Microsoft didn’t used to make PCs, so their position is quite different than it used to be, and ought to be a worry to Apple.

It might worry Apple that Microsoft seems to be focusing on expensive premium computers.

But they're not the only OEM who makes expensive premium computers. I wonder if HP has seen many Mac users switching to the HP Spectre, for instance. Or Lenovo to the Yoga 910.

If you think about it... Microsoft is yet another OEM making PCs that run Windows.

Ordinarily you see people switching from Windows to Mac... not the other way around. That might be changing though.

Still... there are a billion Windows PCs out in the world... and only 100 million Macs.

So if any switching is happening... it's more likely to be Windows to Mac.

I've been using Windows 10 on a gaming machine since even before it was publicly released in 2015 and it's really stable. Performance is really good, on desktop at least. No virus problems at all, Windows Defender does a good job so far.

Windows 10 is actually good. The problem IMO is that Windows 10 is a Frankenstein with pieces from Windows 7, 8, and 10. Since Windows supports software from more than 10 years ago many developers simply don't invest in renewing their software and the result is that it's difficult to find modern software from small developers like you can on macOS.

The other day I was setting up a Windows desktop machine for working (design and web dev) and looked for software such as iStat Menus, BetterTouchTool, FontCase, Karabiner, Alfred, etc. I couldn't find anything that was remotely interesting. Most software available is from the Windows 7 era, is not compatible with scaling on hi DPI monitors, or it just doesn't offer the functionality needed.

Right!... scaling and high DPI still sucks on Windows 10.

[doublepost=1481584294][/doublepost]The Surface book is joke. Companies don't even make apps for it.

Surfaces are used to run the same apps as PC. Sometimes resolution/UI gets a bit funky if no good setting for it but workable all the same. Some cater to the screen resolutions now a bit better.

Some applications out there imo I see no benefit from going full bore touch development. So not much impetus to make apps for the touch aspect.

these are commonly used as I have seen them as small portable computers. With mouse support in place and used. Yes, that dead horse I will rez again (from the iOS needs mice threads of the past that is) . My case for this has been I use gaming mice. For non gaming reasons as well. Have some profiles set for key presses on extra buttons I find time saving in normal "work" applications. Touch is not replacing this anytime soon. I have up to 5 extra functions on my mouse. This would be besides L and R click and scroll wheel...which also has wheel press down function(s). 9 functions there...lots for 1-2 finger moves to match really.

And at least with me and on IPP with pencil highlighting text for copy is still the suck compared to a mouse. Precise as it is, I will grant the pencil is very decent here, still lacks for this. blue dots and shifting them is not very good imo.

Not even going to say its me being older and less agile finger wise. Console or PC when my son talks trash I can still get that snapshot head shot on him in an FPS to show him he is getting better, he is not a jedi yet though. So precise motor functions...I still have to some degree lol.

Almost have those blue dots right where I went them...just a bit more...almost perfect.....damn. Blue dots go skynet and highlight wtf ever they want. this happens often with me.

I'm a computer consultant and spend the majority of my time supporting Windows machines. I can't imagine too many people are switching to Windows from Mac OS UNLESS they have specific software or hardware that requires Windows to run. I realize this is just anecdotal, but in my 21 years in business, I have only had one user buy a new Mac to replace a Windows machine and then went back to Windows a few days later because she didn't want to learn a new OS. (She did keep the MacBook, I just Bootcamped it for her and put Windows on it.) I have helped quite a few people switch to Mac OS, especially during the Windows 8 period. And with very little exception, most of my customers merely tolerate Windows 10--most of them had it forced on them during the year of the surprise upgrades. Those that really do like Windows usually want 7, not 10. I even have a few die-hards that run XP still--crazy and not recommended. I have setup several Surface Pros for people and they are good but the high resolution screens make it a crap shoot sometimes as to whether you will be able to read some windows that don't scale well. Also, battery time has been pretty bad. I've not had any customers yet with the Surface Book, I've only played with it in stores. Seems decent.

Me, I run a Windows 10 Desktop for gaming, but do all my day-to-day work and writing on my new MacBook Pro in OSX. The Touch Bar is useful to me and I love Touch ID. The screen is beautiful and the sound is amazing for a laptop. My battery time is only so-so, but hopefully an update may fix it. The cost was, for me, pretty much typical Apple. But, we get what we pay for and this is still the best built laptop out there, I think.

Our architects, designers and engineers were unanimous. We ordered 38 Surface Pros.

Apple is fast losing its hard-earned reputation.

Why did they choose Surface Pro over Surface Book? Personally, I prefer the SP form factor with kickstand but also see the benefits of SB's larger display and longer battery life.

Most of the eggs... not all.

As much as people think Apple doesn't care about the Mac... it's still a $20 Billion a year business.

That's not bad... it's simply dwarfed by Apple's iPhone revenue.

That's why to a sane CEO, computers would be a high priority item. They could have used the leverage of iOS to gain market share. Even subsidize pricing to get 25% to 50% of the PC market share so that when the iPhone business does crash, there is something substantial to fall back on. Instead we get 3+ year updates and emojis.

Although our company hasn't switched to Surface (more so other PC's), we have put a halt to any new Apple spending. The neglect shown to the MacPros and the cancellation of products has really got us thinking that we can no longer trust Apple. So although we would have bought some new MacBook Pro's, we aren't. For the first time, we are heavily researching the integration and ultimately replacement to PC's. This is solely due to a CEO that has decided to neglect their computer lineup. Congrats Tim.... You are slowly getting your way to be Apple Phone Corp.

Something is also terribly wrong with this comment. If they did not switch to Intel, they would have a difficult time supporting x86 architectures.

I am unsure of your comment as x86 would indicate Intel instruction sets (Intel or similar with AMD). Perhaps you are referring to adapting BSD underpinnings for OSX? However, I merely used it as a date/time reference and said after that time when things started... I didn't mean to imply anything else.

What a time to be alive. Microsoft taking the piss out of Apple.. and being right about it too.

Why do I just picture Apple as Dinesh from Silicon Valley, with his gold chain.. and Jared (Microsoft) makes fun of him... and he's like "Great. Now even ****ing Jared is busting my balls..."

LMAO!!!

I literary pissed myself falling out of my chair watchintg this. I've totally forgot about this show and never saw any piece of it until now.

THANK YOU this made my day!

One thing that could change a lot of minds on this board would be a real leap in the next version software, MacOS. A large UI change and some really innovative stuff that really leaps past Windows 10, which is not bad..... One can only hope.

One does have to keep hope alive, so true!

It amazes me that – to my knowledge – there isn’t some kind of big, offical battle giving each brand some punches.

Inept moron, he's a billionaire business man, you? Oh right.... posting here.

An alleged billionaire business man. And even so, what does being a successful businessman have to do with intelligence?

The surface book isn't perfect but it's a great protest buy. Apple will be fine, but the Mac is not a priority for their business model anymore.

I would bet that the only people moving from Apple to MS, are those that are not entrenched in the Mac ecosystem.

Not so. I am one such entrenched person. I wanted a new desktop. Something that wasn't glued down and hermetically sealed. Something that didn't require me to buy a monitor along with the computer and that requires removal the display to change the hard drive, something that didn't cost thousands of dollars and hasn't been updated in 3 years, i.e., something like my old G5 but of course not as big (and noisy). I went with a refurbished Dell with Windows 10, somewhat as an experiment, but so far so good. If Apple doesn't view me as a target customer, then I am reluctantly forced to go elsewhere. I've paid the "Apple tax" for years, but as they used to say, "no taxation without representation."

They have the experimental file system development going on which is interesting. For whatever reason at developers conference this didn't make the stage though. It was a website change that we had to find (or see the macrumor bot post a link to). For some...this stuff that should have reached the stage and not look at the new imessage...which we made like everyone else.

A few years when implemented things could get interesting...its just not the stuff apple keys on. Some cases yeah, most might not care. This was a developers conference though...file systems something kind of sort of cared about by quite a few in the audience really.

The point is iOS is awesome but Mac OS sucks especially when you consider locked into one hardware vendor. haha

Aside from not needing dongles and adapters to plug your stuff in and making sure you don't need to buy that thousand dollar art tablet?
what are you talking about? what art tablet? I bought thunderbolt 3->2 adapter and Apple's usb+hdmi adapter that's all
I use those adapters occasionally. most of the time I don't need them

Hey Microsoft. You and your big brother OS, can both suck my big fat thick mousepad.

Funny thing. 3 years ago that comment would have gotten tons of likes. But now many of us former mac addicts have realized that maybe Apple is what microsoft once was. So bashing microsoft just doesnt play so well here anymore

Apple trying to shove their way of doing things down our throats, (usb-c, no headphone jack, crappy icloud, app store, no upgradability, no options for computers except for thin, etc etc ect)
Apple feels MORE like big brother than we ever thought possible
