[Merged] iPhone 5 / 2011 iPhone speculation thread

Not really. I mean, if you follow the genreal release of new phones then yes, but they could skip this year all together. It's not probable, but it's possible.

Someone had to say it. Thank you. I get really frustrated when I see people so arrogant as to say that Apple WILL be updating this summer, and not taking anything else into consideration. It's possible that they may not. It may not be likely that they'll wait, but it is always a possibility.

what network, att or Verizon? Yes there is a very high chance a new one will be out this summer for ATT since they have been doing yearly refreshes BUT that does not mean it will be for Verizon

There haven't been many rumours, but I thinks it'll have:

Likely:
- 8mp camera with larger lens. (possible)
- 1080p video recording. (possible)
- NFC (possible)
- Higher contrast display. (possible)
- Antenna resign. (possible)

Possible:
- Larger screen (3.7 inch to 4 inch). (3.7 - 3.8 maybe)
- 4G - LTE (possible)
- Complete redesign. (dream on)
- Complete refresh / redesign of iOS, with widgets, decent notifications and live wallpapers.* And Adobe flash.** (maybe widgets themes and updated notifications)

...in bold...

What type of widgets do you think Apple will implement? :

Widgets, like weather, clock etc. on the lock screen.

Or, widgets, on the home screen, so, for example, you could have a weather widget that takes up the same space as 2x2 app icon, and then they'll move down.

Or, do you Apple will add a extra step to get to apps;

right now it's: Lock - Home
Future : Lock - widgets and favourite apps - full list of apps. } a bit like android.

I guess you didn't notice the winky face at the end...

Thank you for noticing that I was not being serious.

Apple is known for its secrecy surrounding its product releases, and yet, the same question gets asked over and over "Should I wait or Buy Now" or "When is the next iPhone being released" like if someone here has a crystal ball that can pin-poiint an actual date.

I understand this is a Rumor Site (forum), but regarding the iPhone, not much has changed since the last "When is the iPhone 5 being released" thread was started a week a go. Rumors go in cycles, and right now its all about the iPad since that is most likely to be the next device released by Apple, Spring will be about the iPhone rumors and the Summer will be about the iPods (if past events prove to be accurate).

and MarximusMG, you might want to re-read my signature below.

One simple reason - Jobs hates flash.

hahaha, true

Well now I realize that. But you can't blame me for thinking you were serious. There is an enormous number of people on this site that can't fathom the possibility that maybe, just maybe, Apple might do something different with the iPhone update cycle this year.

I agree with you.

Based on past experiences, yes, Apple has released a new iPhone in June/July of every year. But with Apple releasing a CDMA iPhone in just a few days, possibly the white iPhone during "Spring 2011" and Mac OS X Lion scheduled for a Summer release, this years iPhone release could possibly be different than its normal refresh cycle.

For the last 4 years, WWDC has been the event when Apple announces the newest iPhone's release date and specs. Last year's WWDC was only focused on iOS and iOS devices, but with Apple's "Back to the Mac" event this past October, and the release of the Mac App Store a few weeks ago, and again, Mac OS X Lion's summer release schedule, this year's WWDC could be refocused back to the Mac and the iPhone could see its own separate event.

This is just my opinion, but the thing is that no one knows what will happen until the invitations get sent out.

Absolutely agree with you. While there can be arguments made on either side of this issue, I think that this year (if any) would be the year that the iPhone wouldn't be the central focus at WWDC.

Flash? LOL! right.

The iPhone 5 is the iPhone 5. Whatever marketing name they give to it does not matter as it will still be the 5th version of the iPhone.

iPhone 1 = Original 2g iPhone (2007)
iPhone 2 = 3g (2008)
iPhone 3 = 3gs (2009)
iPhone 4 = 4 (2010)
iPhone 5 = whatever (2011)
iPhone 6 = whatever (2012)
...

I would bet the house on an iPhone 5 coming out in June/July Apple has no reason to push off a hardware update to later in the year since they probably have been working on the iPhone 5 for the better part of a year now.

There's a difference between the "iPhone 5" and the 5th iteration of the iPhone. Don't confuse the two.

+1 on that!

There's no way they're gonna release an 'iPhone 5' this summer with the new Verizon CDMA phone just round the corner.....

Can you imagine the uproar from all the people who would have purchased the CDMA Verizon iPhone and then be presented with iPhone 5 a few months later:eek: No way is that gonna happen.......

My money is on the 'new iPhone this year' being the white version - you just wait and see............:D

Out of curiosity, what would those people who are waiting for the updated iphone do, if the July comes and there is no update? (i.e. would they continue waiting for another year, go buy iphone 4, go buy android, commit suicide, assassinate steve jobs, etc? :p)
I'm one of the few T-Mobile faithful still rocking my 2G. Granted my data "speed" is terrible (cheap though! $5.99/month) but I continue to wait and see if Apple will finally make the handset available on T-Mobile's network. Before people poo poo the idea and say, "No way Apple will release an iPhone on T-Mobile, the MyTouch 4G commercials are slapping Apple in the face." I'd like to remind everyone of the VZW commercials over the Holidays last year Re: Island of Misfit Toys and all the Droid does commercials. VZW attacked AT&T AND Apple, T-Mo seems to be attacking AT&T and poking fun at the Mac vs. PC ads.
In short I continue to wait, though suicide sometimes seems to be a viable option ;)

I would MUCH rather be in the position of having bought the iPhone 4 now and then later be presented with the option of selling it and upgrading to the next iPhone (whenever it is released) than wait an unknown amount of time for the next iPhone, knowing I could have had one all along.

Ha! Job wouldn't lose the opportunity to make you pay the equivalent of your first child for one of his gadgets :D
So you can be sure the iPhone 5 is coming!

Of course the iPhone 5 is coming... No one here is denying there will be an iPhone 5. But it's very possible it may come next year.

If you're talking about an updated iPhone 4 this year, certainly - Apple does it every year after a new model is introduced. Will it be called the iPhone 5? Not according to Apple's track record.

I don't think 4 phones is enough to call it a track record yet, but, if we were to look at the track record, the next phone would be a redesign. 2g (metal back) 3G (redesigned with plastic back) 3GS (same as 3G with updated specs) iPhone 4 (complete redesign). If we were going by previous phones, ip5 would be a redesign of some sort.

That being said, I think that it will probably be a 3GS type upgrade. Hopefully we will get more, but who knows. The one thing I'd bet the farm on though is that there will be another model out come summer time. Verizon getting the ip4 will have no bearing on a new phone release. Apple has other countries that they sell iPhones to, and they aren't gonna make the rest of the world wait 2 years for the new phone just because verizon just got the iPhone.

Verizon, just like att will sell ip4 to customers up to the day the new ip5 comes out, and if that's what you bought, then that's what your stuck with unless your in your return window.

Agree. Cannot imagine verizon doing that to it's most loyal customers who for three years hung with big red when they could just as easily have bolted to AT&T to get the iPhone. It would be a horrible pr disaster.

What about the rest of the loyal customers around the World who are expecting a new phone this year? Pr nightmare?? Was it a Pr nightmare when a new att customer bought a 3GS in january only to have ip4 come out in June?

They may get one, but it will be the gsm equivalent of the CDMA phone, with improvements to both hardware and software so both phones have feature and hardware parity.

Remember that no one has actually seen/held an official, production version of the CDMA phone. It will be interesting to see if apple gives that phone some features/capacities not yet announced. Dual radios?

I'm not sure if I understand what your saying. The CDMA iPhone is the same as the ip4, just set up to run CDMA. Hardware shouldn't be any different other than what it takes to run CDMA. I'm talking about hardware changes.

I'm just saying that apple has had quite a while to develop the CDMA phone and that it arrives at the end of the ip4 product cycle. Would they not have developed it with the ip5 in mind? I really doubt they are going to have two separate products in production for a year, and only then bring gms and CDMA it parity. I very well may be wrong...
