It will be interesting to see actual reviews and tests. We've been down this road before and some of Microsoft's claims of superiority in the past were written very creatively by the marketing department. And as some commenters noticed, the claims are a little fast and loose because the higher performing versions often cost more than a Mac.

I just took over a 4 year old MacBook Pro to use as my daily system while our PC systems of the same age are being replaced. The Mac runs like new and looks like new. And it's still worth money while many of the PC's can barely be given away.

But in our corporate environment, it's the words of our IT manager that says it all "Mac users are the least trouble - we hardly hear from you." Macs aren't perfect and they may not always be the fastest - but they tend to provide a high quality user experience consistently over its life.

You're right it's not half bad... it's 100% bad. :D

Seriously though, I try and avoid using Windows as much as possible. The way it handles fonts and high resolution screens is poor, I can't stand the file explorer and the UI is a cluttered mess and a mishmash of old and new ideas. The whole thing seems to have been engineered to ensure the average user's PC will slow to a crawl within a year or so of light use. Perhaps this is a tactic to increase the sale of new PCs.;)

Microsoft should just scrap all their old code and start again from scratch.
I’m on Window 7 using a 2010 i5 and a Win 7 install from 2011. No problems here. Stable except for outlook which has always been glitchy since I started using it in 1999. I would upgrade to 10 but I don’t like their forced upgrade system.

The $1,999 13.5" with the GTX 1050 2 GB has an i7-8650U, which is Kaby Lake Refresh, so 4 cores and 8 threads.

Alright, well that's pretty good I suppose, especially since I paid $1999 for my 512gb 16gb 7th gen kaby i5 13" MBP. I get more ram and ssd, but that i7 quad +1050 is a huuge performance gain. This seems to make the Mac win price/performance only in the sub $1499 models

I also just noticed that they claim 17 hours, not 10 hours. Caint wait to see if it's true! The last thing to tempt me into getting one of these eventually is proof that the hardware issues are resolved.

I’m surprised people aren’t complaining about the bezels as there are other Windows laptops with much smaller bezels. I get why Microsoft can only compare to Apple but the tech media doesn’t. Why aren’t they comparing to other Windows laptops?
Because M$ will catch heck if they compared to other Windows machines... how are Lenovo, Dell, or HP going to react if M$ is poaching THEIR customers. Aiming at Mac puts them “outside” traditional OEMs. Never mind that M$ is selling a $2500 laptop while PC OEMs are lucky to get half that.

People in this thread are saying windows has gotten better... guys, windows is so, so much worse than it used to be. There are literal ads in the start menu. Windows randomly installs crap applications without your permission, and computers come loaded with so much third party bloatware its not even funny. And Windows is basically spyware now - tracking everything you do and sending to Microsoft. Don't like internet explorer? Oh look, it got renamed and Microsoft helpfully pinned it to your desktop without your permission.

Ads can easily be disabled. Nothing is installed without my permission and analytics are not spyware. Additionally one can disable what is shared. You are just spreading FUD. Windows 10 is every bit as good as MacOS. I run both platforms and they are more similar than dissimilar. Hell I have WAY more problems with freaking iOS bugs than I do with Windows or MacOS. Although, I run into issues on both of those platforms as well.

It took a while but the competition is finally putting out consistent compelling products. Too bad iMessage keeps me from trying anything else. Lol

This ... not to mention Notes, Reminders, etc ... Between phone, ipad, watch, mac, as well as integrating family members in those things, messages, notes and reminders is the key ... until this happens Surface has no place in my world ... 3rd party apps just dont cut it for these things ...

And Windows is just a hot mess ...

Sounds awesome! The only thing I would have liked is a new hinge system and Thunderbolt 3.

It drives me nuts how the surface books don't close all the way.

Not interested in a Windows anything but wouldn't mind a MBP/iPad convertible type device. I think it's really the perfect "transitional" device.

While true and welcome it’s still a maintenance headache compared to macOS.

Based on what exactly? I use Windows 10 for my PC tower, linux for work/vms/writing software, and MacOS for my personal laptop. While I personally don't care about any of the OS's, Win10 is by far the most dumb friendly OS. Linux has config files, sysfs, procfs etc, MacOS has similar config files and tons of command line features to make changes. Not to mention, one of the most useful things about Win is the snap to half screen, MacOS default window management is horrendous. The only saving grace is the Mac track pad. By far the best.

I use Windows 10 at work and at home and I absolutely love it.

With that said, I will never figure out Microsoft's insistence on comparing their products to Apple.

The Mac vs PC commercials were funny. But any comparison Microsoft tries to make to Apple just seems petty.

Dear Microsoft. After 30+ years of making crap you are finally making great software. Just focus on making great hardware that showcases your great software. Leave the comparisons to the tech media.

MS is taking a page from Apple's playbook in terms of pricing. I'm very happy with my first gen Surface Book. If I were to level any complaint, it would be the screen size. Given that there's a 15" model, now I'm very tempted. Unfortunately, like the MBP, 2,400 for a 15" laptop is just too high imo, especially for only 8GB of ram.

Microsoft should have stopped "innovating" with Windows 7. Windows 10 has just been an attempt to repair 8. Apple has made the4 same innovation mistake with OS X 10.7. Then tried to repair it with 10.8.4. Then made it worse with 10.10 and has been trying to fix that rather than going back to 10.6 and just updating the security issues.

Microsoft are the worst kind of liars. They do it for money.

I’m glad there is competition and good for Microsoft directly mention whom they’re going against. But have you noticed that as these big two battle it out, we the consumers are paying a high price for it? I’m just noticing that these gadget prices are scyrocketing as they get upgraded each time...and we’re still buying.
That’s WHY Microsoft makes Surface in the first place. Regular PC OEMs are simply not competitive anymore. Sure each has some machines that ARE better than Macs but they don’t even advertise those or sell them in stores anymore.. they’re just for business customers as retail customers won’t pay ire than like $800 for a Windows 10 notebook anymore. And $800 (or less) notebooks are crap. Half the drivers don’t work and the hardware is fragile and buggy. Even on expensive corporate notebooks each OEM cuts some corner.. crappy trackpad, poor webcam & mic, etc. so Windows isn’t getting the best showing possible.

Microsoft is trying to grab some of that sweet profit margin Apple gets, and drag OEMs out of the gutter.

Yes, and Apple does everything only out of the goodness of heart. Apple does not care about money at all. They are the most philanthropic company I know. They produce in China because the Chinese have tinier hands, not for the money....
