No, that's not about it. It also offers:

Augemented reality
A11 Bionic chip
Tru-Tone display
OLED/HDR display
Wireless charging
Glass backing
Portrait Mode lighting
Upgraded Camera with Dual OIS
Stainless steel
Better battery (Two hours added over iPhone 7)

What something is worth is only valued by what the consumer appreciates. So that's completely variable.

Most of the thins you listed are on iPhone 8 too…

Yep. Usable screen real estate is slightly better than the current 4.7 inch phones. Disappointing.

What are you talking about? X display is 5.8'', bigger than the Plus. not "slightly better than the current 4.7 inch phones"…

I wouldn’ t be surprised if apple came with a press release of a gold iphone x, before release of the iphone x. They just want to stimulate orders for an iphone 8/8 plus now, because people(especially in china) want a gold phone. When the initial run is over, they’ ll anounce they also will have a gold iphone X at release in very limited quantities.
If they would have announced it at the keynote, people would wait, and because of the low yields on the gold iphone x, they can’ t sell that much, and people would wait even longer. That is bad for q4/q3 resuts.

It sounds like a conspiracy, but mark my words. If apple can sell you a gold iphone 8/8+ now, instead of people having to wait for 2018 for a gold iphone x, they would.

This is not a fair statement. You can't state that Cook could not secure a successful launch, because the iPhone X has not even launched yet. If that means it takes longer for the iPhone X to launch, I don't want a rushed product to begin with. Not to mention, this is not going to stop the iPhone X from selling any less. This iPhone will sell out in under three minutes or less, and be the most successful iPhone likely ever.
Extremely constrained supply and selling out in three minutes would make it a failed launch. There should be no reason I have to wait until June to buy an iPhone X.

October 27th is gonna be a massive ''slaughter'' for the tens of millions of people around the world trying to get that iPhone X in the same minute ;)

If you order 5 minutes after the pre order starts, you'll get a confirmation email some what later with your shipping times '' April 22th-29th 2018":oops:
At that point you might as well wait for the 2018 iPhone. You're already half way there.

Sad...

Once you factor in the notch and the permanent unusable area at the bottom for the gesture space, I totally agree with this. The usable screen space will be around the same size anyway. Part of why I decided on the 8. (I also don't buy FaceID will be seamless in the first iteration.)

Where did you come up win June? That's a bit exaggerated. If you preorder and do so promptly, your chances will be greater of receiving it much earlier. Your definition of a failed launch doesn't equate to everyone else's experience who will receive their iPhone earlier based on preparation. What you're saying is more of self biased generalization.

At $799 (8+) vs $999 (X), the price difference is not material. It's simply product segmentation and personal preference. Recent updates have been pretty transparent that the higher cost is related to supply chain bottle necks, e.g., OLED supply/cost.
Could compare to ip8 which would be $300. Closer on size minus lens.

Uh oh, I found a fly in the ointment: I'll be out of the country in January so I need an unlocked phone instead of one attached to my Verizon account. Some googling indicates I can only buy one at a physical Apple Store?

Well at least I'll know on the 3rd if I'll have an X for my trip.

Edit: looks like I can actually buy a SIM-free iPhone through the online Apple Store. Just confirmed by trying with an iP8. Now whether I get one for my trip is in the hands of the FSM!

The Verizon version is unlocked out of the box even when attached to your account.

In addition to supply constraints, Kuo said the reason why iPhone X pre-orders won't begin for another six weeks is likely because Apple doesn't want to cannibalize sales of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.
This is internally inconsistent. Apple sets release dates based on achieving enough inventory for the stated regional releases. If the iPhone X hadn't had development delays they would be shipping this week. But they did. So now they will ship when there are "several million" in inventory. Simple as that.

Apple adjusted by making fewer regions in the initial release truanch.

I am wondering if the X series will be a two year cycle update while the regular series (8,9 etc) will be yearly.
Hummm...could be. I was wondering about naming too. We have the 8 and the 10 this year. Next year will we have the 8s or the 9? Will there be a 10s or 11? If we have a 9 ( or in 2 years if we have an 8s next year), what will the next one in that cycle be? It can't be a 10 obviously since the 10 is this year's premium one. Will they stop with the touch ID / top and bottom bezel versions after 1 or 2 more cycles and all iPhones will then be of the new form factor? Hummmm.....

I've highlighted the operative phrase from my post to make it easier for you to understand ...

When I picture Ming-Chi Kuo, I picture a guy who sits at home in shorts and a t-shirt with a computer and a phone collecting bits of information from various sources, adding some of his own thoughts, and then feeding it to all these Apple sites. Seems like a pretty easy job and he's probably making a really good living. Lucky bastard! ;)

I picture him with a really sweet beard and mustache combo.

There you go! =)

So if one has to wait until March-April to get the $1149 iPhone X, it will be yesterdays news in 6 months when the new one comes out?? If my pre order doesn't have shipping in 2017 it will be canceled.

If you work for Apple - not retail store - but at the campus, I assume there is some reserve for you especially in engineering and development.

I don't know about iStockNow...I just checked and they report that the iPhone X is now available, lol.

perhaps the filters were wrong? I got nuthin... :)

Which seems like the bigger issue when it comes to the divisive attitude toward the X.

Is it the notch or FaceID?

For me its the amount of trade offs for what amounts to a slightly bigger screen real estate than the 4.7 inch phones (in reality despite the 5.8 inch screen hype it will be less than the plus models as they are wider).

If we had the screen size of the plus in a form factor similar to the smaller phones I could get on board with the janky notch, lack of touchID and £1000 price point but we haven't really got that.

Note to anyone thinking of an iPhone X - Your content will appear smaller than it does on your iPhone 6+ or 7+. The iPhone X screen is dimensionally narrower in width when holding it upright while it is longer due to the removal of bezels. This allows Apple to advertise the screen as 5.8" diagonal, but content size will be restricted by the width of the display. It's also not a true 5.8", since video playback size will need to be reduced in order to avoid cropping or having the dreaded "notch" interfere with your playback.

Overall I'd say the iPhone X is sexy, but in some ways it's a step backward. I would be standing in line if the iPhone X had the same screen width as the iPhone 7+, plus the added vertical screen real estate, but sadly that is not what we got. We basically got something slightly larger than a non-plus iPhone with a taller screen that is not fully usable.

iPhone X is the evolution of the iPhone 7. Compared to that device the X is wider and items will display larger. The evolution of the iPhone 7 Plus has not come out yet. It likely will next year in a 6.2" screen size that is practically identical to the current Samsung Galaxy S8+. Apple is playing with people's heads in encouraging comparisons to the plus model. Simply put, the price increase would seem even larger if they had released a plus model this year too. It would have had a base price of at least $1,130 compared to the iPhone 7 Plus of $769 and would make people see the X is commanding a $350 premium over the equivalent 7.
