If Apple can't figure out how to roll out a new phone after their last 2 phones releases were so lacking in innovation, with explicit excuses from Phil Schiller and Tim Cook that they were preparing something special for the 10th anniversary, then it proves Apple doesn't know how to handle it's **** anymore. I mean this is almost as bad as the Republicans screaming about repeal and replace of Obamacare for years and then offering that ridiculous turd of legislation to replace it.

Mostly I think this is all more vapid speculation, but if true the worst thing Apple could do is release this phone prematurely and dangle it like a carrot they keep pulling away from consumers wanting to buy it around Christmas. I think if this happens a lot of people will move to Android and many will finally get tired of Apple vacillating about innovation but never delivering it.

Being in high demand but hard to buy is annoying for customers, but no it isn't going to send too many customers over to Android. Apple's issue is that some cell phone sales are simple walk in sales. Many folks simply use their smartphone these days until it breaks and then they buy what is available. There might be another month or two when those the cellphone stores have all the latest Android handsets in stock but no iPhone 8.

It's so strange how Steve Jobs stopped announcing products at MacWorld because he said it made no sense for Apple to rush products around someone else's schedule. Thus began the era of the Apple Special Event where Apple only announced product when it was presumably ready to announce and ship product.

Maybe TC didn't get that memo. Time after time he announces product that Apple can't ship in quantity a timely manner after announcing it. Why does Apple do this when they control the announcement schedule? All it does is frustrate customers and kill impulsive purchases. Of late Apple's product announcement are really more like pre-announcements. Kinda reminds of the boy who cried wolf.

Steve said this when apple was selling a few million products per year. Now, it sells hundred of millions per quarter.

At this point, we can all copy and paste the same article every year...just replace the iPhone X, with whatever we think the new iPhone will be called.

Tim Cook hasn't announced anything.

This rumor is an unsubstantiated "report" (ie, speculation).

I would hardly say another level, yes they released a nice design but it's not without it's issues (fingerprint reader next to the camera, and a red tint on the screen.) they did good with the design but it still uses TouchWiz and it's nothing that Apple can't beat when they come out with the iPhone 8 and even the 7S later this year.

Red tint? Blown way out of proportion. And don't forget that Samsung is making the iPhone's OLED display.

Samsung and LG has done enough to raise the bar by introducing models that outshine their predecessors. And at least on the Samsung model if the fingerprint scanner is too hard to get to you have many other choices that can be used all at the same time. The Note 8 will correct the fingerprint reader situation just like the criticism they received for using cheap plastic. The Note 8 will be the real competition for the next iPhone.

It may sound like I'm a Samsung fanboy but the one thing I hate is their software updating policy plus lag and for that reason I got a iPhone 7 Plus over the Note 7 last year. And with the recent speed test the S8 still can't beat my iPhone 7 Plus. But I will give credit where credit is due; the S8 is the best looking phone on the market hands down followed by the LG G6 and then iPhone. All I'm saying is that Apple needs to step their game up big time. Apple use to have the best design, best materials and best size of any smartphone. The only title Apple holds is the fastest and best updated phone on the market. Even the app stores are on par.

iPhone Update Program

Carrier contracts.

It doesn't take a genius.

At this point, we can all copy and paste the same article every year...just replace the iPhone X, with whatever we think the new iPhone will be called.

Yes. And this article will surface at least once more after today. Ming Kuo is only predicting what we already know year after year.

But, if the iPhone brings significant changes this year, I can only imagine preorders will have expectancy delivery dates well past 8-10 weeks for some receiving their after it's available. And if a new color launches, add that to the equation as well.

iPhones are not food and there are lots of other current models that are just fine for a job. No need to go all hyped-up about it.

The more I hear the name "iPhone 8", the more I think it would be a stupid name for the upcoming premiere/pro iPhone when it will launch alongside the iPhone 7s. iPhone Pro, iPhone Edition, or iPhone X would be so much better.

Number 8 is considered an the luckiest number in Chinese culture. Many consumers will pay considerably more for something just because it has "8" in it.

.

Because launching in one country only didn't constrain supply and force high demand? Anyway we can go in circles but it always launches in certain places first and the days of you seeing a rebate of any kind are long gone. So your previous points about what a dim wit Tim Cook is seem to be unfounded.

Because at the time the iPhone was an experiment and Apple only had one licensed Cellco -- Cingular/ATT for sale only in one country. Grey market, by definition is the distribution of goods outside it's intended distribution region. You can't count those because that demand was is markets Apple was not actively selling or marketing the iPhone at the time.

Also I didn't say Tim Cook was a dim wit -- you did. I was questioning why he announced product so often when he knows Apple doesn't have supply to meet any kind of demand, not for weeks, but months.

If the shortage is that severe then why bother launching it at all? There's nothing more stupid than offering a product with 4 - 6 weeks before most who want it can get their hands on it. It's sounding increasing likely that I'll be passing on this when I've been waiting for over a year to upgrade my phone knowing the 10 year anniversary edition was coming. Sounds like I'll be on the 6S for a while.

This "shortage" issue even happens on the "S" model release which is basically the same phone as the previous generation so why the shortage then?

Right, but price was much higher for first iPhone because you had to pay full price and you still had to get a carrier contract that was the same price as if you had gotten a subsidized phone. And frankly folks didn't really understand how good the first iPhone was.

Agreed, but my original point was there was immediate supply to those who wanted the phone. The poster was trying to make it sound like there was no supply to be had which is false.

Ironically though today's iPhone is more expensive than the original. Like the first iPhone, the current one in the U.S. isn't subsidized and is about the same price as the original $599 price tag of the original 8GB. If you finance today there is still a contract.

I had to wait 6 weeks to get the AirPods.
Now THAT was rediculous!

Doesn't matter. Just because Apple is selling more units doesn't absolve them from proper planning. If Apple is going to be the leader it has to act like the leader and not a fumbling start up.

Agreed. But plenty of products that TC has announced did have long shipping delays. It's nothing new here and this story hints at similar. I'm just reacting to the story. Hopefully, yes, there will be no delay or only brief ones. That would be refreshing.

It doesn't take a genius, but it does take a soothsayer to properly infer anything from your post. Care to expand?

We've heard it all before but after the [still out of stock] AirPods this is actually believable.

i am in no hurry, i am fully satisfied with my iPhone 7 Plus :)

I was thinking the same thing. I got lucky and found a pair of AirPods at my local Apple Store, so that's quelling my gadget lust at the moment. I've also got a Moment Lens case on order, and who knows how long before they get their iPhone "8" case up and going, I won't get my 7 Plus case until May!
