All I want is an improved notification system. The way iOS handles notifications now is ridiculous.

I couldn't agree more

That would just clutter up the lock screen and have too much information.

If you could pick and choose what is info is shown, that should alleviate that problem. I don't care about email or voice mail messages, but if I could get time, weather, sms, and my schedule I'd be ecstatic.

The hardware 'section' is pure WIN :D

here's my two cents

iPhone 5:
-dual core 1.2ghz (I am confident that Apple could pull off a 1.2GHZ processor with minimal impact on power consumption.)
-1024mb RAM (768MB is too un-Apple like of a number.)
-full HD retina display (Good point, did not think that one all the way through)
-8mp rear camera w/ flash (Higher MP and better sensor, should have been more specific)
-3mp front camera w/ flash (Narcissistic people such as myself who enjoy HQ pics of themselves)
-similar form factor w/ fixed antena design
- brighter display (maybe OLED) (OLED is the future weather Jobs thinks it is or not.)
- 128gb size option (I meant to put 64GB, minor mistake, not sure how that happened)
- improved battery (Improved battery has been a feature introduced in all new iPhone models)
iOS 5:
-wireless printing (Just learned that this is introduced in iOS 4.2)
-wireless sync (Apple supported would be better than paying for a crappy cydia app)
- faster JavaScript in safari
- dynamic icons
- more landscape ( like iPad is currently but for iPhone )
- faster loading camera Is it not fast enough? (Good enough is not what apple is known for)
- crash reporter w/ reason for crash
- diagnostic mode
- greater customization (lock screen text, etc)
- smaller footprint (500mb is way to big for a mobile os) (What about Snow Leopard. More features, faster performance and smaller size)
- faster start up time

thats coming in 4.2

SMS/Messaging Features
One of the most excited features, at least in my opinion, is the ability to customize SMS (Text) Tones for individual contacts. This is something that should make use of ringtones a lot more, and there are a TON in Cydia if you haven't notice or are too lazy to make your own. There have been apps in the past to allow this, but now with 4.2 we get a step closer to actual custom tones for texts. Your still limited to the defaults, but I'm sure a winterboard theme will allow you to replace the audio.

There has also been the addition of a shortcut button within a Text Message to initiate a FaceTime call, which makes it alot easier than exiting out, and locating your contact in the FaceTime/Phone app. A nice little addition.
What's even more needed is custom email alerts. Got 3 iPhone friends with you and you never know who's iPhone is going off. Ridiculous.

My improvements.
Same retina display, (maybe oled backlight)
slightly faster processor.
Lock screen utilised.
a square home button closer to the bottom allowing more screen size.
Dedicated camera button (You can not turn on the camera from this button. You must open the app, as when i had a dedicated camera button on an older phone it always opened the camera unexpectly and took photos in my pocket.)
Better speakers for ipod etc and a better ear speaker.
Curved design again and the square design is crap on the iphone 4 because it doesnt sit in your hand well.
Sim tray on top again.
Headphone jack at the bottom.
2 speakers for watching youtube (ipod etc) so you hear it from both ends of the phone.
Stereo sound quality (louder speaker without distortion).
User interface made like mac osx with the folders on the springboard. (see attached photo for example)
Make it so the folders have no app limits. so i can have 40 games in 1 folder if i want.
Keep the black and white theme, its not a toy its a phone, no need for red black orange green blue purple.
Better front camera with flash.
8mp camera with quad led flash for the back.
Facetime is gay, video calls so you can talk to anyone on a cameraphone for a video call.
Faster startup and shut down.
Unique battery saving technology and lithiom ion battery (like in macbooks)
So you can set how long you need it to last for in the ui and the phone will make power cuts etc to make sure you last the day so for example if you forget to charge and only have 30% battery and need it to last 8 more hours. select 8 hours and the phone will do its best to utilise power, backlight brightness and backlight timer to save battery.
budget 16gb, ($350AUD) moderate 32gb ($450AUD), extreme 50gb ($550AUD)
100gb ($700AUD)
Antanne fixed and bigger allowing for better reception in remote areas.
Telstras tick approval for it.
Custom SMS sounds.
Ability to delete, rename and add new songs from your iphone and when you sync it automatically adjusts on your computer (ratings etc etc).
inbuilt fm tuner for cars.
Bluetooth that works for any device so i can recieve a song from a friend with a htc or droid etc.
Like others have said kill all multi task apps.
remove the stocks and itunes or whatever you dont use and hide them directly on the phone.
Contact name input made easier.
Safari updated (always seems to lag to open pages and seems to lock up the phone)
an extra 1.5cm on screen for easier texting for people with larger fingers.
a screen that doesn't scratch easily, the new glass is shithouse.
better notfications that dont allow people to read half of your message on the home screen.

Thats all for me :)
Not saying i dont love my iphone now but i think apple is falling behind and is more worried about how cheaply they can make it to get max profit then providing people with up to date features, like come on video calling was around 4-6 years ago.

iPhone 4 currently costs ~$190 to build according to iFixIt. Give or take a few bucks. On the contrary a Blackberry Torch costs ~$195 to build. Add in the fact that the torch has a weaker processor, much less battery life, and a 3 inch touch screen, its no wonder the torcch had a sale after 3 days. I can see the iPhone manufacturing cost raising to at the most $200 in the next revision. Either way Apple is making a great phone while also making a significant killing profit wise. I still cannot comprehend on the fact a BB Torch costs more to make than an iPhone 4.

Couldn't find the data on iPhone 4, but Apple paid Foxconn $244 for every 3GS they made. Add 3G and other patent royalty fees, packaging, shipping, marketing, R&D, and I would say Apple makes a profit of around $100 per phone.

If you go by tradition of Apple then one would think we would have a new model by June/July.

Now you need to think of whether you like the model available now or would simply want to upgrade after anyway.

Apple has been doing yearly refreshes in June/July since launch in 2007. It could hypothetically change, but due to the current status of those "sources close to the project" news people are getting it's still looking at Summer 2011 for the next on target.

iPhone release: June 2007
iPhone 3G Release: July 2008
iPhone 3GS: June 2009
iPhone 4: June 2010

Out of curiosity, what would those people who are waiting for the updated iphone do, if the July comes and there is no update? (i.e. would they continue waiting for another year, go buy iphone 4, go buy android, commit suicide, assassinate steve jobs, etc? :p)

Seriously though this did happen to other products in the past, for example ipod classic had been similarly updated every single year since its release, until the last year when it missed the update. After all, "this site" has a disclaimer at the top of the page ;)

the next iphone will most likely be iphone 4G-S w/ flash support, facetime over network, & 4g capability..& still look the same.
Iphone 5 probably not coming out until 2012.

Flash? LOL! right.

The iPhone 5 is the iPhone 5. Whatever marketing name they give to it does not matter as it will still be the 5th version of the iPhone.

iPhone 1 = Original 2g iPhone (2007)
iPhone 2 = 3g (2008)
iPhone 3 = 3gs (2009)
iPhone 4 = 4 (2010)
iPhone 5 = whatever (2011)
iPhone 6 = whatever (2012)
...

I would bet the house on an iPhone 5 coming out in June/July Apple has no reason to push off a hardware update to later in the year since they probably have been working on the iPhone 5 for the better part of a year now.

There haven't been many rumours, but I thinks it'll have:

Likely:
- 8mp camera with larger lens.
- 1080p video recording.
- NFC
- Higher contrast display.
- Antenna resign.

Possible:
- Larger screen (3.7 inch to 4 inch).
- 4G - LTE
- Complete redesign.
- Complete refresh / redesign of iOS, with widgets, decent notifications and live wallpapers.* And Adobe flash.**

Unlikely:
- 3DS - style screen.

*cool but useless
**0.00000001% chance of happening. But it's in the possible heading, as the possibility of a improbable event possibly occurring, means that there's a probability, of that possibility happening, in the probable existence, of a type of possible universe...

Keep dreaming. And, regardless of what they call it, this will be the 5th iPhone.

I just going to say this now you won't get any of these in iOS5 or on the iPhone 5

why not? flash not compatible with iphones o.s something?

Apple doesn't want Flash on the iPhones. They support HTML5
