check which lcd i have?

just got mine in the mail, 9C9F, and it looks good so far. will do some thorough testing

Panels at Apple Store

Stopped by an Apple Store a few days ago and checked out about 7 MacBook Pro 13's. Something like five were LP133WX3-TLA1 (9C9F) screens and the rest were B133EW07 V0 (9CA1).

I took my 13 UMB 2.4 to compare side-by-side. I spent about 20 mins going between the Macs trying to compare them to mine and ran the shell command to pull up the model numbers, which is:

ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

My screen is the AUO B133EW04 V0

Both of screens in the MBP's were MUCH nicer than mine when it came to viewing angles and uniformity of blacks. I pulled up my photos on my and the MBP machines and used the nature desktop of the earth. The blacks were consistent across the screen on the MBP's. My screen gets gray at the bottom.

With the glossy screens and all the reflections in the Apple Store it's damn near impossible to get a good look at the screens.

anybody happy with their 9C9E?

mine has a little bit of that blue/purple issue, but when I re-calibrated in expert mode, I shifted the white balance to about 600, made the picture look a little warmer...looks pretty good. I don't really want to return it unless the other panels are really that much better.

Other 9C9E owners please chime in.

I think my is good, I dont see any blue/purple issues, but I might be blind it looks good to me..... The only thing is the lowest brightness seems a bit low to me, but it might be my lighting in the room, but other ways it seems to be good. Can you please tell me the procedure for re-calibration. Thanks

9C9F a little too warm?

Just got mine yesterday....i do love the display but it seemed to be on the yellow/orange side. It was compared to my friend who got the 15" and his looks moire true to life colour wise..not sure which screen make he has, i have the 9C9F.

thought that it could be the expanded gamut but not sure...
anyone calibrate theirs yet?

my experience with the screen is nothing as noted on this thread.

I have the 9C9E - Samsung Panel. It's very very bad, blue/purple issue and white looks like yellow/grey. I will send back to Apple.

Left: MacBook Pro 13" (Mid 2009)
Right: MacBook Unibody (Late 2008)

Why didn't you just calibrated it?

I have the 9C9E too. I agree with the calibration it comes with is bad, but with some minor corrections it looks very nice. At least to me. I have the 13 inch unibody macbook also and compared to that screen it looks wonderful. I'm very happy with it.

How can I calibrate the display? And what can I do with the blue/purple issue?

Oh, I thought you already sent it back.

systems preferences>displays>colors>Calibrate

What I did was open a webpage(it was a colorful page) on my imac and tried to make them look exactly alike. Every time I used apple's walk through guide it didn't come out right.
