Another iPhone OS is terrible and that's no joke rant.

Of cause it's going to be iPhone OS, most likely iPhone OS 4. It is so obvious.

If iPhone OS 4 is going to be on this, it had better be so awesome that they should have versioned it 5. I'm serious. I can't imagine a real computer using i"DRM"Phone OS version anything. I could rant all night about how it's a Nintendo-like OS that is sorta fun when you need that, like when your waiting on a meeting or in the toilet. ;) Also, for a mobile media device, and it being a mac, the iPhone should really have a full edition of iTunes (hello:signature software there) on it. I could rant all night I tell ye, but I can wait 24 hours.

Who said anything about this being a "real computer"?
What is a real computer? Many people only use a real computer for browsing the internet and watching dirty videos.

So its not what you want, who cares? Don't buy it

Everyone just needs to calm down it's gonna run iPhone 4.0 which we know nothing about yet!

I'm sure I'm not the first to say this but...

My fearless prediction is that it won't run "iPhone" OS 4. Apple will take this opportunity to rename the OS something else since it is now runs on the iPhone the iPod Touch and the whatever they name the new device.

There wasn't anything in this "leak" that wasn't already known by the well-informed public. Basically, it's going to be a large-screen iPod touch with a special focus on e-reading/publishing.

IMO, the hardware won't be that special, but you can be certain that Apple will introduce a new service that will offer all kinds of digital publications for purchase, downloading and streaming though the iTunes Store (think of it as a nearly unlimited library in the internet "cloud").

No doubt, Steve is pondering his legacy and he wants this product to be remembered as the first practical and accessible knowledge navigator (let's face it, the display on the iPhone/iPod touch is just too small to fulfill that promise). Add into that the entertainment factor (music, movies, TV, games, etc.) and you'll have a really useful and desirable product. A mobile device that will give you always-on access to much of what is known by the human race. That's the reason Steve Jobs has said that it will be one of the most important announcements of his career.

Thats a possibility.... though there is a lot of brand recognition in iPhone OS. If you rename it say OS X Touch .... then people won't know if things are compatible. You might think I'm crazy, but look at half the idiotic posts in this thread taking up the last 20 pages....

[Edit] Be glad Steve doesnt equip his computers with cup holders ;)

You mean iOS :)

("iPhone OS" will be no more)

It's called OS X. The operating system for Mac and Apple TV is called "Mac OS X", the operating system for iPod Touch, iPhone and probably an Apple tablet is called "OS X".

BTW the percentage of code in common between Mac OS X and OS X is about 85% and growing.

If it is iphone/ipod UI I am NOT buying.

If it is a version of OS X I can control and install my own apps without being forced to go through apple for everything then I will buy.

But I already have an iphone that forces me into a telco and into itunes...not going to get raped again...either os X or screw you

I want one thing and one thing only: the ability to control my Mac Pro via the tablet/slate over wifi and 3G; doesn't matter if I need a 3rd party app. I'm a designer, and I'd be able to go play poker and still make minor changes to designes and send new files to my customers! I think there is already a solution for the iPhone, but the screen is too small, IMO.

It's got to be a touch-based OS, like the iPhone OS. The iPhone OS is very powerful, and can do things like multi-tasking, Apple has just not enabled the API to allow this yet. This might change in iPhone OS 4.0

I don't think we'll see iPhone OS 4.0 on both the tablet and the iPhone/iPod Touch. The tablet will most likely be getting some variant of OS X that's more similar to a touch based UI like the iPhone. I can't imagine just using an iPhone on a 10" screen, the input would be terrible. Completely different proportions to worry about, placement of "buttons" etc would be drastically different on the two form factors.

It probably won't be a real computer like you think of a tablet today. Everything has pointed towards it being more like a giant iPod than a keyboardless MBA. Not to mention Apple likes to give you the "child" version of software. The easier the better.

But this guy just dropped iPhone OS, he didn't say anything that we already didn't know. He simply was just trying to say that they'll be compatible with each other (his e-books that is). That's not news, thats just common sense.

so i guess this means no new i5 MBP's for the time being :(

Well the dumbass guy who made the announcement doesnt even work for apple. Hes just the owner of some fancy book publisher who is supposedly helping apple get some content inline for the tablet.

So.. we dont know what else is being announced tomorrow, we have no idea if there are going to be new MBPs. or new cinema screens, or what! lol.. Apple has kept that in a very safe proverbial vault..

When would I grab my laptop and start coding in XCode, then think.... hmmmm, I'd rather code on a tablet? Ummm.... NEVER! When would I open a word processor on my laptop, and think... hmmm.. I'd rather do this on a tablet? Ummm... NEVER!

not too long ago computer animations were created by using a keyboard to type in the coordinates and colour values of each and every pixel. (eg john whitney); now we have particle generators which can be controlled by midi, even by voice control.

applications change and are updated, often inspired by visionary new hardware.
maybe one day soon you'll be dictating your text document, and just using the odd 3 finger swipe on a tablet, and you might be thinking: "remember the bad old days when i needed a mouse and keyboard for this, and had to sit at a desk. maybe not...

i'm just hoping that this tablet gives rise to new ways of dealing with data and hardware and computing, the iphone changed a lot for me (eg. check email while taking coffee in a foreign city, rather than searching for a seedy internet cafe to check details of upcoming gigs while on tour, controlling my video software from anywhere inside the building with the iphone over VPN, rather than sitting at my laptop all day during exhibition)

I don't think we'll see iPhone OS 4.0 on both the tablet and the iPhone/iPod Touch. The tablet will most likely be getting some variant that runs on the same base as the iPhone OS. I can't imagine just using an iPhone on a 10" screen, the input would be terrible. Completely different proportions to worry about, placement of "buttons" etc would be drastically different on the two form factors.

You are the second person who seems to not understand what the hell an OS is. Why is it in your mind you think the OS restricts screen size so that everything on the iPad would be a scaled up version of the iPhone? Why is it you think because its the same OS all the applications would be identical?

I swear, the ignorance on this forum.... An OS does not a set of applications make!!!

I agree completely. With 95% of textbooks to be available on the tablet it will be instantly profitable before you even factor in the demand that the device will have on mac fan boys and other toy/gadget people like myself. Every school in the country could get rid of physical textbooks overnight. Think about that. Students wouldn't need to carry heavy backpacks all over their school and to and from school. They would simply need a small tablet that could replace much of the clutter that they are forced to carry 99% of the time while they are in school.

I could even see schools investing in the device and charging students a lease type fee for the year. This would help students who may not be able to afford the MSRP that Apple will charge to be able to afford a subsidized lease price instead. Also this would allow students to take notes on their tablet, even highlight selections on the tablet device. I mean come on you know there is going to be a highlight feature on this device. Where as students now are generally not allowed to make alteration to their physical textbooks.

I really think Jobs and Apple were smart to go out and get McGraw-Hill publishing on board. This product, if done correctly - and you know it will be, could revolutionize how students learn and the means in which the information they receive is transmitted to them. It's a win win for Apple. Like I said this deal with McGraw-Hill allows this device to become instantly profitable. Mega profitable in fact. And that is before you factor in the devices many other appealing attributes. Perhaps schools could even get rid of lockers. Imagine in the near future students carrying one device to school. No pens, no paper, no books. I could see it.

What puzzles me is the fact that for the last few keynotes we knew 90% about what the product did at least a day before it came out.

A. Was that done purposely by Apple so that the speculation for this event would be even greater?
B. Has Apple cracked down even tighter on security?
C. Is this a lot less than we think it is? (literally a giant iphone)v
D. the last few keynotes were flukishly revealed ahead of time?

There have been rumors circulating around a tablet for over seven years now. I really don't think it'll just be a a larger iPod touch.

I'm thinking this may have been a PR stunt.

The reason I'm thinking that, is I'm pretty sure Apple would have put about everyone under NDA's and I"m sure he wouldn't want to risk legal/liability issues etc.

Is it just me or did he say "the Apple tabloid... um tablet..."

Possible ridiculous product name ? :|

Colorful and cheap. Full of ads?

this tablet needs to be the STAR TREK lcars padd.

Input via voice, touch and stylus. Reconfigurable displays/layouts
