Yet another armchair CEO.

You guys need to pipe down a bit on the whole "Apple needs to..." bit. I'm not trying to pick on you, specifically, Yvan256, but every thread, at least one poster makes some bold statement of what Apple needs to be doing. In case you haven't noticed, in this horrible economy, Apple is the only computer maker that is thriving. Why can't you just concede that maybe Apple seems to know what's best for running Apple right now? Or that they have a plan that seems to be working for them just fine.

If they don't have some product or service that meets your current wants or needs right now, that's a shame. Maybe they will build one in the future. But please stop with this arrogant belief that you (or I) have any real knowledge on what it takes to make Apple more successful. I'm betting that the inmense majority here (myself included), don't.

Did you read my whole post? I don't think so otherwise you wouldn't be saying this.

As I said in my original post, yes Apple are doing well, but we'll never know how much better they could be doing with that "missing link" Mac.

Good Job Msft. Keep wasting $10 million per ad (OK 2) and you're products will sky rocket.... and blow up in space!

So in one ad campaign, Microsoft is going to do their own version of the "PC and Mac" as well as "Switcher" ads? In two weeks they'll give up again and we'll have silhouette ads of people dancing with their PCs.

Apple will just retort with a new 'Get a Mac' ad where Hodgman runs on the set and out of breath and the Mac guy asks where PC has been and PC can say "moonlighting for MS as a PC. (a brief pause) Literally!" (I think that succinctly says it all) :D

The main problem with this is that Apple offers far more hardware options than MS does. Dell, Sony, Toshiba etc. offer lots more choices, but MS doesn't sell PC hardware at all.

Good, I'm glad and I hope WIN 7 ROCKS. Reason? I am sick of the Macbook and Mini not having a good graphic card just to screw pro users less than 1% of market share. GO EFIX. LOL.

Seriously, Apple has a great system and everyone disses MSFT yet what happened when Mobile Me came out and they tried EXCHANGE and 3rd party APPS? A nightmare. It shows how good MSFT does a job with their 3rd party apps vs Apple. INO, its no so easy is it Apple.

Personally I think Apple needs to stop this childness nonesense with having to buy a MBP or MACPRO if you want to play games and use it as a pro machine. I mean really. A few years ago, when iMacs were NOT that powerful, they could be bought with MATTE, now that they are so strong, they are offered as GLOSSY only, translation, no GRAPHICS PRO work.

Add to this that both the Macbook and iMac DO NOT USE STANDARD firewire chipsets from TEXAS INSTRUMENTS (only in Mac Pro and MBP), which leads to many problems with FIREWIRE devices. In fact, I was recently at Avid Symphony, no offense Apple but AVID is still the TOP DOG with TV/FEATURE film and I WAS SHOCKED when I found out the school uses ALL VISTA 64 BIT, high end SERVER type machines with blazing speed, they stated much faster than you can get with a MAC PRO top of the line.

Then of course you have this:

Google Y'Z' Dock, you will find the inventor of the DOCK, not APPLE, do research on INDEXING, Microsoft invented it, it was first introduced in OSX then in VISTA, so everyone thinks APPLE INVENTED IT, then of course there are widgets, again, not another APPLE invention. Time machine, Windows has SYSTEM RESTORE. Now, don't get me wrong, VISTA does have its problems, but if you have it set the way you want, it can really WORK well in POST PRODUCTION and I think WIN 7 is going to ROCK and if you want to see innovation, look at this link from SUN MICROSYSTEMS, years ago......

Can't remember what it was called but it was years ahead of its time.

Plus, if you go to vegas, you can see TABLES that use MSFT and the waitress brings you the tab, you can drag your item to you and your spouse, place your credit card on top of it, and it's paid.

I don't know why MSFT has such a nightmare delivering OPERATING systems, but if something like EFIx starts to catch on, and people start to rethink VISTA, I hope that APPLE is forced to reduce prices (which I think they will) and ALL SYSTEMS will have dedicated GPU and the separation will come by way of raid, more cores, and price cuts. Also need to make devices have the ability to move the music around plus DELETE movies, podcast, music, from the device, NOT ITUNES.

PS. Read a hint, if your back up takes forever (iPhone), turn off the sending info to Apple. Not sure where that setting is.

You sure? I'm pretty sure he was in a HP commerical a while ago.

Here's not 1!!! BUT 2!!!!! HP commercial spotters....

Gwen Steffani annnnnnd Mr. PHarrelL

I know... I'm good :)

Notice the mac in the back? :p Sell out lol... Can't be greatful for the machine that processes his gift.

He's also got himself a GOLD iPhone

What exactly was the goal of the two adds?

Ever think of a little thing called raising awareness for the microsoft brand? no?

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery so the saying goes in that manner. ;):p:D

ya and know what else they say, the person who's number 1 never talks about who's number 2. not so true the other way around is it?

Microsoft just needs to realize it's commercials are never going to be as good as Apple's.

its that simple

:apple::D

ya and apple needs to realize it will always be the second best computer company

it just shows they are weaker since they are so offended by apples ads.

ya... microsoft is SO weak hahahaha

I hope Microsoft pulls this one off better. Competition is good.

Competition is good.
Naturally enough I'd rather the best product won, not the best advertising. :)

what was the goal exactly? I'm just confused as to what the first two ads were trying to tell us

Hypnosis 101:
If a client is stuck or has a strong unwavering belief in something (eg: Microsoft is crap), firstly create a state of confusion. Use the state of confusion in loose conjunction with the strong belief to loosen the belief, and start offering a new generative belief.

ie: you can't go from one definite belief to a contradictory definite belief. You have to have confusion and choice in the middle :)

So.... they did the first bit... just didn't get to replacing it with another belief.

Their strategy is to get a look alike for the PC guy? That is hilarious. I guess if you can't win with Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld, time to copy. :D

I was hoping to see Apple copy Microsoft a little further down the advertising track.

I mean - when they got to their "Windows not Walls" advertisement, we'd then see a response from Apple parodying the concept (perhaps PC in a shed being very pleased with all the little windows he can look at the view from, while Mac sits outside lapping up the sunshine)... I'm sure their comedic ads could do something great.

What a surprise... Microsoft following in Apple's footsteps and using their ideas. Is this really the best that they could do?

Mojave ads were great. It made their Windows users look stupid and foolish on national TV.

...The new ads will have some appearances from Bill Gates but will also show other celebrities as everyday PC users in "fast-paced, upbeat vignettes" about their use of Microsoft Windows based PCs.

What, like the HP commercials? More than any other, I thought the HP commercials featuring Shaun White, Jay-Z, and others were actually fairly effective. Microsoft isn't copying Apple, IMHO, they're actually copying HP.

The NYTimes cites a number of research companies who felt that the buzz surrounding the first two ads were sufficiently positive and accomplished their goal.

The ads are interesting, if vague.

I like the idea of a "headless" Mac, but I'm not convinced that Apple's reticence to have such a model matters all that much. I'm finding more and more people just want laptops and are abandoning the desktop in droves. There will still be people who will want a tower, but this sector is rapidly shrinking. And, the iMac works spectacularly well for most people.

Uhh... PCs don't run OS X, therefore you compare OS too... It's simple :D

actually i happily run 10.5.5 on my apple labeled pc and I love it. Apple hard ware is no more elite then pc hardware. fact: apple sells an extremely over priced OS.

Three Hundred Million?

Okay for 300 million I would say why not give away a discount coupon of Vista they can turn that into a profit. Make only one version of Vista available the "ultimate edition" for every user. I am a mac user now, I want to have a Windows installed on my mac I am not gonna spend so much money for windows and parallel. If only MS would give that 300 million to consumers as a discount to their product I think that would be a great marketing. Imagine they are losing money in sales then advertising non-sense. BG are you listening? Convert macuser into a vista user by giving a discounted OS then I am a windows user again coz I am gonna install it with bootcamp does it make sense? I would say this is a no brainer for getting the trust back of your old customer like me....

Jerry should give the money back or donate it to a charity. Absolute rubbish.

I'm trying to figure out how that cat got in there that way

Microsoft's not hurting for money, I don't think they'll lower the prices, since box sales of Windows generally aren't very high anyway.

Damage? I hardly doubt the "Get a Mac" commercials changed the mind of anyone who wasn't already heavily considering a Mac.

You all don't understand how ads work. The intend is not to change people's minds or use logic to explain a project. The point is to make the product or company name even more familiar. When people are in the store and they have to choose between two cans of beans they notice the brand and say "Ho, I've heard of these guys". Apple used to be this little company that no one know anything about and now people know about it as the one that makes those ads. The point is just to keep the brand in front of their face. That was the point of those Steinfeld/Gates ads too.

What overpriced?

What do you mean OSX is overpriced have you ever looked the priced of Vista recently. What are you using pirated Windows OS or Windows 95?

im talking about the price you pay when you purchase a computer. you can buy an hp laptop with the same specs as a MBP for over $1000 cheaper. Why the $1000 price hike? The answer is OS X.
