Update from my last conversation with Apple support:

There will be a carrier update soon to fix the issue. It is caused by an incompatibility between the current carrier version and the new iPhones, but only for some operators. I am on Sky, which is O2 in reality.

Another symptom I noticed is when toggling from 4G VoLTE Off to 4G VoLTE On, I get a message stating that This mobile network has not been certified by the carrier for VoLTE on iPhone. The support analyst stated that this was linked to the issue but I’m not sure how much it is a factor.

No timescales on when to expect a carrier update, and I can’t be arsed to spend time on the phone complaining to Sky, going over all the issues again, to get a date for the update.

Blimey, another one already, it’s not been long since the 39.1 that dropped around the time of iOS 13.2. Don’t think I’ve ever seen carrier updates so quickly.

It would be nice to have it fixed, and it definitely should be, but as long as my LTE works without VoLTE enabled I can cope, 3G would be horrible to have to go back to. Still, this’ll all be a distant memory once 5G gets here, which should be about, oh, 4 or 5 years here :p

I’m still on v39.0 so you’ve got me worried now. I’ve not been prompted to update it and if 39.1 does not fix it, I really hope it’s 39.2 on its way!

I take it you’ve gone into the About section (wile connected to cellular) to see if there’s another update waiting?

But yeah, I’m hoping there’s another update before long. I’ve been supplying logs and various other information to Apple for going on a couple of weeks regarding this. So I have a feeling there's definitely an issue, otherwise I think we would have stopped by now.

‘Yep. About 300 times at last count, out of desperation, and also the suspicion that that was the cause all along. We are left in the lurch still. I’m over a month in to ownership of the 11 Pro, and paying for 2 phones while they sort this out. I’m not expecting any compensation but we really should get something as an apology for this **** show.

How to start the day with the 11 Pro: Make phone call. Hear the other party say hello? hello? a couple times while I scream "can you hear me now" into this piece of crap. Beep beep beep, call failed.

What a mess. This phone is absolute garbage.

Wow, you’re really having a worse time than me. I’m with EE and disabling VoLTE at least let’s my iPhone work normally, albeit without VoLTE calls, but I can live without that for now.

If I remember rightly from my O2 days though, that’s not an option, well it wasn’t last time I was a customer. It was either 3G only, or 4G with VoLTE only.

It sure is an option.
Not for AT&T folks apparently (or, using AT&T-specific iPhone models?)--on my 11 Pro Max (AT&T Carrier version 39.1) the only LTE-specific option I can toggle is "Enable LTE".

Side note--LOL 3G is an option on your phone? On my phone there is no 3G option; turning off LTE puts my phone in 4G mode. Isn't 3G supposed to be phased out by 2022 at the latest? I know that AT&T has shut down their 3G network in most--if not all--parts of the U.S.; heck my mom had to go buy a more *modern* phone because her RAZR 3G flip phone stopped working due to it no longer being able to find a 3G network to connect to. To be fair, AT&T did give her advance notice that this was going to happen so it's not as if she was caught completely by surprise.

Probably some differences between UK and US providers but I have 3G and even 2G still listed as option on Sky/O2.

I would hate that, obviously it’s different here in the UK, but I’m really glad (most of) our providers have kept the old networks up and running.

When I’m up in the north of Scotland, doing some rambling and hillwalking. I’m glad that, despite the lack of 4G or even 3G, there’s still (for now at least) the good old ancient 2G network in case of emergencies.

Spoke too soon. Call just dropped
That's terrible. I had two dropped calls today and another where it faded out into oblivion (I'm on 13.2). I am seriously considering another phone this year and then returning to Apple next year once they sort out their bugs.

I wouldn't hold your breath that the iPhone 12 and Qualcomm 5G modem are going to be perfect and bug free either. Apple has had plenty of buggy Qualcomm devices over the years as well that dropped calls and lost signal out of the blue. Such as:

I have had a few intermittent issues with previous iPhones - I’ve had every iPhone since the 4S, not counting the XS - I skipped that one. The issues were all relatively minor, bugs happen. This is the first year that my phone has been completely unreliable and essentially, garbage. I’m willing to try next years phone - I don’t want to switch - but this one is costing me time and affecting my work. I can’t hold out forever - I need a phone.

I’m an Apple fanboy myself but I can’t go on like this month after month hoping my issues are fixed in some update. I don’t like android but I would expect that a note or pixel would at least be able to make a damned phone call.

I hear ya. Same here - I'm an Apple fan and have been using the iPhone since the iPhone 3G. I've had plenty of issues over the years including the "coma" issue with the iPhone 4, "no service" issue with the iPhone 7 (Verizon users seemed to be the only ones impacted and I am a Verizon user), XS that needed frequent toggling of airplane mode to restore data connectivity, etc.

Knock on wood, I haven't had any issues with my iPhone 11 Pro and I've had it since launch day. I *did* drop a random call to a landline with full bars of signal at my home a day or two ago, but I'll just chalk it up to a fluke at this point.

Well see

Modem firmware updated again. 11 Pro; no carrier update on Verizon.

1.02.18 - 13.2.2

The previous modem versions are below...

1.02.14 - 13.2
1.01.19 - 13.1.2
1.01.17 - 13.1
1.00.06-6 - shipped / 13

They’re really working on that modem firmware. Seems they know it’s not reliable and has problems.

“‘lose cellular service AFTER a call” - A bit strange they word it like that since the issue is losing cellular during a call.

Also, Apple told me it would be resolved with a carrier update. Since updating to 13.2.2, it has stayed at 39.0.

Oh well. Nothing to lose in trying it out!

Upgraded to 13.2.2. and signal bars are still raging. Changing from one to all four random while I lie in my bed.

I’m done with this POS. Lost signal for like 20 seconds (not just a dropped call) in an area that always has 100% full signal. Not sure what I’m switching to, but I just can’t take it anymore.
