Been there done that, owned Droid and Incredible. Back to my iPhone and Blackberry. Happy as can be. Will get new iPhone and Berry when they come out. These are the best IMHO.

He's not, but a lot of us think the same way, which is why I propose we have a new sub-forum/forum:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/915303/

I just think it would fix a lot of this animosity.

Good idea.
Its all personal choice and whatever one decides its up to them.
But to come to an iphone forum just to announce that you switched to a Droid is pointless IMO.

I might get a Nexus One when I upgrade from the 3GS, I'll wait and see what the new iPhone's like first when it's announced properly.

If OP is such an Apple fanboy turned Android fanboy now, why is he a newbie to MR? Anyone who had any interest in Apple products would have been a member here a long time ago. I smell troll.

Because those limits are set assuming most people wouldn't even come close to using it all. If everyone used up their limit the network would crawl to a stand still. This is also the reason they don't allow tethering with the iPhone. There are already so many iPhone users out there that are using up the majority of their network bandwith. Imagine if they all decided to tether their laptop to their phone as well? I'm sorry but I'd prefer my cell phone to operate at it's current speeds and pay for internet access on my computer seperately. Now before this thread goes on any further, why don't you do a search about tethering? I'm sure you will find hundreds of threads complaining about the same thing just as you are.

One of the problems for us European's is that our 3G networks are way advanced. This policy is set by US demand. In America the 3G networks are much newer and less advanced. In britain, there is enough capacity to handle tethering. You are assuming that bandwidth demand is significantly higher that by using a WAP, which is isn't really...

This reason why it is important to be is that I have an arthritis that makes using small devices problematic... Thus mu perspective is based on my real need...

I do not see why UK policy should be set my the American infrastructure (or lack thereof)...

your logic is flawed. I've been a longtime apple customer (not quite a fanboy) but I've only been here for a little while - as compared to other members.

While MR is a large forum, that doesn't mean it includes everyone who likes apple.

You have to understand, most Americans never visit or live in other countries so they speak from their own experiences.

Speaking of which, which part of Edinburgh are you from? I used to live beside Ocean Terminal :)

As mentioned by ChazUK, you can get the free PDAnet app and it allows tethering via bluetooth.

If you root your phone, you can download the Wireless Tether (created by Google themselves) from the marketplace. That would allow wireless tethering. I have this app and it works flawlessly on my Nexus One.

So basically what you're saying is that the admins should enforce a strictly pro-Apple and anti-everythingelse policy and prohibit forum members from sharing their experiences with each other if those experiences can in any way be construed as anything but pro-Apple. Is that about right? I have to say, I'm glad you're not in charge here. ;)

Not really. I think everyone in this forum realizes that Android is a viable competitor to Apple but take a look at the iPhone section. There are dozens of Android threads. This is not an Android forum. Some people are posting legit questions and info but it is pointless to post on an Apple forum that you switched to Android because it is only going to start a flame war.

My wife owns a Droid and I frequent some Android forums. iPhone threads are few and far between there. Starting a separate section of the forum for comparisons of other phones would allow people to post/troll there.

The iPhone sells to more than just Apple fans (fortunately for Apple).

With tens of millions of iPhones and iPod touches sold, I would even bet that the majority of new owners don't own a Mac, nor were previously big Apple fans.

If you just bought your first Ford Mustang, you could be new to Ford forums and probably not even like other Fords :)

Good idea. Its all personal choice and whatever one decides its up to them. But to come to an iphone forum just to announce that you switched to a Droid is pointless IMO.

Maybe. Hmm.

Question: If a well known Apple fan here, such as yourself, were suddenly to fall in love with another brand, would you just disappear without telling anyone here?

I doubt it. Don't you think everyone else here would want to know why you switched? I would bet that you'd want to explain yourself.

Okay, so shouldn't everyone have that privilege? Or do you think that only the most common posters can talk about what they like? I say that anyone should be able to, whether they post a lot or not.

Apple has some nice products, but paying $199 for a laptop with an old slow 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo seems like a major rip off to me. Esp because Intel is discontinuing the C2D later this year.

Sounds like a good deal to me, You can't even get a netbook with an atom processor for $199 :D

Thanks...

If you wanted to tether, give PDANet a go.

As for syncing, I sync all my computers to Google and my Nexus 1 to google. It pretty much syncs like this:

Nexus One <----> Google <--->Mac/PC

All working fine for me. :p

All roads seem to we leading to this little application, so it looks like PDAnet is the way to go.... out of interest how do you 'root' your phone? I am not sure what this means, I know in Unix, root, it a file structure handle? is this the same analogy?

When did the forums become a blog for members?

@kdarling: I think making a forum for the Android, Pre, whatever posts would be a great idea. Most of us come to the iPhone forums to hear about the iPhone. We DON'T mind, contrary to the OP's opinion, hearing negatives about the iPhone, but I think we do mind having to hear about other phones over and over again. We get it.

So, having the mods move these kind of threads where they're welcome would really help. I'd. Imagine the trolls would lose interest as well.

This makes so much sense it won't happen.

This is the way that adults communicate. When they find something new and interesting, they tell each other about it.

Adults also read the headers of sub forums and post in the appropriate section. Last time I checked, when I go to an iPhone forum I don't immediately think, "There it is, that's where I can post about my android phone!"

So, if everything you own isn't made by Apple, you're a troll? Well, I have a few PCs, maybe I'm now a troll. I might not upgrade to the new iPhone... Does this make me a troll too?

Not everyone on an Apple forum has to be complete fanboys and have the shiny fruit on absolutely everything they own.

lets just clear a few things up:

1. Member since 2006, regular visitor, but I don't post much...

2. I'm not sure having just purchased an HTC Desire and quite liking it makes me an Android fanboy...

3.Why am I justifying myself to you, you have only been a member since 2007, and therefore don't have anything relevant to say (by your own logic...)

4. To all those that want this moved or deleted... is the fact that the iPhones shortcomings have caused someone to change to something else really not a relevant issue in the iPhone story? It is ultimately about where the iPhone falls short after all!

5. I think the title says alot... If you don't want to read about it, click elsewhere... Don't campaign for it to be moved somewhere that you don't have to look at it and can pretend that it doesn't exist.

I have a been in some Central Asian countries recently who have a similar attitude to freedom of expression...

If you don't want to read about posts that have issues with your thread, then don't read them, as well as any threads "campaigning" to have your thread moved. The same freedom of expression you espouse applies, doesn't it?

However, freedom of expression doesn't go for double posting, at least not in the MacRumors "totalitarian" regime (tongue in cheek about the totalitarian aspect). Don't double post. You've been here since 2006, right? You should know better. If not, in the future, go to edit, and then add anything you want to add to your previous posts.

Like I said... I don't post that often... Sorry about my lack of understanding of forum etiquette...

Well Said OP! Im gonna keep my iphone for a bit longer...But i may move to other forums, Theres a real distinct whiff of Elitism (mixed with sour grapes) in these forums lately.

in case anyone missed it the OP clearly stated that he had enjoyed and championed its unique abilities to others in the 3 years he had with the iphone. Why tear him down?

enjoy your new device matey

Whoo boy, probably getting into trouble by posting but...

mike07905 --- thanks for the post. Like you, many of us original Iphone (iPhone hehe) people are indeed faced with a serious choice as our contracts run out.

Many of us own other Apple equipment, and lets face it, most of us are techno-crazy, if not savvy. I personally like the best equipment, it saves a lot of time. A phone that can run multiple apps, tether my laptop to the internet etc etc is a pretty important tool --- two things which, you cannot get on the Iphone (iPhone) today without "going against the man" and jailbreaking.

So, please, post away... and if it's too uncomfortable, open a new thread on your experience in the MBP forum under the title "Tether with Android or Iphone (iPhone) --- My experiences"

Anything new and shiny is always better... probably one reason I change phones so frequently. Sometimes the shine comes off pretty quickly.
