This ... not to mention Notes, Reminders, etc ... Between phone, ipad, watch, mac, as well as integrating family members in those things, messages, notes and reminders is the key ... until this happens Surface has no place in my world ... 3rd party apps just dont cut it for these things ...

And Windows is just a hot mess ...

It was kind of sarcastic. I literally am frozen into iOS because of iMessage. I’ve had friends go to try android and messages just don’t appear even after using Apple’s official logout tool.

Really... have you watched an Apple keynote? I'm pretty sure they talk about specs. They even give their processor a goofy name like "bionic". Seriously?

Apple really talks about specs in areas where they lead. In mobile, nobody touches their performance.

In most other aspects, they compare to their own products. "Fastest iMac ever." "20% brighter," etc, etc.

It's WINDOWS!!! I don't care how fast or glorious it is, whatever version from vista to 10 or whatever heck their latest version is, it's WINDOWS operation which I HATE with a passion. Very very different than Mac OS X that I'm very very much in tuned with and I just am a sucker for Apple products. But that's my preference.

That's a perfectly valid reason. I was indifferent to windows before. Not that I'm older, I hate it (despite win 10 really getting better). I chalk it up to being old, cranky, and working much longer hours than before. When I come home I do not have the time to solve some BS issue with my computer.

I just wish Apple had a tablet capable Mac. I wonder if we will see it when the MacBook Pro finally moves to the same chip family as the iPhone and iPad. Drawing on the iPad is best in class, I truly love it. I'd love to see what Apple could bring to the table on convertible tablet that runs Mac OS.

Just because you've never experienced something doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Ads can easily be disabled. Nothing is installed without my permission and analytics are not spyware. Additionally one can disable what is shared. You are just spreading FUD. Windows 10 is every bit as good as MacOS. I run both platforms and they are more similar than dissimilar. Hell I have WAY more problems with freaking iOS bugs than I do with Windows or MacOS. Although, I run into issues on both of those platforms as well.

Windows 10 is worst than you think.
It really isn't.

Honestly, I don't know anyone who says something like you did who doesn't have an ideological axe to grind. If you've used computer operating systems for over a decade (and, ideally, 2+ decades), then you're familiar with their evolution in both features and functionality. And if you have that experience and are objective about it, then I don't see how you can conclude that Windows 7 and Windows 10 are, relative to their predecessors, anything other than fantastic steps forward.

Yes, there's still some clunkiness to them--because they ARE Windows--but the same can be said for macOS in a different way. For both, the seeming clunkiness is encountered only if you are a more advanced user and are trying to dive into files behind the scenes.

The obsession with taking a dump on Windows because it's Windows needs to stop. It doesn't help anyone.

Glad you are happy being a "sucker". I got tired of it... really. Its funny to me that people speculate Microsoft might abandon the Surface line, which I personally think is ridiculous... yet Apple has left the Mac line on life support, only doing enough to get by and keep milking huge profits from products they rarely update and do nothing innovative with.

Nothing, huh? You mean like four ports of flexible Thunderbolt 3 offering prodigious I/O bandwidth and USB-C connectivity on Apple's latest MBPs? Or DCI-P3 wide gamut displays? Or the wide gamut 5K display on my 4.0 GHz i7 iMac, with super fast SSD? Or the iMac Pro with loads of processing power and I/O bandwidth that will be released next month?

I'm too balls-deep in the Apple ecosystem, but this does look nice. I've been forced to use Windows at work, and no way I'd leave MacOS for it, but it's not all that bad, just not as good/smooth/intuitive. Let's face it, MacOS hasn't been the pillar of stability lately, either.

You took the words right out of my mouth. If I didn't have so much Apple-specific junk, I'd give this thing some serious, serious consideration. It's the mobile beast I've been wanting for years now.

Awesome. Even if the Surface isn’t great, at least if it gets good press about specs it pushes Apple to do better.

Personally even if this was all true, and even though I like windows 10, macOS is better and I work faster with a Mac. The touchpad is fantastic and I do like the keyboard.

It helps MR fanbois preserve the bubble of brand enthusiasm which is critical to their identity. Its not really hurting anyone. Anyone who uses computers at a high level is somewhat agnostic about apple pc culture wars.

The one thing I noticed in this video is how they almost NEVER show it being used on tablet mode. Like ever. The entire ad is just showing it being put together all sexy or the quality keyboard or the apps or whatever. But you don’t see someone just sitting down and hold it without the keyboard attached. Which leads you to think...why didn’t they just make it a laptop? Why a 2 in 1?

Microsoft, like Apple can multi-task.

Are those people who worked on the phones transferable to laptops?

The truth is that Microsoft is no longer focused on mobile phones. They have extra people resources to focus on the things that people want in laptops.

That’s WHY Microsoft makes Surface in the first place. Regular PC OEMs are simply not competitive anymore. Sure each has some machines that ARE better than Macs but they don’t even advertise those or sell them in stores anymore.. they’re just for business customers as retail customers won’t pay ire than like $800 for a Windows 10 notebook anymore. And $800 (or less) notebooks are crap. Half the drivers don’t work and the hardware is fragile and buggy. Even on expensive corporate notebooks each OEM cuts some corner.. crappy trackpad, poor webcam & mic, etc. so Windows isn’t getting the best showing possible.

Microsoft is trying to grab some of that sweet profit margin Apple gets, and drag OEMs out of the gutter.

This is even more disconcerting.

no, they're still too high - just now so are microsoft's. ;)
Apple's prices have never been too high as Microsoft have proven. In order to compete on the same level as Apple they have had to produce high quality equipment.

It is impossible to produce equipment at this level and retail it at a low price. Hence you get what you pay for. For low price equipment and sub standard quality head to the fodder manufacturers such as HP, Dell, Toshiba etc...

I like the idea of replacing a MacBook I'm currently using as a notebook/desktop with this (for desktop I use a hengedock which is awesome).

It still begs the question of how I can best emulate the Apple ecosystem if I wind up using a Surface, and possibly a smaller Surface for the tablet solution. Too much about the ecosystem I take for granted (I never even thought about how I'd emulate an iCloud Photo Library across different non-Apple devices for example).

As an OS, Windows is better and has less problems than current versions of mac OS. The last two releases of Windows 10 made my laptop faster and snappier. I would say that MS is currently superior to Apple for building quality software.

Microsoft is improving Windows 10, Apple is adding emojis. MS needs a better UI in general for all of their products. People may have reason to hate Windows in the past, but what reasons do you have to love mac OS today?

I see why they make comparisons to macbooks but in the end Surface runs Windows and Macs run OS X.

I love how they imagine that cramming more power into it somehow will negate the negative impact of the fact that it was made by (or at least for) Microsoft, and runs "Windows" 9 or whatever they're calling the version that immediately followed 8... I really don't care HOW powerful it allegedly is, if it comes with or can only run Crippleware like Windows.

I cannot reward a company that has done the nefarious and outright criminal things this one has done, by ever patronizing them again in any way shape or form. They are the poster child for what is wrong with the economic system in use in this country. (I refer here not to Capitalism, because that's not really what we have.). I therefore do what I can to, as they say, "vote with my wallet," and Microsoft does not get my "vote" ever again, no matter what they do.

Ever.

I take that back. I suppose if they pay back all the money they have stolen over the decades, with interest, and make whole all the people they've injured and all the companies they've damaged or destroyed, I'd consider using something they made. I'd consider it. That consideration would go like this.

"What, they gave back ALL the money and now all the people who benefited from all that company's malfeasance are BROKE, and living in abject poverty as they should be? Great! Now I can think about using some wretched pile of trash they've made. Mmmmmm... considering... NO."

Also, since it doesn't run Apple iMacOS-X (or whatever they're calling it this week,) it's truly comparing apples and oranges. Or more accurately, comparing apples and horse-apples.

I really like it that the Surface can be a tablet or a laptop computer. Apple is really missing out on this huge market which does not exclude either device. I want all the best of MacOS and iOS on one device that adapts to my needs rather than having to have separate devices: tablet and notebook computer.

While we're at it I also want full legacy support for all older iOS and Mac applications back to the beginning. Apple's quite capable of doing this. I don't upgrade our company or family systems to new hardware and OSs because we have legacy software we still need to use. 5 years is an eternity in OS time but just a blip in a human life. Apple needs to let us keep access to our lifetime of data which means keeping access to applications.

I don't see how this computer not running people's choice of OS excuses apple from keeping pace from a hardware performance standpoint. I've kept my 2013 MacBook Pro longer than any computer I've EVER OWNED because they have yet to offer a compelling upgrade. And no, touchbars are not compelling. I'm not looking for nifty fun "features," I'm looking for a reliable and powerful mobile workhorse for 3d rendering and realtime work.

The Surface with the same storage and RAM is $300 more than the 15” MBP (MBP has 16GB standard, Surface starts at 8GB).

The Surface has a much better GPU, slightly better CPU, but has slower RAM, fewer ports and lacks DCI-P3. Seems like it’s a close call depending on your needs.

You can’t really say either device is far better than the other.

Windows has come a long way. It's a lot better than what people think.

It would have to be.

I used it daily. It's fine, more or less, but still really stupid in that stupid windows way.

"Can't modify the name because that item is in use" alone is enough to prove windows is crap. 30 years of that same nonsense, can't even tell when an application is running or not.
