My dreams:

A. A customizable, configurable Mac desktop (i.e. a modern pre-2013 Mac Pro)
B. A non-soldered Mac laptop with powerful GPUs, no need for dongles of any kind, upgradeable drives, and a 17" screen (i.e. a modern 17" MBP like the 2011 I own).

Real-world options today:
A. Hackintosh. That's it.
B. Leave the Mac platform completely and go Razer Blade Pro. That's it. Which kinda negates item A.

I don't think in the age of superthin notebooks (which is obviously Apple's design direction, and apparently the Surface as well) we're going to see non-soldered primary chips (RAM, etc.), but I'd definitely agree on some better GPU options (hopeful with Apple's interest in AR). A 17" with a display density like a 15", and resolution to account for the display size, with 5 USB-Cs, two TB3 and an SD slot ... hmmm, since it's dream mode, I'll go ahead and say an option for at least a GTX 1070 :D

FWIW, I'm actually all in on USB-C, with a few TB3 ports, so I kind of don't mind dongling - though I might miss the convenience of an SD card slot.

FWIW #2, I've used a Razor Blade machine a few times, nice performance, great general packaging, awful trackpad, funky driver issues. Came _so_ close to getting one for one of our portable xR demo machines, wound up with a different, less portable, more powerful option (that also has an awful track pad and driver jankiness ...).

I still prefer MacOS, I'm old school *NIX, I spend a ton of time in terminal, I _way_ prefer using is for opensource based projects, love the free dev tools, doing iOS dev I'm in XCode, and for general computing, I just prefer it (photo management, video editing). As a professional I also need end-to-end support of hardware + software, some commercial apps, which is why - when anyone asks - I don't forsake Apple and MS run desktop Linux :)

The fact that "Windows rot" is even a term should tell us something, and full-time AV programs go hand-in-hand with 'slowdown'.

In general, I've experienced personally, and in the 25+ years I've been doing "this" (you know, that ...) professionally, more over time performance degradation and runtime funk on Windows vs. MacOS or various Linux flavors (not specifically attributable to AV products).

Little competition? Everybody is running circles around Apple these days... And what’s Cook & Co doing? Nothing! Just counting their profits and pleasing investors instead of giving their customers something to be proud of again.

The Apple of today is past it’s prime. I really wonder how their employees see their own products. I remember a few keynotes back that they were reacting like they had taken sleeping pills.

I think two years and Cook will resign, leaving a company who’s lost it shine after years of working very hard to become a recognizable brand. Cook & Co managed in less than five years to turn a vibrant, nimble company into an overpriced elderly home.

Actually they are turning their back on their traditional fan base and focusing on gimmicks that appeal to the emoji generation . It's turning into an emoji company trying to be super hip and cool run by old men .... Angela like all her other appointments has helped out rising the prices .... profits are up while more and more traditional fans leave.

Problem with aiming at the young.... they switch so quickly ...

I find it amusing how someone could treat Windows as such as POS OS, when it's powering so many businesses

Windows 10 is okay, but Windows is prevalent because of vendor lock-in and exclusivity. Generally speaking, most business software is only available on Windows. There is effectively no choice.

Secondly, popularity and quality are two completely different metrics. For example, the Transformers movie franchise sells a lot more tickets and makes a lot more money than most movies, but they are also complete garbage.

I wonder if 25% of them will fail in the first year like the previous generation. not really worth it microsoft.

The OS isn't that complicated, or rubbish - and let's not pretend macOS is some kind of perfect OS either.

Windows used to be a good os but sadly the last decent version was windows 7, everything after has been terrible, especially with spyware 10.

Hardware looks awesome. The irony is that Microsoft —the software giant—has a software problem. They will be in a world of mega hurt if they can't come up with a compelling multi-platform software strategy.

Anyone who says "too bad it runs Windows" clearly hasn't used Windows lately.

I have tried the full Windows experience full time (and for a while) after well over a decade of using a Mac exclusively and while I would say that I definitely prefer macOS, I don't think Windows is bad. In fact, we are slowly approaching OS parity where both platforms are very stable, have awesome features and are fast and fluid.

Whatever the preference, I would not bet against Windows at this point. It's moving in the right direction and fast.

I spend 8-10 hours a day on Windows at work and it is still horrible compared to MacOS. Too many issues and the user experience just fails.

Be careful about spreading misinformation. The new Edge browser is not "Internet Explorer with a new name". It is a fully-reborn browser.

Stale in terms of appearance? Is that more important to you over things like reliability, efficiency and productivity? macOS wins hands-down in those areas.

Yep, and Microsoft is bringing it to mobile as a piece of their continuity solution.

Over time, the benefit of Apples ecosystem is going to slowly erode as other vendors work together to build heterogeneous alternatives that work across multiple vendors and platforms. As that happens, the staleness of Apple's approach is going to become more evident. By staleness, I mean Apple deciding for you which technologies you get to use on which platforms.

The reality is that the Surface Book doesn't have an Apple alternative, and you'd need to by an iPad Pro and a Macbook Pro to have any kind of comparison.

They have one...

"Windows rot" isn't a term, its BS sprouted continuously by people who dont know better. I dont believe in luck or coincidence so If I can run a windows 10 box with multiple VMs, media servers, etc simultaneously and not have an issue...so can anyone else.

I agree with you when looking what they've been done with messages. But the youngsters over here want freedom and total customizable phones. Many of the youngsters over here find the iPhone the perfect solution for elderly people. They want the latest tech and certainly not that big bezel 8 phone.
Samsung and huawei are trending over here. But also in part because lots of Apple services don’t work (Apple Pay) or are too expensive (iTunes) and everyone is using WhatsApp over here.

Twice as powerful, but I don't recall reading anything about a cpu?

Ok...just looked...an 8650U? Yeah, load of BS from MS...that's nowhere close to 2x as powerful. Marketing crap like that pisses me off...

I didn't see the article refer to the weight of both products? Does the video bring it up? If not, why?

Am I the only one that thinks Apple is getting confusing for customers:
- 8 different iPhones
- 5 different MacBooks
When Steve Jobs returned to Apple after being fired, the first thing he did was get rid of all the duplicate products.
I wish he could come back again.
Not sure what business Apple wants anymore anyway. Just iOS/devices ?? Their new retail configuration dedicates more space for iPhone cases than computer hardware.

Eh... 8th generation quad core cpu vs older generation dual core? Plus you forgot (for your own convenience) the NVidia 1050/1060 vs Intel Iris? That could be easily 2x as powerful. Seems there is not much reason to get pissed off about.

Actually Microsoft long term planning has paid off. You can now have a MacBook Pro and iPad in one with the same software. Each release Microsoft is perfecting it while we need two different expensive devices for apple’s solution. If Apple keeps innovating at the pace they've been done the last five years they surely will be needing those billions rather sooner than later.

Windows 10 is as stable as Mac OS is today. Same for viruses. Where Apple stalled these last five years everybody else has been delivering and perfecting their products. Kudos to Microsoft.

Windows has come a long way. It's a lot better than what people think.
Hmm Just spent several hours trying to find why a game on my son's Asus doesn't work and it was the graphics driver. Auto update said it was the latest and everything was fine but in fact you need to go to the Geforce site and download it yourself to be sure because update doesn't really work properly.
Wanted to prepare a USB key for my daughter and knowing it'll be used on a Windows machine, went to the Asus which said it was 200mb. Eventually had to reformat it on the mac to get it up to 8Gb
My wife was complaining her .pdf file was too big at 2.9mb so I used preview and Quartz filter to make it a lot smaller- about 650kb. I don't know if you can do that on windows but I've never seen it.
I also had to run maintenance on the registry and as my dad bought a new HP, so had to uninstall all the bloatware on that for him.
Just another typical week with Windows.
But it is a lot better I'll give you that

It has to in order to keep up. If these were cars, the Pro would be 1500 lbs. and 500 clean, reliable HP. The Surface would be a beast at 3200 lbs. and 1000 HP piston knocking, missing hunk of crap.

Or like comparing the Challenger HellCat to a Ferrari.
