and the iPhone 4?.....He had to call a press conference explaining why the iPhone lost its signal when held. Had to give away free bumpers to everyone. Fiasco.

and the Lisa did not become the Macintosh.

Well if you remember what REALLY happened... they showed that LOADS of other phones also cut out depending on how they were held. So please that is no argument at all. It was mainly Samsungs Paid shill Social army doing their thing.

Have a week go by without a 20 minute update.
Have a day go by without a crash or 10.
Have a hour go by without some nonsensical technical pop up.
No find decades old UI elements they still have not changed since windows NT/95
Change a system setting without going insane trying to find it in either of the 2 UI metaphors ( metro / classic ) and then the dozens of buried tabs and modal pop up.
Generally be happy and have a nice time using your computer at all.
Yawn......try using it.

I have to say, the 13" non tb model which I purchased, is my favorite Mac I have ever owned, it truly is a phenomenal computer, and I think it was also a great value. That being said, the other models, tb 13" and tb 15" are just incredibly expensive, it is absurd. Plus, no non touch bar 15", also an annoying choice as I know many people who would have preferred that model to exist. The line is just so fragmented now. Not Apple's best work. I am thankful they made the computer that I wanted, but feel sorry for many as I feel everything else was kind of short changed and/or fragmented. Most importantly, their entire ecosystem is just not congruent right now. There was a time (2013 ish,) where while yes the computers were older and technology was older, the lineup had a very nice congruency to it, MBP, MBA, iPhone, Display, Airport, everything was polished and could work together well. Now, I guess that technically is the case, but, display no longer, airport gone, MBP kind of weird, etc. Just not quite as on point from a suite perspective. It is unfortunate.

Microsoft is on to something here..

I know I'm only one consumer and I don't represent everyone, but as a long time mac/iOS user (started using macs with the first macbook after the iBook), but I will no longer be buying a new Mac computer and very likely won't be buying another iOS device.

I sit here with a 2008 Mac Pro, Macbook Air (personal), iPad Pro (12"), iPhone 7 Plus, Multiple Apple TV's etc and a work Macbook Pro (last years).

For me, I don't really see Apple taking a "innovative" direction anymore. This whole dongle, overpriced MacBooks and mediocre iPhone updates have really just hit a wall for me.

Again, I'm only one person and certainly don't/can't speak for everyone, but I know I'm not really sold on Apple's future direction. Hopefully their platform still continues to work well for others though!

You hit the nail on the head for me. My wife and I have Apple iPhones/iPads and Macbooks. This key thing to me is if you lose me as a MacBook user you lose my entire ecosystem of Apple products.

In defence of the Cube, it was so, so nearly perfect and yet it was a massive failure! The price was its achilles heal, you could buy an equivalently priced Mac Pro for several hundred pounds less. The Cube was much smaller and way more BEAUTIFUL, but that doesn't really matter too much for a device which is typically tucked away on/under a desk somewhere...

Conversely, the new MBP appears to have a number of other complaints against it (I've not used one yet, I've only read about the issues), along with many considering it over priced (me included).

I'd have loved to own a Cube back in the day, but I bought a Mac Pro G4 instead :)

Edit: Hmmm, my rose tinted glasses have cleared - I seem to remember issues with the Cube's acrylic case cracking. Were there any other issues with it that I can't remember?
Those were lines from mold. I still have a G4 Cube.

I find it amusing how many comments seem to act as though the Microsoft Surface is some sort of "panacea". It is all still crazy over priced, still Windows, and laden with design drawbacks. I am disgusted with the new MacBook "Pro" too but let's be honest, Microsoft Surface products are junk.

yeah ok. I have owned many other phones. As a iPhone lover I can honestly say I never had a phone become completely unusable when I held it in my hand.

I'm just like you. I actually went as far as to buy a maxed out MBP and ended up giving it to a co-worker. I ordered a maxed out Surface last week. First time in about 17 years buying a non-Mac. I'm really done with them. And I'll just say this: Jon Ives is totally over rated.

Unfortunately their disappointment with the Surface Pro 4 will send them right back next year. I own an SP4 as a secondary machine and the hardware is great - the keyboard/trackpad are one of the best I have used on such a small laptop/tablet. The problem is the battery life is wildly unpredictable and I have had so many issues with just freezing, losing inputs and randomly restarting for updates that I don't feel like I can rely on the thing. The other problem, it really isn't great as a tablet, at least not compared to an iPad.

Interesting, because I love my SP4. I don't have these issues. Granted, from what I've read it seems like some SP4s have it worse than others.

I actually like using my SP4 as a tablet because of the kick stand, but to each his own. It easily does an excellent job of replacing my iPad and rMBP most of time. The software is definitely more polished on the Mac side, but Windows is Windows.

Consider this, in round number Apple generated about $46 billion in revenue last quarter. Of that, about $5 billion came from Mac sales and $32 billion from iPhone and iPad (IOS), the remainder from other products/services.

Maybe Apple has simply become a phone/tablet company since only about 11% of their entire revenue comes from computers.
Cool theory bro, but iPads don't bring much more revenue than Macs. If we're using your criteria, Apple really just a smartphone company, and everything else is just expensive accessories to the iPhone.

Yeah, Microsoft is leading now. As someone that loves the Apple ecosystem and has always bought Mac products in the past, I'm struggling to justify carrying on like this and I just don't know where to go or what to buy.

My Mac Pro is something like 5 years old and still feels like a better and more powerful and upgradeable machine than anything offered by Apple since. My 30" Apple Cinema Display is pushing 10 years old now but Apple hasn't released a product that seems like an improvement since. My MacBook Pro is 8 years old and failing and my iPad is four years old and unusable due to slowness now.

I'd like a laptop/ipad hybrid that's good to replace my MBP and iPad. Something like the iPad Pro but that also runs OSX. I want an upgradeable modern Mac Pro. I want a > 30" retina display Apple monitor.

It really feels like Apple don't want me as a customer anymore.
Same here. 2009 Mac Pro - 30" Cinema Display - Waiting for Godot ... or go to PC and never look back.

Hmmm. I have a 6+ year old Dell that I have upgraded through all the MS iterations since XP and am now on Windows 10. I have NONE of these problems that you mentioned, not one.

Righto - so you got though Vista with NO problems. I laugh in your face. 7 was the only stable OS - 10 is still pretty bad...

Oh and the 2 UI metaphor exist on your machine so you saying that has never happened to you is just plain untrue.

few people buy a desktop because of its looks. Its not art.

On the contrary. The appearance of a product has a huge influence on people’s attraction to it. It’s just that people have different opinions of what is attractive. Look at the gaming enthusiasts whose primary need is performance. Yet they are equally seduced by Alienware’s badass cabinets. Not to mention the DIYers who like to mod their PCs.

I used to get pushback when I suggested design embellishments for the agricultural products one of my employers sold. They insisted that rednecks were practical and wouldn’t be seduced by fancy packaging. Not so. You think a fashionless redneck isn’t appreciative of a nice hunting rifle’s lines and materials? Hell, look at trucks today. They have more luxuries than a Mercedes sedan.

Take note Apple. It is a nice machine but for the money, it's lacking in legacy connectivity, graphics power and main memory. Also battery life sacrificed for thinness.

For a Pro laptop, thinness is not the first consideration. 32 or 64GB could have been available with a larger battery.

huh. For me and the "Pro/semi pro" work I do, it is. I need to take my laptop everywhere I go. The lightness and USB C is welcome.

Don't need 32gb-64gb of work, and if someone did, thats what a workstation is for. I ca
Hmm, I have a single cable going from my new MacBook Pro to my new monitor. Far from complex.

Exactly. its only complicated if you are trying to use tons of legacy equipment/refuse to buy a cable or dock. People are complain they can't plug their iPhones into their MBP...which hasn't been necessary for years. They are separate items that sync wirelessly.

Don't you guys worry!!!! Tim will blame Trump for the decline of Apple. And Tim will fix it by the most inovative new macOS with a set of new emojis based on Trump.

Well there is anecdotal evidence among young people that the Mac (not the iphone) is losing to MS. I was just at two universities over the last couple of weeks and I saw very few Apple laptops but a ton of Surface and PC/Tablet hybrids. One class of about 40 there was only one MacBook. It was a very surprising change.

Could that be a fact of its proximity to Redmond? I've been to several universities in the Nashville area recently and they seemed to be about 95% Mac with only a few students and teachers using PC's.

I took delivery of an Asus ROG laptop last week. It has a 17.3" screen, i7 6700 processor, 16gb of ram, 1tb hard drive and a GTX 1060 with 6gb of ram... I paid $1200 for it.

Apple needs to pull their collective heads out of their you know whats. There's zero chance I'd buy a Macbook at this point. I'm not saying this as a troll as I'm a huge Apple supporter, but I think the direction they're taking is absurd. The prices for the hardware versus what you get is nuts.

This Asus is thin and light weight enough considering what it is, a desktop-class system. It doesn't have an interactive bar above the keyboard and I'm okay with that. :D

You run the Mac into the ground, you drive away professionals.

You drive away professionals, the fewer developers make apps for iOS (which uses the Mac).

The fewer developers make apps for iOS, the lower sales you have (in your cash cow products, no less)

The lower sales you have across the board, the more developers have even less reason to develop for your platform.

The more developers have even less reason to develop for your platform, you slip into a deep sales slump.

You slip into a deep sales slump, you start canceling peripheral products and services in the ecosystem to "refocus."

You start canceling peripheral products and services in your ecosystem, you reduce your lock-in.

You reduce your lock-in, the more customers you lose to competing platforms.

The more customers you lose to competing platforms, the more cash you bleed out.

The more cash you bleed out, the more desperate you get with ever more gimmicky features.

The more desperate you get with ever more gimmicky features, the more your consumer brand image is damaged.

The more your consumer brand image is damaged, you become the laughing stock of the industry (such as RIM, Yahoo, old Apple).

You become the laughing stock of the industry and it's game over, man. GAME FREAKING OVER.

Apple isn't somehow different than any other company that has suffered a decline. Apple got lucky back in the 90s, plain and simple. Their phenomenal leader returned and it's a success story unlike we've ever seen. But they're not immune. I've seen many other companies wander down this path to irrelevancy after enormous success blinded them. It has happened before, and it will happen to most companies at some point. As far as tech companies go, Apple is pretty freaking old. It's surprising that they've survived this long. It's not too late to turn things around, but all I'm saying is that they're no longer heading in the right direction.

No professional ever said "Holy hell my computer isn't thin enough!" They say "Dammit this thing is too slow! And I've only got 30 minutes of battery life left. No no no!" You can't just keep going this long between updates to the Mac and expect Pros to stick around. We are always under pressure to make bigger and better projects at higher resolution than ever before and many of us regularly update our hardware. In just a few years we've gone from 18-22MP RAW photos being common to 50MP. We've gone from 1080p30 being common to 4K60 with HDR. We've gone from having to design non-responsive websites with one dimension to responsive websites with 4-6 breakpoint dimensions, which massively increases the working size of our design files. I understand part of it is Intel's problem, but part of it isn't—and I'm not just talking about restricting their specs by making it so thin. Apple has a successful chip design team making the various chips for iOS, tvOS and watchOS. They could solve the problem for the Mac if they put enough effort behind it. I hope they are.

If Surface ran MacOS, I'd probably get one of those machines. Windows just blows though :(

I know how you feel but I think windows has advanced a lot since they bad 8 and 8.1. The windows 10 is designed to be used with stylus too which will never be possible on Macos/OSX without huge user interface overhaul. And with latest launches by Ive and Cook, I don't see it happening.

My daily driver is still 2015 rMBP but this might be the last one until some day. I went to shop and tried Surface Pro 4 which is already bit dated but the stylus interface and drawing with it felt really intuitive. I felt like I had missed a lot of things while being inside Apple ecosystem. Like when I jumped to OSX and Mac OS 9 from windows XP. There are always better options because things change. I used to like Apple products but I have never felt so disappointed like last two years or so.

You didn't ask me, sorry, but I would like to answer this. What are these "mythical I/O devices? As I sit here at my desk at home, these are the current I/O devices I have that are either USB1, or non USB3/TB device. They are, 3 different monitors that don't support USB/TB, a portable DVD read/write drive, my external Time machine backup disc which is USB1, my Logitech mac compatible keyboard and mouse which uses the USB1 compatible unifying receiver, a mac compatible dasKeyboard that is not usb3/TB compatible, my B&W desktop speakers which are USB1 not 3 compatible. all my thumbdrives (7 at last count) that aren't USB3/TB compatible, my logitech camera/mic, and there are probably more. And these are items that are in almost constant daily use.

Do YOU understand now why there is such an uproar about USB3/TB being the only ports ?

No not really. Most of that stuff is years old and needs a update fella.
Camera - one is built in.
Why on earth are you using a USB 1 HDD for anything! they are 5mb/s pointless.
DVD! wow!
USB3 is backward compatible to all these... and again you have wires aleady - jsut buy new ones. they are all cheap. Dongles are not needed.
Thumbdrives cost dollars.
