I had a 2nd gen Xbox, I believe (before they got skinny) and I can tell you that heat was a problem. Of course, technical issues aren't a big deal if a company will stand behind it. But when mine failed, Microsoft wanted $120 to fix it, plus to keep my Xbox for 12 weeks while they fixed.

Of course, that's 12 weeks during which I'm still paying for Xbox live, which is completely absurd.

Like I said, I love the system. Their customer service is horrendous.

Not only did I not pay the $120, but I also charged back all of the games I had purchased and not finished, plus the balance of my XBL membership. In total it was greater than the $120 they wanted to fix it.

Well i had the opposite experience, not sure how they wanted to charge you for it as it is well documented that MS covers the RLOD issue. I went though Five 360's and did not pay an extra cent.

I am pretty sure you can't connect a Mac.

You do know that MR is not just a forum to discuss the Mac right...? Clearly the name was not chosen with the hindsight of it's popularity, or by the likelyhood that Apple would diversify it's product range, or abandon the 'Mac' in favour of high volume toys and gadgets..., depending on which school of thought you subscribe to..:)

I personally found the presentation rather "bleh".

The presentation was too much focused on the smart TV aspect, and too little on what most people want a xBox for: games.

For the time being, I'd say most people are pumped about the PS4 than the xBox One.

With all these complaints about ugliness, it is fascinating how many people obviously sit and stare at their gaming console to pass the time. I tend to plug mine into a TV and power outlet and play some video games.

But hey, don't let me put you off buying your PS4s and AppleTVs if you want something 'good looking' to stare at.

I think this is most interesting to see where this pushes Apple TV.

A few notable things MS has included is voice/motion controls, a tv guide w/ tv pass through, and a television series (Halo).

I dislike the fact that Kinect will be always in the package; it surprises me nobody talks about that. What if you don't use your Xbox in the living room? What if you don't like being watched all the time by your gaming console? Seems like a good reason to go for the PS4, though I prefer the exclusives for the Xbox. However I probably won't be buying a next-gen console soon; it's better to wait at least a year for cheaper consoles, more games and developers who really know how to handle the powerful hardware.

meh I've never used kinect and dont intend to, but that wont be enough of a reason for me to switch to a PS4. It's hardly like some guy at Xbox HQ is sitting there watching you play.

I just want to hear how it works as a games machine and what the price is, I have no interest in Kinect or using it for media

Agree with some of the others on the look of it, when I am playing a game I look at the screen, so this doesn't bother me

Since reading a few rumours I've updated my list of deciding features:

1. Controller (Xbox has already won here)
2. Voice/Movement control - not the quality but the option to NOT use it. I absolutely do not want to be required to use either of these things, and it looks like Xbox One will require the Kinect at all times.
3. Used game policy - Despite all the negativity about Microsoft's possible "used game fee" I think it could work. Will have to see what sony's policy is on this.
4. Console cost
5. Online cost/Quality

What makes you say that? as far as i can tell the ps4 controller has more functionality with the touch pad. The xbox one just seems like a refined rehash of the 360.

Not ideal, but for number 2, I have read you can just put it behind the tv facing the wall, then it will be ignored, prefer to have the option to buy the xbox without it though (additional cost for something I would never use)

on number 3, one of the worst things I saw about this is if you have more than one xbox in the house (parents/kids as example), you would have to pay the full game price again if you want to play the game on another console (with a different id)

going to stick with my 360 for a while longer, some of the things on the new xbox sound interesting, but not must haves for me

Jeebus! That might be the ugliest console I've ever seen.

I think the original PS2 and first Xbox take that mantle. The PlayStation 2 was hideous, utterly hideous.

For many, the 360 pad is as close to controller perfection as any controller has come.

Me either. But then again - we're on MacRumors. So I imagine people will suggest that they don't mind paying for a quality product vs M$ (their epithet not mine)

I bought my PS3 at least 6-7 years ago. Have no desire/need to change it. the $399 I paid for it (which I really just use as a blu-ray player and not gaming at all) was well worth it. At the time - I figured - ok - slightly expensive (but great) blu-ray player for me - and if I ever want - it also happens to play some cool games.

Well worth the $399 and has had great longevity.

6-7 years ago the ps3 was around 800 dollars.

Will it have the same faulty thermal design as the 360 that leads to failure after a few years?

No thanks, Microsoft, I'll pass.

I love everything about Xbox except for its reliability and the way customer support treats you when it does eventually fail.

I always found the support staff really helpful and good when I had problems.

Dont your mac books have a webcam built in. BILL GATES IS WATCHING ME OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!

^This. I'm not interested in the touch pad at all and the 360 controller it basically my perfect controller. I also find dualshocks very uncomfortable. It's basically all down to personal preference :) (Plus the vibrating joysticks may be a cool feature)

2. Yeah I think it's a bit silly forcing you to use the kinect (well not use but have it connected), although I suppose they are just trying to speed uptake of the tech.

3. I agree this is one of the worst parts (although it won't affect me personally), Microsoft need to tread carefully here to avoid losing a lot of customers to Sony.

I think the original PS2 and first Xbox take that mantle. The PlayStation 2 was hideous, utterly hideous.

I actually quite liked the look of the PS2 (Still have one for the occasional game of Driv3r or SW Battlefront II). It looks a lot better than the ridiculous PS3 IMO! :p

I agree almost completely with this. Tell me which one has better quality games compared to all in cost and that'll be my choice. Things like Kinect only serve to drive me away if forced on me.

I was impressed with XBOX One. They did great job. Was very glad Ballmer wasn't there! No need for him.

One thing that really blew me away is the voice command thing especially the "On" and "TV" thing. I wondered if that's the same "strategic" that Apple is supposed to announce with ATV or TV.

Keep it up MS!

Oh come on, you mean you don't want the guy running around on stage, yelling, and sweating more than a 400 pound defensive lineman?

Fair to say that is not the standard of design we are use to on these forums!

---

It looks like my blu ray/receiver. Really uninteresting.

Wow, 12 pages so far of this garbage. If MS were stupid enough to go the Apple design route and make it skinny and crippled, you'd all be screaming at them for copying apple's design.

Instead they come up with their own design, and you're so high on Apple's kool-aid all you can do is ignore the product and insult the look. It's not a bad look, just clearly not stolen from apple. It really is impossible to win with you people.

No wonder people laugh at apple users.

Not sure how this type of thing works outside the UK

One thing that would persuade me to get it, add in a tuner so I can receive Freeview and also record from it

I believe it has an HDMI in for things like freeview boxes. I'm not sure how it will work and I'm sure quality will be hugely variable depending on what unit you connect but I'm hoping it will be fairly simple to record the incoming HDMI signal for later playback! Plus it would allow me to have 3 HDMI devices connected to my monitor at a time. :p

Well presumably you could connect a mac to the HDMI in... ask a stupid question...
