Uh oh, I found a fly in the ointment: I'll be out of the country in January so I need an unlocked phone instead of one attached to my Verizon account. Some googling indicates I can only buy one at a physical Apple Store?

Well at least I'll know on the 3rd if I'll have an X for my trip.

Edit: looks like I can actually buy a SIM-free iPhone through the online Apple Store. Just confirmed by trying with an iP8. Now whether I get one for my trip is in the hands of the FSM!

The unlocked phones go faster... if you're paying cash outright, then they're all technically "unlocked" and you should check the language on the Apple site for phones where you paid full cash as I think it refers to those as unlocked.

Have fun on preorder day boys! I'll be on my 8.

But seriously, I hope scalpers don't screw everyone over.

Which seems like the bigger issue when it comes to the divisive attitude toward the X.

Is it the notch or FaceID?

Could I please have advice from some early adoption experts?

What is the best way to score a new iPhone X: go to a brick and mortar Apple Store on the 3rd, or pre-order at 3am on the 27th? I'd like to have one before December.

The best way to score a new iPhone X is to go to a glass cube Apple Store.

I dunno, I don't buy this one. Something tells me those who want one will get it.

Seems like the biggest thing people talk about is the price. So that'll stifle sales of the X. And then the fact the X exists will stifle sales of the 8.

Note to anyone thinking of an iPhone X - Your content will appear smaller than it does on your iPhone 6+ or 7+. The iPhone X screen is dimensionally narrower in width when holding it upright while it is longer due to the removal of bezels. This allows Apple to advertise the screen as 5.8" diagonal, but content size will be restricted by the width of the display. It's also not a true 5.8", since video playback size will need to be reduced in order to avoid cropping or having the dreaded "notch" interfere with your playback.

Overall I'd say the iPhone X is sexy, but in some ways it's a step backward. I would be standing in line if the iPhone X had the same screen width as the iPhone 7+, plus the added vertical screen real estate, but sadly that is not what we got. We basically got something slightly larger than a non-plus iPhone with a taller screen that is not fully usable.

A few days after. But only because I had a moment where I was like "well I placed the order, let it play out." But when shipping estimates did not improve, I got impatient. iStockNow had been showing stock come and go since the launch. So even Apple wasn't entirely right about "none available at launch". I may not have gotten the phones on launch day, but it wasn't six weeks later either as it would have been if I'd waited on the pre-order.

Excellent, that's what I'll do then. Order at 3am AND visit an Apple Store at opening time. If I can buy one in person then I cancel the preorder.

I don't know about iStockNow...I just checked and they report that the iPhone X is now available, lol.

I believe for iPhone X you cannot buy carrier free iPhone , right now you don't have an option for iPhone X on the site but works with iPhone 8

While I ageee with you (I bought the 8+ this morning), I understand their marketing rationale. I felt their new MacBook pros with touch bar were ridiculously priced, and yet they sold. A year later and the price is dropping. This is Apple's pattern and it works for them: overprice the really cool new feature for early adopters then drop some for the people who don't feel the emotional need to buy immediately.
Yes people will buy on emotion and the 'cool' factor

You are right but nobody cares. Your wicked plan to deter some of us will not work. We want our talking poops and unicorns! Sorry, we will still be stumbling to our Apple Store Apps at 3:00 am Eastern playing the Apple Store App like a video game. (I'm just joking around with you, by the way. Humor doesn't always convey over the internet so I thought I'd best spell it out).

Actually if my husband's fumbling around on the iPad to buy our watches this morning is any indication, we won't be seeing our iPhone X phones until June. We don't pop up wide awake in the middle of the night like we used to when we were tending an infant.

Years into the making, and Timmy still couldn't secure a successful launch. I wouldn't expect anything less from the guy who was brought in to Apple by SJ for his expertise in operations.

It's so comfortable in the backseat criticizing someone whom you don't even know, or the full circumstances of the situation.

People have their own upgrade cycle but one thing with Apple their phones outlast other vendors in terms of longevity.

Well if it takes to long to get I will just skip it and get the XS, probably have plenty of those to go around.

It detered me big time. But even as rabid an Apple fan as I am, I have held on to my 5S for almost 4 years. I simply couldn't justify buying another phone sooner (just got the 8+). What can I say, but that Apple makes great products!
I'm trading in my 6 for the 8+ I just ordered! Its time!
I was going to wait for the X but figured that it might be 5 months before I get one so said what the
Heck and ordered the 8+..just hope it doesn't end up being to big ;(
Also the 8's are tried and true technologies so I may end up getting the Xs next year.
I got the watch 3 too, should be fun!

It doesn’t seem like the iPhone 8 stood a chance against the X. Most people rent/lease their phones under their carriers so the $1000 price point definitely won’t deter anyone from getting the better option.
maybe most in us, definitely not rule in many countries over the world

Yep, if folks want the X, they'll get it. I personally think it is way overpriced for what it has and how little it is really different from the 8. But as an example, the 8 is $29.12 / month and the X is $41.62 / month on Verizon. Most folks who can afford a new smartphone can afford an extra $12.50 / month to have the latest and greatest if they so desire. I'm not crazy about the design myself. I'll either keep my 7 or maybe get an 8.

Whoohoo! Enjoy! Gotta say I *love* my Series 2. I suspect you'll be very pleased with the 8+ for a few years (save yourself the cash for something else, eh?).

At $799 (8+) vs $999 (X), the price difference is not material. It's simply product segmentation and personal preference. Recent updates have been pretty transparent that the higher cost is related to supply chain bottle necks, e.g., OLED supply/cost.
