Of course its has it flaws but theres not one game that exists today that is perfect not even the highly praised LoZ:Oot.

MGS4 sits right up there with the best and damn it deserves it. The cut-scene are a needed rest for me after all that hiding and sneaking....its so intense I welcome it.

It deserves all the acclaim its getting.

Joystiq(comment section) is def not a good sorce to link something related to Sony...too much fanboys use that site;)

Bless

i dont think Hideo is an apple man im afraid to say... I just think Konami sold out. There is SOOO much product placement in it its unbelievable. But so far game is soo good! And Online rocks... I missed online when they shut down MGS3S servers. :(

Actually, it's more than likely due to Yoji Shinkawa, the Artist and Art Director for the entire series.

The game isn't the best MGS ever, though. The first one by far is the best, but this... This is a work of art and it really shows how awesome Kojima's games are. This one redefines the series and allows more variety in game play. It also answers all the WTF moments through the series.

I love the hinting at the old memory card trick from MGS on the PS1.

I'm not entirely sure about that (screw the article, check the comments). We've got some staunch MGS fans here ;)
It's exactly like Zelda, GoW, Oblivion etc. You'll get pounced on for saying it isn't perfect until long after the hypes died down ;)

Personally I'm not a fan of the overly long cutscenes but I love the ultra high production values. Still give it a solid 8/10 though but not something I'm rushing to finish. I just don't have the time to be able to sit down and play through a game like this. It's on my to-play list next to MP3.

Yes, there's always going to be a bunch of people who simply don't like the game or don't like it as much and of course there are always a bunch of fanboys who think the game is much greater than what it really is. I've been hearing and reading a bunch of criticism for the cutscenes and they are probably right (saying there are far too many cutscenes and the more you progress the less you play) but that is one of the things that make MGS so great for me so those negative-comments are actually positive for people like me.

Anyways, what surprised me is a bunch of reliable and down-to-earth people (not just fanboys) stating that the game is really as great as the reviews say, I don't think I've heard any reliable person yet say that Grand Theft Auto IV is really as good as the reviews say.

In any case, I'm a huge MGS fan so MGS4 just sold me on a PS3, if the MGS4 bundle PS3 has PS2 backwards compatibility then I might also get Metal Gear Solid The Essential Collection with it (it's only about $30). Does anyone know for how much longer Sony plans to keep the MGS4 bundle?

Oh it's definitely a step above GTA IV. I really do like MGS4 myself, I don't think it's a defining moment in gaming or anything ultra spectacular like a lot of people think but it just feels so high quality. Or at least in the first chapter :p I've no idea what happens after that!

Yup, this is actually my first MGS game I've owned (I've played parts of the series but not a full game) and I'm loving it so much. I'm thinking I'll pick up the essentials soon.

Theres just too many kids these days who have no appreciation for story. They want the drivel from GoW where the story is just "LETS KICK SOME ASS! *gameplay*", or the countless superhero movies which are nothing but action. Luckilly those kids arent old enough to review yet.

But the story in GoW was kinda ripped apart too, people like it for the gameplay not the writing.

Thats my point, people dont like stories anymore, they like games with a story that only involves short cutscenes that pump people up for more gameplay. Whats worse is that people like cutscenes which is basically just pre-played gameplay with cinematic camera angles and motion capture animation. You cant tell a story without cutscenes, there has to be a break in gameplay where people talk, for some reason the trend is that cutscenes are "last gen" which means stories are "last gen" too outside of RPG's.

Well, I'm happy to not be people. Usually my favorites games are mostly because I loved the story. So I really hope devs start working on better stories.

its just that many people feel that gaming is not about story.. its about playing. they think that if you want story you should read a book or watch a movie. many people hate MGS because it has so many cut scenes.

I just finished the game. outstanding. the best ending. I couldnt have hoped for anything better. Thank you for 20 great years snake. Now I just want MGS1 MGS2 and MGS3 all remade with the MGS4 engine and gameplay and we are set....

Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection REMIX! ;) that would be sweet.

People do like stories though. It's why Zelda, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Half Life sell well. They have good gameplay and good stories. The MGS series is no different to them above games; they all have overly hammy, B-movie quality stories full of trivialities.
7/10 of the highest ranked games this gen all have a focus on story. So I'd say they're quite popular still.

I still think it looks amazing graphically... but its starting to lose me...

however...

I will finish it (even if it takes me a year to do so - and that in itself is a big change for me as I couldn't be arsed at all with the other MGS's) but it's becoming a little like hard work rather than gaming for me at the moment.

Have yet to play online though.

*spoiler* getting into outta haven was tough with all the geckos and cyborg ninjas always on alert...but after I got past the air tight door...it was smooth sailing.

I really like the Screaming mantis flight...reminds me so much of MGS1. The game wasn't really a challenge for me I beat every boss in the game without dying but those gecko kicks had me though:eek:

I enjoyed the part of the game when all the soldiers became brain dead and moved around like mindless zombies....that was kick arse.

Might be a bit slow here (harr harr), but a friend sent me this screenshot, and I figured people here'd appreciate it:

I just found one of the raciest things I've ever seen in this whole series. I dunno why they put it in there...

The trick... Boss fight. Camera. it didn't start right away. Oh, it's when they're walking.... don't shoot anything, except with the camera.

Hideo...you perv.

And my final comments:
The ending of the game was great. And the last boss was quite interesting. I'm trying not to spoil anything ;). This is probably some of the most entertainment I have ever gotten from a video game. And is one of the best. It is a work of art! I loved how it wrapped up everything and had many little notes to other games ("where's your memory card?"-"insert disk 2!"-and many others) and I liked Act 4's umm... flashback. Even if I haven't owned a MGS game I still played a bit, but now wish I played 'em all. The cut scenes were fantastic and the boss fights were just epic. This is the game of the year.

My first play time was about 17 hours and 30 minutes and I received an Eagle rank as well.

The "Camera Trick" is kind of like... a photoshoot. Get to a boss fight and try it (since you've beat the game and have the camera now). Wait for the walking part of the fight. and just snap pics and move around them, and wait for it. You'll see what I mean if you wait it out a couple of minutes. MAke sure the camera is equipped...

OH, and the REASON for an iPod in the game, listen to the Integral Podcast loaded on to the iPod in the game. They explain why it's there (along with the other apple products).

Haha, ya I never really got the camera :p. I'll just get it on my replay. So what do you mean anyway? And explain why they have Apple products.
Thanks.

I don't want to ruin it.... So...maybe I'll show you in my next post.

Also, to any MGS series fan who remembers the "Ghosts" from the first MGS game when taking photos, they're in this game too at a certain point.... And when you're in the photo editing menu of the game, you can "Exorcise" them, lol.

Nah, I already beat the game and still don't have a clue what you are talking about. You can just PM it to me.
