Ya, it's just a 3gs with a faster processor, better network chip, better camera, camera flash, front facing camera, gyroscope, better antenna, more (front) color options, new design, higher resolution screen, HD recording capability, bigger battery and a noise cancellation mic.

You're right, they should have just called it the 3gs2.

Flashback to the 3GS....

"Yah its just a 3G with a better camera, processor and it can take movies."

Tech upgrades are always relative to the end-user.

Geez, what the heck do people want?

-Thinner
-Faster A4 chip
-Better battery life
-Hugely improved screen...4x the pixels as the 3GS

-5MP camera with flash
-Front-facing camera
-Gyroscope
-Video calling

I know, right? What's in bold was enough to convince me to buy the iPhone 4. It's well worth the $200/$300, personally.

Like others have said, this is a bigger update than the 3G and 3GS. Awesome camera, front facing camera, video chat, huge battery, sexy-ass design, high quality materials, AND iOS4. I don't see what there is to complain about...? How is this not as good as the other updates?

You know some people are never happy and they will always find a reason to complain about why feature blah is missing and why they won't upgrade and why AT&T or O2 or god knows who else is screwing them over.

Even if Apple made a phone from platinum with 128gb of ram a 3d screen with a dual core A9 which bent time and space and also cooked you dinner they would still moan because it doesn't actually make coffee or something!

I felt underwhelmed when the 3GS was announced here in the UK as I thought it was not much of an upgrade from the older one but went ahead and brought one anyway ;).

Fast forward to the iPhone 4 and all I can say is wow this is one phone I just have to own and to cram in all that into 9.3mm thickness is pretty amazing.

So to everyone who thinks this phone sucks go buy a windows or android mobile!

I am very upset today as I watched the notes from the keynote. How dare Apple, after years of upgrading the iPhone, not think to add microwave oven support into the iPhone 4. Now, I have to get all the way up from my seat, walk all the way accross the rooms into the kitchen if I want to re-heat a slice of pizza. very dissapointing keynote indeed.

I was actually pretty impressed with the upgrade. Given that we had already seen most of iOS4 and the physical device, it was hard to have anything surprising. But there were some great things as mentioned by others:

- Screen: 326ppi and IPS are fantastic
- Antenna system: Really hoping this will have a big impact
- Battery life: I was expecting a big bump given the iPad battery life. Looks good
- PDF reader in iBook: Very useful. I wonder how you manage pdfs...itunes i guess

I tend to agree with the OP. The keynote was disappointing.
And the Gizmodo post sure took the wind out of Steve's mystery.
Great specs, only the EVO and Sprint prices now look as good, or better.....

Don't blame aggie, he obviously wasn't paying attention for that section. Excuse his ignorance.

I certainly was. If you’re thinking talk time suggests 40% better battery life, you might want to look at 3G internet time. There it’s only 20%. For wifi, it’s only 11%. All of this factored in, it’s definitely not going to give you 40% better battery life. Next.

Oh, and don’t get all Mavericky with me. :)

i agree there is nothing that blows the new iphone out of the water.. they just evened the playing field .. the iphone is still a smart phone for stupid people...

i-c :apple:

How so?

I do IT for a living and I have to say, the last thing I want to do is troubleshoot my phone or install a hacked update or what not. After it's all said and done with, I want my stuff - just to work. Not sure how the iPhone is a smart phone for stupid people. I think it's a phone that appeals to A LOT of people. It integrates with my life nicely and it offers everything I need and then some.

Perhaps you can elaborate?

If you want an Iphone you have to get ATT, this has been common knowledge since 2007 and the contract with ATT is good until 2012! Rumors start every year about verizon iphone and they are never true.......either get an iphone with att or DONT GET ONE......pretty simple really

It's very disappointing to me that iPhone 4 isn't available on Verizon.

That being said, that's not why the keynote disappointed me. No Mac Pro updates? No Macbook Air updates? No talk of anything Mac related at all?

I <3 Apple, but they're quickly becoming to focused on being an iDevices company.

You need to look over iphonetoday’s posts. These features were already added. iPhone hot sweat heavy like hot pizza.

Once again we see the iphone chained to at&t and all the future iphone owners that won’t commit to at&t get a very disappointing day. I cannot believe that apple won’t see that people want more carries in the US and that a monopoly will hurt the iphone. We need more iphone carriers; competition will benefit the customer’s. Is apple about the customers? After viewing the google key note on “froyo” and the deception of the iphone 4 stuck on at&t, we will see millions of android phones sales starting today. I myself was waiting todays keynote to decide and apple you have made my choice and android. I believe that many users like me will be getting an android device and we will be able to see this boom once the statistics on the sales get revealed.

Wait until the iPhone 4 sales figures come out a week after launch, then you can go crying back under your rock. Fifty million installed users today - wait until the iPhone 4 launches.

I think this is a great upgrade. I am really not sure what you were expecting in the announcement today if you are this disappointed.

I know its not a iPhone microwave,
but USB microwave is about as good as your going to get right now! :p

The iPhone is very tired - how long before it's truly updated

This can't go on forever - Apple can't forever just bump the memory/camera/screen res etc. At some point they will surely have to actually update the overall design.

I know there's a lot to be said for 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', but consumers won't indefinitely but they same thing - Apple will have to revisit the design sometime.

I've had an iPhone and a 3GS (I skipped the 3G and will skip the 4G - don't see the point) but, if the 5th Gen isn't drastically different, I won't be buying that either (and I'm sure I won't be alone).

Just look at the attached image - put each of them in a protective case and they're pretty much the same.

A lot of spoiled people here. They dis it followed by, yes, I'll buy it.
Hypocrisy at its best.

What do you want this thing to do? Have thought control? Are you
in Redmond?

Since you seem to be a materials expert, why exactly would you prefer steel to aluminum? More importantly, what is the benefit of metal over a high-quality plastic? Do you have hardness figures to cite? How about providing a deformation curve or two to show that the metals will elastically deform better? Or more to the point, citing reasonable tolerances for what you'd expect in the materials used? Also, I'm sure you've taken into account the fact that the plastic case will allow for better reception, right?

Steel has a significantly higher strength than Ally does, so with clever design (as they have done here), you can create a very light frame which is also very strong. OK, benefits for something this size aren't huge over Ally, but certainly on par with.

Stainless steel is incredibly hard, much more so than ally or plastic. The glass front and back would also, by nature (generally speaking, unless we go into very high grade engineering plastics), be much harder than any plastic you would get in a consumer device.

Elastic deformation, ok glass and steel aren't going to be better than ally and plastic, but to be perfectly honest, for a phone this is a very small consideration. An ally and plastic phone isn't going to be able to elastically deform enough to save it from a high fall any more than a glass and steel one is.

Tolerances of CNC machined stainless will be just as good as machined ally and moulded plastic. Ditto with the glass (as it is essentially just a flat plate, no fancy shape).

In terms of reception, not only is the entire of the steel frame an aerial, but it is a very small area and the large ceramic front and back would be very radio transparent. Again, just as good as an ally/plastic phone.

Enjoy your new phone, whatever it may be.
